    Terminator 2 - T-800 FX - An Interview with Stan Winston
    FULL STORY: bit.ly/TerminatorT-800FxYT
    For #Terminator 2: Judgment Day, in addition to the T-1000 puppets and effects, Stan Winston Studio created a series of appliance makeups for Arnold Schwarzenegger that would reveal the 800-series Terminator's deterioration through the course of the story, as well as animatronic Schwarzenegger puppets for gags that couldn't be performed by the actor or his stunt man, and full-sized, articulated endoskeletons for an opening future war sequence.

    T2 is the gold standard of effects. Since the first time I saw the movie till now (And I've watched it easily 100 times) I've never seen one scene that made me think "Oh wow, that looks so fake" Instead "How the heck did they do this". Even more so today in 2013 with $300m budgets and supercomputers, it still looks amazing. Every scene looks real, every prop looks legit.

    • @soogoonu
      @soogoonu 10 лет назад +4

      I'm coming from the ILM channel watching some behind-the-scenes of their recent works and I must tell you that I feel them fake somehow, even if they're top notch CGI, so I feel your concern a lot.

    • @MrDrumAndBassGranny
      @MrDrumAndBassGranny 10 лет назад +2

      you say that as if cgi isn't an art form, it still takes effort and programming skills. It's a new generation of film making that creates for far better movies.

    • @soogoonu
      @soogoonu 10 лет назад +8

      Luis Semple
      im a programmer and I must say there is very little art in programming but of course there is art in CGI, since there are true artist behind the conceps rendered in CGI - what I'm saying is that CGI per-se is cold because his digital nature while I feel more organic and alive the puppets shown here more than their digital counterparts.

    • @Bubblegummonsters
      @Bubblegummonsters 10 лет назад +8

      Luis Semple
      Although I totally agree with your point, in that CGI is an art form (I'd be silly not to seeing as I'm a VFX artist). To say that it makes for a far better movie is in my opinion wrong. I think most studios today think that by adding better effects and bigger explosions = better movie but this simply isn't true. Better characters and better stories = better movies.

    • @MrDrumAndBassGranny
      @MrDrumAndBassGranny 10 лет назад +1

      I mean having better quality effects are always better, not having more. I wouldn't want to see worse effects for the sake of art form.

      Sean Peterson clearly you have no idea how it really works, and the process behind it. Let alone judge the entire process. I'd suggest to take more knowledge before judging the efforts made behind the scenes, especially comparing 2 different things.

    • @ZarkowsWorld
      @ZarkowsWorld 10 лет назад +1

      *****
      That is when they try to be cheap - in the same way the practical special effects of some b-movies in the 80ies looked like crap, due to having to do it with small budget. Don't compare CGI from the SyFy channel movies (or Asylum flics) and then with AAA-grade practical effects. Budget isn't even close to the same.

    I'm old enough :( to say that I was there, when this movie came out. And yes, it was those times when a revolutionary movie like this could blow your mind and then you kept thinking about that experience for weeks. Like Star Wars, for example. Now it's hard to be impressed with so many media around us (some games are more spectacular than movies). But there is some gems nowadays too. Gravity is truly impressive.

    I rarely get truly "fooled" by make-up or animatronics - I can easily spot the difference, when they cut between actors and animatronic - but it still looks 1000 times better than most cgi even today! I'd like to think that it's films like Terminator that really celebrate creativity and ingenuity in the film industry. The problem solving and artistry are mind blowing in a way that digital effects can't touch. With digital, you can make anything, yet it's the trickery and ambition of physical SFX that will always win audiences hearts!

    • @StanWinstonSchool
      @StanWinstonSchool  10 лет назад

      Stewart Tuckwood We agree! The artistry, creativity and problem solving that go into these effects are truly staggering. That's why we love and advocate for practical and always will. Even when CG is called for, having a practical base always improves the effect. -Maggie

    And that brings up a good point. Jurassic Park is now over 20 years ago and it was one of the earlier films to use CGI to create something alive. However, it was the blending of physical effects with CGI that made JP so special. When the camera had the actors in frame with the physical puppets, it looked real. This is something CGI still struggles with. However, the puppets could not have done the stampede scene. The trick is blending the two. That is when the FX reach their zenith.
