- More on Glen's guitars at: www.glencampbel... Glen Campbell performs a beautiful song he co-wrote, "Turn Around, Look At Me", at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Thanks for watching Glen Campbell Forums On RUclips.
The story that Glen often told is that he wrote the song with Jerry Capehart, but Jerry didn't give him credit (or music royalties) for it. In one interview Glen went into more detail and told that he wrote the melodically ascending part which features twice in the song. The first time it starts with the line "there is someone who really needs you" the second time it starts with "oh I've waited but I'll wait forever" etc. Glen has been telling this story quite consistently over the years and Jerry Capehart has been known to claim songwriting credits that belong to other artists. It's impossible to say for sure, but my bet is that Glen was telling the truth. - M.H.
Very Interesting. I never knew that Glen had a hand in writing this song. This story sounds like Lennon/McCartney. The Credit went to Lennon/McCartney for all the songs they wrote, even if the credit was solo to one or the other. Paul explained this that their agreement was that during their collaboration, they would share credit on all compositions, such as Yesterday written by Paul, the credit is Lennon/McCartney. This is a digression from this particular story, but seemed similar, except in this case it sounds like this was not an agreement over the credit.
I don’t think Glen would lie.
Glen Campbell ended up having such phenomenal success, he wouldn't have to lie about being cowriter on a song written six years before he hit it big. No reason to.
Who has ever heard of Jerry Capeheart, if he wrote this song. He would have did other songs. I believe Glen over that untalented thug, Glen just let it go, went on to write many more songs, performed all over the world!! The bigger talent wins!!
Thank you sir, I always thought The Glen wrote this song or at least co-wrote. So yes,.. thank you proof.. Of course Glen wrote... the man was not only a multi talented artist, phenominal musician, and A devout Christian but also I believe a literary genius too. I have LOVED HIM ALL MY LIFE xx
This man had so much talent. He is also a master guitarist, no comparison
Glen had far more talent than most all the so called big names he worked with or had on his great tv show The more you learn about him just blows your mind The absolute WHOLE package
@@emoney8098 Yes he was and very humble with it too which makes him a very special person indeed in my eyes
Yes it’s said Elvis Presley wanted Glenn as guitar player in his band for the Vegas residencies but Glenn wanted to pursue his own career Elvis settled for one James Burton who was no slouch either!!
He was the total package....writer, vocalist, amazing guitarist and entertainer.
Love this performance no one sings it like glen Campbell an amazing vocalist and guitarist One of the all time greats Thanks for sharing the music
Brilliant rest in peace Glen you left us a Legacy of Music. You will never be forgotten
Beautiful Glen Campbell, you are sadly missed. I will look for you and Elvis in heaven.
The Great Glen Campbell was a joy and a pleasure to watch all through the 70's , a master guitarist who entertained for years
I cut my teeth singing Glen's songs back in the 60's, took guitar lessons in '69 when I was 13. Gentle On My Mind was the first song I learned to play, then Galveston, and what a fantastic time it was learning to play the hits as he recorded and released them. Forever memories of a magical time. And I'm still singin' and playin' them fifty years later. And to do them justice, I play them on an Ovation. The songs are timeless, just like Glen.
Alouette de Mer That's such an awesome story! Thank you for sharing it.
What a wonderful song this is. And I am so glad he performed it in my home of London, England in 1977. He must have brought his audience to tears with it. God Bless you Glen. Evie Miller. England
written so young & turn aroud & look at me; as I'll be beside you forever!!
RIP dear Glen. Thank you, sir, for the incredible music you left us. We'll never forget you.......
Some singer. Some musician. I could listen to Glen day after day. God rest him.
He was so great and no one else could sound like him.
So true ....
Glen is pure class
I've made several comments on this...but must just add, this was always a Favourite song of mine. I have the record by The Vogues, familiar with The Bachelors and, The Lettermen versions... However, Glen's performance on this is Absolutely Brilliant...it IS the BEST (IMHO), And, upon learning,.. hearing from his own mouth he co-wrote this, and I appreciate the gentleman that have backed that up. His portrayal of this song is so personal..It's Beautifully delivered with such emotion. Magnificent !!! Happy Heavenly 84th Birthday Glen. Love you❤
Well written Karen
I did not know he wrote this,,,God Bless Glen
He didn't write it. He was just kidding. He said he was 5 years old. Jerry Capehart wrote it.
Actually, Glen Campbell did write this song!
Actually Jerry Capehart wrote the song. Glen was the first to record it, but he did not write it.
Check out Glen's autobiography for the backstory! He indeed wrote it!

God Bless Glen. God-speed mighty troubadour. Rest gently in the hands of the Lord! A very very talented and underappreciated musician. His children are shinning examples, the apple didn't fall far from the tree!
One of the class acts, sadly missing to day.
Glen Campbell Forums, thank you so very much for posting this live performance of this song.... it is one of my top 5 favorites of Glen's songs.... this song touched my heart the first time I heard it, and it still does... I thank you...

I woke up this morning with this song running through my head. I had been having a dream of my late husband and heard it in the dream. It is a song that my husband use to sing to me in the very early days of our being together. Thank you Glen Campbell for this song and so many others that have great meaning not only to me but to many others as well.
Wonderful words .....

So love this! Nobody could sing like Glen!! And have always loved this song, way before I knew he wrote it!!
Brilliant love the man
Love love love love this song
Beautiful song. Just watched Glen Campbell 'I'll be me' documentary, heartbreaking but also uplifting. So missed.
Final Destination 3 film made this song into a horror song.
Everytime I hear this song I think of death lurking behind someone.
😂
As far as music, raw talent and versatility Glen could do most anything to a level that others only hoped to achieve in one avenue of music if even that!
Totally
I had no idea Glen had recorded/co-written this song in 1961 until I read it in his obit today. Remember the Vogues' hit version later in the 60's, but this came as a bit of a surprise. Glen had a marvelous and clear tenor right up to the end. His "Ghost On The Canvas" album from 2011 is superb and a fitting tribute to his career and talent.
Hi Jon
I am like u. Only heard Vogued verdion thinking it is their song.
What a surprise!
Respect gor Mr Glen.
U describe my feelings.
Feel emotional libing in south.

His single of this came out in the summer of '61. It reached #62 in the top 100. It was "Our Song" for me and my girl at the time. Later, The Vogues had a big hit with it.
Did u marry her !
Lovely song
Best wishes
Robert Plant tweeted out a link to this video which is why I'm here. Great song!
RIP a great singer and person - you will be missed
What an awesome man and singer he was.
There's something about Glen's voice that soothes the soul. 🥰
He was a marvelous performer.wot a voice ,
One of my favorite Glen Campbell songs! Jimmy Webb has said that this was the song written and recorded by Glen Campbell in 1961 that inspired Jimmy Webb (at age 14) to pray to God to "one day allow me to write a song half as good as ‘Turn Around Look At Me’. And Lord if it’s not too much trouble could you get someone like Glen Campbell to record it?” :) (From: cashboxcanada dot ca, 2/9/2015)
Watched the programme "the Joy of the single (45's) and it featured this single and the mention of Jimmy Webb playing it until it was completely worn out ! As mentioned below he prayed and had his wish answered by working with this fantastic singer, so sad that Glen is now so poorly, God Bless him and thank him for the music. x
+John Craxton Thank you for your blessing, John.
"The Joy of the single" is a wonderful BBC documentary, and we were also glad to see both Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb's story included in that programme. Jimmy's prayer was answered many times over!
On this day in 1961 {December 15th} Glen Campbell performed "Turn Around, Look At Me"* on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time the song was at #76 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, it first entered the chart on October 30th for a one week stay at #97, re-entered the chart on November 20 for another week at #98, and then for a third time re-entered the chart on December 4th at #93...
And on December 25th, 1961 it peaked at #62 {for 1 week} and spent a total of ten weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #15 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks charts...
Between 1961 and 2014 he had thirty-seven records on the Top 100 chart, five made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, "Rhinestone Cowboy" for 2 weeks in 1975 and "Southern Nights" for 1 week in 1977...
Five of his thirty-seven charted records on the Top 100 were duets, three with Bobbie Gentry, and one each with Anne Murray and Rita Coolidge...
Glen Travis Campbell passed away at the age of 81 earlier this year on August 8th {2017}...
May he R.I.P.
* Seven years later on August 11th, 1968 the Vogues' covered version of the song peaked at #7 {for 2 weeks} on the Top 100 chart and it would reached #3 on the Adult Contemporary Tracks chart...
What a gorgeous young Glen... he just mad every thing he sang his own.. Perfect.. again. xx
This guy was way under rated he was fantastic AT writing singing and especially playing.
I never knew he wrote this! I love the Vogues version.
finally in good movie quality; thank you for posting
There is someone walking behind you
Turn around, look at me
There is someone watching your footsteps
Turn around, look at me
There is someone who really needs you
Here's my heart in my hand
Turn around
(Turn around)
Look at me
(Look at me)
Understand, understand
That there's someone who'll stand beside you
Turn around, look at me
And there's someone to love and guide you
Turn around, look at me
Oh, I've waited, but I'll wait forever
For you to come to me
Look at someone
(Look at someone)
Who really loves you
(Yeah, really loves you)
Turn around, look at me
Thank u for lyrics dear.
Best wishes

What a great song... I was 9 and my parents were going thru a nasty Divorce… o felt like o was losing my dad, because of course I was going with my mom after the divorce was final...I will put on glen Campbells greatest hits and cry and listen to it for hours

Loverly song loverly singer
Loved this man.
What a voice ❤
RIP Glen campbell
I always associate this song with Glen, but it's good to hear the backstory of the pre-chorus. What he does vocally with it is so masterful.
The vogues sings it great!
But Glen is the creator
As much as I love Glen Campbell's music and admire his exceptional talent I have to say the version by "The Vogues" is the gold standard of this song!!
❤❤❤
Rockin the Elvis suit

A 14 year old's song to her first love. Jim.
He's so terribly thin at this point, I'm guessing this was when he was drugging and boozing. It's amazing that he never lost his singing voice or his guitar skills as a result of that hard living. But the man was so incredibly gifted, you'd never even know he abused his body. Here's your proof. I could listen to this 5 times a day. And, in spite of being so thin, he's still gorgeous.
I'm so thankful he turned back to the Lord.
He is only 21 there. Doesn’t look thin.
Final destination
little bit look like cliff ,i love both
Hmmm--I just saw an old interview with Larry King and I too believe Glen's telling of it. He didn't ever seem to lie, even when telling the truth made him look bad. So much talent. I miss him!
I am NOT a country music fan. Having said that Glen Campbell surpassed that genre in his first recording of this song. Wichita Lineman is another. RIP Mr. Campbell.
I know the vogues' had a hit with this song but, there is someone who likes this version better...turn around ...look at me.
couldnt agree more Adrian.......
I had no idea he wrote this.
