Back in the day most baggers would mindlessly try to drive tracks backwards and just go for regular respawn strats when approaching ramps. The only prominent/commonly-used strats were the ones on rBC and BC3. Hawk was one of the first people to invest a lot of effort into finding ways to outdrive the other bagger and he ended up discovering the BCWii backwards strat (Hawk strat), which led to him being the first player to be considered the undisputed best bagger during his time. His dedication to improve as a bagger and his dominance in the D1 scene play a big role to the levels of strat development we got today. - The Coconut Mall backwards strat was originated by Black in 2012 in a video named ''[MKW Glitch Counts] #1''. In late 2015, I initiated the idea of implementing Black's method as a viable bagging strat, however the checkpoints seemed sketchy leading to the strat being banned from competitive play (watch?v=QvetBoNyBPo). In 2021, Roast and I theory-crafted how to bypass the checkpoint system in a way where the bagger making the strat would show in 10th while the other bagger is 9th. I also found an alignment to consistently do the backwards jump into the mall without items. Roast was the first player to do this strat consistently because he was really good at the fast glitch entrance. After staff reviewed the consistency behind the strat (checkpoints not messing up if it's done the correct way), they decided to allow baggers to go for CM glitch to drive the track backwards. - Another thing worth to mention about the bagging meta shift is the fact that back in the day it would be common to have the weakest link of their team drive backwards. It was seen as a way to play with a friend who might not be good enough in terms of running. Especially before the Wiimmfi era, most baggers were players who weren't great at the game's mechanics. Nowadays driving backwards requires more mechanical ability, strat knowledge, driving speed, good communication and the ability to win mind-games against your opponent. This is also the reason why Sam is the undisputed best bagger to touch the game. Nobody gets close to his mechanical capability when it comes to driving backwards, to a point where he only seems to lose if he gets really poor RNG.
i got back into mkwii clan wars this year (at least watching lol) and wow watching sam, maq and all the other amazing baggers truly left me speechless, i can't wait for more strats to be discovered, even though it will be very difficult
