Terminator 2 - T-800 FX - An Interview with Stan Winston
FULL STORY: bit.ly/TerminatorT-800FxYT
For #Terminator 2: Judgment Day, in addition to the T-1000 puppets and effects, Stan Winston Studio created a series of appliance makeups for Arnold Schwarzenegger that would reveal the 800-series Terminator's deterioration through the course of the story, as well as animatronic Schwarzenegger puppets for gags that couldn't be performed by the actor or his stunt man, and full-sized, articulated endoskeletons for an opening future war sequence.

23 years later and this film still has arguably the best special effects in a movie, absolutely amazing!
Soon to be 30 years, still a true statement 😁
@@MarCuseus 😂
That animatronics Arnie is awesome! Spookily realistic!
VirtualMark, It was particularly spooky watching Arnold check out his #animatronic self. He must have been a bit freaked out, too. -Matt
Loved this movie growing up, I love it even more now because the effects were very subtle and still impresses me for an older film.
Yep agree on that one,
RIP Stan Winston!!
Thanks for all the monumental and memorable experiences in cinema. Godspeed.
Absolute master of his craft and the creator of the creatures and effects in all my favourite films. RIP Stan Winston you were the best in the business and your legacy of movie magic will never be forgotten
Man the Stan Winston artists are geniuses. Rick Baker too.
T2 is the gold standard of effects. Since the first time I saw the movie till now (And I've watched it easily 100 times) I've never seen one scene that made me think "Oh wow, that looks so fake" Instead "How the heck did they do this". Even more so today in 2013 with $300m budgets and supercomputers, it still looks amazing. Every scene looks real, every prop looks legit.
Stan Winston, pure Genius! Rest In Peace.
This is moviemaking. I truly hope this isn't a dying art form because of CGI.
I'm coming from the ILM channel watching some behind-the-scenes of their recent works and I must tell you that I feel them fake somehow, even if they're top notch CGI, so I feel your concern a lot.
you say that as if cgi isn't an art form, it still takes effort and programming skills. It's a new generation of film making that creates for far better movies.
Luis Semple
im a programmer and I must say there is very little art in programming but of course there is art in CGI, since there are true artist behind the conceps rendered in CGI - what I'm saying is that CGI per-se is cold because his digital nature while I feel more organic and alive the puppets shown here more than their digital counterparts.
Luis Semple
Although I totally agree with your point, in that CGI is an art form (I'd be silly not to seeing as I'm a VFX artist). To say that it makes for a far better movie is in my opinion wrong. I think most studios today think that by adding better effects and bigger explosions = better movie but this simply isn't true. Better characters and better stories = better movies.
I mean having better quality effects are always better, not having more. I wouldn't want to see worse effects for the sake of art form.
Because Stan Winston was legend.
1:52, Mr. Freeze
Well, yeah, Son Goku. - David
Thank you so much Stan, RIP.
Terminator 1 was a revelation,T2 went to a whole new level. Its was the best. But Terminator 1 set the blueprint for others to follow.
Even many many many years later, this movie still looks kick ass. This is what quality production is all about. This movie is EPIC.
Love the robotics and the artistry involved in older movies.
Something that is going away more and more I think o.o
This is true art, sweat and lots of effort!!!
I will never forget "The Terminator"!.
If you compare time periods, not a single (or just a few) movie that have been made, comes slose to the quality of this one. Terminator was/is truly a masterpiece!
In my honest opinion, Terminator 2 is the best in the series. I can watch it over and over again without growing tired of it. Looking forward to Terminator 5, just because Arnold will make a comeback there.
I agree. Even watching all the BTS footage and exactly how they pulled off that stunt, I still find it to be an amazing effect. - Maggie
I remember seeing this for the first time on a VHS I had to send away for as a young, impressionable teenager. Thanks for the memories!
I miss how they used to put so much effort in movies unlike these that everything is made out of cgi
Star Wars prequels *cough*
Do you think CGI's are simpler? Why won't you try it?
It is simpler for the people who know how to do it and its for sure so much cheaper
Sean Peterson clearly you have no idea how it really works, and the process behind it. Let alone judge the entire process. I'd suggest to take more knowledge before judging the efforts made behind the scenes, especially comparing 2 different things.
*****
That is when they try to be cheap - in the same way the practical special effects of some b-movies in the 80ies looked like crap, due to having to do it with small budget. Don't compare CGI from the SyFy channel movies (or Asylum flics) and then with AAA-grade practical effects. Budget isn't even close to the same.
The puppets in this movie are very well made, but they are still noticeable in every scene.
Exceot the motorbike chase scene with the truck,, obvious arnold and john double body actor, but you are right this movie was amazing, a real classic.
i still remember realizing that this era of cinema was over when i watched terminator 3, i was soo excited for that movie. T2 was a favorite of mine growing up but cinema hasn't been the same since then
I'm old enough :( to say that I was there, when this movie came out. And yes, it was those times when a revolutionary movie like this could blow your mind and then you kept thinking about that experience for weeks. Like Star Wars, for example. Now it's hard to be impressed with so many media around us (some games are more spectacular than movies). But there is some gems nowadays too. Gravity is truly impressive.
Stan Winston is a Legend, Thank you sir.
It's just uncanny how much those
Puppets resemble Arnold.
RIP Stan Winston who made science truly meet art.
That's what I call a masterpiece, not that blue-screen-directed shit with painted abs.
These artists are great.....they are from another world.A more advanced one.
5:12 - Imagine waking up one morning to find this puppet staring at you (with the left eye glowing red). Yikes.
No one can beat Stan Winston studios.
They never get it perfect but I love the result in this case because I understand the skill, commitment and amount of work that goes into it. Job well done!
These special effects are incredible thank you
SO MUCH EFFORT! Hat's off to you guys, that's another reason why this movie is my fav action flick.
I rarely get truly "fooled" by make-up or animatronics - I can easily spot the difference, when they cut between actors and animatronic - but it still looks 1000 times better than most cgi even today! Stan Winston and his crew were true artists, and a lot of their work stands out and is impressive even 20 years later! I would love to see more practical effects in the future.
Classic film. One of my all time favs... No doubt thanks in part to the powerful special effects...
This was so dope! Wish movies were still made like this. 😢
That’s all I was curious about all these years is how they got those effects for that ending and wow bam there it is!!! An actual animatronic stunt double absolutely genius
I'd like to think that it's films like Terminator that really celebrate creativity and ingenuity in the film industry. The problem solving and artistry are mind blowing in a way that digital effects can't touch. With digital, you can make anything, yet it's the trickery and ambition of physical SFX that will always win audiences hearts!
Stewart Tuckwood We agree! The artistry, creativity and problem solving that go into these effects are truly staggering. That's why we love and advocate for practical and always will. Even when CG is called for, having a practical base always improves the effect. -Maggie
I remember this movie when was a kid was like OMFG! Now bein a milestone in the fx genere, after I already saw it for like 999999999 times its still fun to watch at least 2 times a year for me!
I really want to watch it now
Nice words: " We can come close, but we cannot create Arnold" glad to hear a sensible comment coming from a renowned technician. More so he is renowned cause he has realized this important fact that life can Neither be created nor Recreated by Man, for he is a creation of the Most High.
the puppets are more lifelike than Arnold is
Impressive work on one of the legends in movie history!
Why the hell isn't any of this GOLD in Blu-Ray/DVD releases!?!
The movie was made in 1992 and there are still effects in this movie that look just as good as effects today. I'm talking practical effects.
The scene at Dyson's house were he pulls off his skin to reveal his arm... Awesome.
the special effects of this movie are really great, even better than today's movies. u immediately realize u used a computer to spot a movie, but in this one they manageg to do it so perfectly that the final effect is really awesome. sorry, my english is still poor, i speak spanish ;)
I think the scene that Arnold gets smacked in the face with the iron beam screams "puppet" even when I first watched the first movie. Saying that I am amazed how much of the stuff I thought it was CGI is actually puppets. This is true art :)
PinBallReviewer, You are not alone in feeling this way. That's why we're at the beginning of a Practical FX renaissance. Audiences are tired of filmmakers only using one tool in the toolkit. Have faith! -Matt
I never liked how animatronics could not qualify for anything but technical awards for the academy awards. It take just as much skill for the puppeteer to act our the movements of the puppet, so much skill to craft the machines.
I dunno, tutz, it's more perfect than any CGI sim I've ever seen. - David
Art at its best!
Terminator 2, still one of my favorite terminator movies out of the series!! it's too awesome >_
stunning for its time, and still impressive today.
This is just so awesome
I loved when movies did this. Made it so much scarier as a kid
this is art! And it looks so much better than doing it all by CGI
Amazing work!! When watching the movie we see the actors. It's easy to forget all the work behind the scenes, without which there won't be any movie.
"The beauty you see in the flower is offered to you by the unseen roots"
I love this movie
sugreev2001, I totally agree with you. Stan embraced CGI when it first came out, just another tool to make the creatures look better. But amazing practical effects are almost always more realistic, mind-blowing and yes, special :) -Maggie
I like how much you reply to your viewers .
Thanks, TheKhaoz12. We're a big monster making family around here. Speaking directly to our students and fans is what makes what we do worth it. -Matt
I am so glad, I discovered this channel !
And that brings up a good point. Jurassic Park is now over 20 years ago and it was one of the earlier films to use CGI to create something alive. However, it was the blending of physical effects with CGI that made JP so special. When the camera had the actors in frame with the physical puppets, it looked real. This is something CGI still struggles with. However, the puppets could not have done the stampede scene. The trick is blending the two. That is when the FX reach their zenith.
It must've been a blast seeing this movie on release in 1991, the effects were ahead of its time. Nowadays, we've seen it all, it's all CGI. There's hardly anything that impresses me
HASTA LA VISTA BABY!!!!
The thing that actually impresses me the most is that AS was already at age 44 back then. ANd look at him looking so young!
And still aging gracefully, Marauder1981. - David
Pure Class Art.
some of those puppets r so realistic its freaky
Fascinating stuff. I still love "Cleave Man". Even knowing how it was done, it still looks amazing to this day.
Brilliant artists worked on this project
Really really awesome
Thanks for sharing, Roman Katz. MUCH more #Terminator stuff can be found on our website: www.stanwinstonschool.com. Check it out. -Matt
Imagine having one of those puppet animatronics for yourself!
amazing !! RIP STAN
ESTOY FELIZ DE PODER VER ESTO, GRACIAS!
Great great great. Thanks for sharing this video.
it is amazing
Hey Triste, we definitely agree with you! -Maggie
You could still tell, but it was probably the turning point where practical effects started to become unnoticeable. I wish more movies used practical effects.
Old special effects were so much better than CGI.
es magia pura!!!
Terminator 2 is the #1 action movie of all time! #Handsdown
BEST MOVIE EVER
I fucking love that movie.
my favorite movie of all time. watched it like hundred times i think :D
an the dc universe had trouble getting rid of a mustache with cg these guys were recreating people with practical effects... stunning!...
I like this so much. Thank you.
Great video as usual, Tnx!
Excellent job!!!!!!
still looks better than many new movies!
Awesome!!
Its amazing how movies influence us so much when we are young, I remember really likeing this movie too
Hats off to these guys i mean look at this masterpiece I would of took agess like 7 months?
T2 was my favourite movie for more than 10 years, since avatar took the pole.
very good.
now this is true movie magic!
that was epic
Sorprendido por toda mi vida despues de ver el increible trabajo
I hope industry will use animatronic more, its best method to create lifelike effect
Awsome!!
thanks for share
