  • In this video, I try to analyse the situation with Romania in Eurovision recently, firstly by reviewing the interview that Theodor did with The Watcher, which gives us insight into the behind the scenes sitiuation with TVR and the Romania delegation. Then in the second half, I discuss Romania's place in the contest with the help of some comments from Romanians subscribers of the channel.

    I feel so terrible for Theodor. Knowing what a dream this was for him and how badly he wanted to go to Eurovision just breaks my heart seeing what TVR did to him. I wonder if he will even look back on his Eurovision journey with much fondness.

    My heart goes out to Theodor, he has a fantastic singing voice and I enjoyed his song. I'm surprised that the EBU doesn't stipulate that the artist must be involved in staging and artistic meetings and decisions 😢 It is sad that some of the decision makers of the Romanian delegation are happy to use is talent yet provide him with little support. Hats off to him for giving a great performance despite being blocked at every turn. I hope we continue to hear more music from him in the future 💖

    Watching the Romanian NF live, it was PAINFULLY apparent that TVR is incompetent. There were so many awkward moments, stalling, bad jokes, technical errors, etc. It was such a trainwreck, it doesn't surprise me that they're basically sabotaging their artists in the main event. I think Theodor was fairly reserved in his interview because he isn't supposed to badmouth the delegation or something and that makes me wonder what else may have happened behind the scenes. He has such a great voice and just needed some guidance on the staging, not to have it completely taken away in favor of whatever that was.

    Actually, for Roxen's case, the delegations made the staging and Roxen didn't agree cause she knew she couldn't sing well while running or dancing and they shut her up and continue with that staging so again.. another TVR terrible decision who's surprise ?!
    btw so surprise how Theodor had incredible ideas for such a young age and for the beginning of his carreer.. so sad and furious how TVR and the delegations are treating their artists to the point they are taking their creativity, their own songs and are threatening them..

      Yea if theres one thing I take away from this interview, it's that this delegation is incompetent and were clearly to blame for Roxen's NQ. If she had been given suitable staging, she would have qualified. It's a shame that she wasnt able to speak out against them afterward

      It saddens me when I think of the potential that girl had going into the contest. Both songs she had were excellent, at least the studio cuts were. I've always been a fan of Romanian entries going right back to Mălina Olinescu's "Eu cred" (1998) RIP. Monica Anghel and Marcel Pavel's "Tell Me Why" (2002), Luminița Anghel and Sistem "Let Me Try" (2005), Nico and Vlad's "Pe-o margine de lume" (2008) and Paula Seling and Ovi's "Playing with Fire" (2010) are some of my most favourite duets from Eurovision. I thought WRS last year was a great entry. Ester Peony & The Humans were respectable entries IMHO. So this year was a real quality-drop shock. I REALLY hope they reinvent themselves for 2024 and comeback stronger than ever. Note to Tom- INNA is the most amazing artist - check out her song Oh My God!

  • @Shellydaliie
    @Shellydaliie Год назад +53

    For the first part of the video, I think its pretty shocking that a delegation would nearly deliberately sabotage their own act and not allow them to have any creative input into their entry (I feel like someone should step in at that stage and fight for the artist's wants)
    Secondly for the WRS bit, I have heard speculation that he did a lot of that on his own, I've heard he styled himself and his dancers, covered expenses and did the choreo either himself or a friend helped him so it does seem like he might've pushed tvr out of the picture because theyre suggesting really rubbish ideas.

    • @firionnel7833
      @firionnel7833 Год назад +9

      "TVR are suggesting rubbish ideas" given what happened to Theodor this year and what Roxen's staging looked like in 2021, "rubbish" seems like an understatement.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Год назад +8

      Yeah and the situation with WRS pretty much confirms that that was the case. Because WRS had a very pro LGBT show, but then this year the delegation are wringing their hands over a pink suit

    • @floraflowers
      @floraflowers Год назад +1

      It might be rooted into the typical Romanian mentality, the concept that if you're older, you're automatically wiser and if you've spent a certain time in a field, you have more knowledge than a newcomer. I'm very certain the people at TVR looked at Theodor, scoffed and went "what would an 18-year-old know anyway?". It's very archaic but a lot of people in the older generation, especially the generation before the fall of communism, are like this. As a Romanian, I've seen and experienced it firsthand.

    Thanks for the tip to watch Theodor's self-made video. Since the song is largely not in English, it *really* needs the right visuals to help you understand the meaning of the song. I was one of the folks who made fun of him (I must admit I didn't really understand the song until I saw the self-made video) and now I feel badly about it. Sounds like TVR and/or the delegation were the ones holding the voodoo doll.

    As a romanian (who’s been living abroad for a big chunk of my life so i’m probably not the best source) it‘s definitely difficult to gauge the situation. I wouldn‘t agree that people „don‘t care“ or „don’t know“ about ESC, moreso that instead of taking some accountability, they prefer to deflect and make up excuses, wether it be „its all political and they hate us“ or „rock songs dont do well generally“ that stop progress from happening. You‘d assume that if TVR is holding on for dear life onto their broadcasting license, they‘d at least invest into and hype up ESC and the national selection but it just looks like an elementary school show that the first graders hold for christmas in front of their parents. And then to let those people, who couldnt even take care of the national selection, to then make decisions about the STAGING???? out.

    I am a romanian and i want to say my opinion on this. I feel like back in their glory days, Romania was very open to exploring more western style songs and expressing LGTBQ culture in Romania (2013 and 2021). Romanians in general are not the most LGBTQ friendly people and a lot that I know are very homophobic and some are even racist. These ignorant ideas usually are coming from older people in their 50s or 60s. If TVR would involve a different more younger team that would be more open to individuality (and are more liberal than conservative in general) i think they would do better. For ProTV being the broadcaster would be a MASSIVE idea. They need to come up with a plan to get them on the Eurovision planning team. All of the big artists in Romania always perform there for specials, events, and on the big competition shows (the masked singer, the voice, romania's got talent). In fact, INNA (the biggest artist from romania ever) was a JUDGE on The Masked Singer Romania in the 1st series. Some past contestants from the masked signer romania include Karmen (check out her song Belladona she did with Bruja) and Alina Eremia (she represented Romania in JESC in 2006, she has GREAT songs like Dependeta Mea, and Enchante). Therefore, u can see ProTV has AN EASY ACCESS to the top talent in romania. I am 100% confident that if ProTV would be the broadcaster, they would not only be able to host a GREAT NF (and contest if they were to win), but also be able to consistently send songs that would appeal to international viewers, send artists like israel did this year with Noa Kirel, and might perform better overall than they ever have before. In the early days of Romanian participation they sent a big artist (Dan Bittman). If they were able to send big artists, they would succeed and even WIN. It breaks my heart that because of the poor decision making and stubborness from TVR that Romanians are losing interest in Eurovision. I recommend doing switching to ProTV, organizing a NF like Benidorm Fest 2022, select BIG artists in romania, have good staging, and they should be good to go.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Год назад +1

      Unfortunately a switch to ProTV is not possible because they are not part of the EBU, but yeah I agree that they would be way better suited to take care of the selection

  • @plutomarigold

    hi romanian here
    it sadly doesn't surprise me that TVR and the romanian delegation fucked this up. TVR doesn't have any competition style shows meanwhile PROTV and even Antena have more eperiance with those kinds of shows (PROTV hosting The Voice and Romanias got talent and Antena hosting The X factor) I belive at the moment they only show news and period dramas.
    I also belive that Romania's insecurity to show more experimental songs/ stageing comes from a fear of beein seen as less than by western Europe. The songs they send for the past years were boring and uninspired compared to what this country offer. Even comparing Theo's song with the Moldovan song this year (same language and Moldova is very similar to Romania with the folk music) it was boring and generic.
    I'm just hoping the send more folk or at least folk-influence songs because that is a big strength of our country and sending generic pop songs or songs that have no tie to romania at all (202) dose us a big disservice. Hoping they take a page out of Moldova's book

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Год назад +2

      Yeah the contrast between Romania and Moldova's results is really interesting and telling.
      Also great point about ProTV, you can really see the difference in TVR's production ability when you see how poorly done their national final was this year.
      It's a shame that Pro TV are private and aren't able to take the contract

    I truly hope Romania can get it together. They're up to it, if you see how well Selectia Nationala in 2020 worked. The viewing figures for the Eurovision final this year were so appalling; I would think TVR would be interested in getting a bigger part of the share but I guess they're not really bothered that channels like PRO outperform them (guess that may be a problem for more public broadcasters?). A team with some fresh ideas and actual interest in entertainment and raising both TVR's and Eurovision's profile in Romania would be great.

    I heard in 2021 that Roxen's last minute outfit change from rehearsals to the jury/live show was not her choice and the broadcaster picked the outfit for her, which didn't fit the theme or vibe of the song at all. So it doesn't surprise me to hear that they essentially prevented Theodor from doing anything, but its very disheartening to hear that he didn't want the acoustic version he just wanted his original version, I'm sure if he could go back in time he wouldn't have shown the acoustic version in the first place. It sucks too cos the original sounded way better IMO and hoped it would have shock qualified before the revamp. I also think Theodor might have been a victim of the fact that TVR wanted to withdraw, but then when that online poll overwhelming said to remain in Eurovision, they reluctantly participated but they didn't want to. It's a shame, hopefully they can fix their internal problems and get Romania back to the grand final.

    Well, that interview explains a lot!
    In hindsight the acoustic guitar start would fit the song, since it is a song about someone pulling the strings. With regards to imagery, the 'suggestions' and eventual output are bad by a large margin. I imagined at least one female dancer actually pulling strings (which would look like Finland's leashed dancers, but reversed) or mimicking a puppeteer. Then, when we get to the climax, he breaks free of his ties and runs around the stage or whatever. Instead none of images seemed to work or signal anything.
    It is amazing that both Roxen and Theodor went on with the show as they were told and didn't attempt to sabotage their performances by for example not running around, or facing the wrong way. Or replace one of his D.G.T.' s with T.V.R., that would fit the song. Might be a contractual thing.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Год назад

      I don't think sabotage is the way to go. People watching the TV wouldn't understand the context and would just think that they're incompetent performers. They need to think about their future career. Also professionally it doesn't look good

    The simple thing for me is the staging. If Theodor (OR Adelaida) for that matter had used their staging or simple lighting with pyro effects at the end like in the round BEFORE the NF but even then, what we got in the NF would have been MUCH BETTER than the Eurovision staging. That being said, the song for many is still weak enough not to qualify in such a brilliant year. TVR definitely seem responsible. One watch of their national final when it was live is clear TVR have declined SIGNIFICANTLY and their glory days are over: the stream kept going in and out and you look at how cheap the final stagings and how bored the crowd look and you can conclude that Romania either don't have the funds to continue OR they need a change of broadcaster. Theodor is only 18 and has the talent. What we need is to give this guy a second chance, maybe for another country like Moldova or San Marino? I think if TVR hadn't shot down so many ideas, Adelaida and Andrei and the others would have been SO MUCH better and one of the other two COULD have gone instead! Went back to 2019 and I'm surprised so many hate it. I was actually impressed given this year's staging!

    Romanian delegation needs an overhaul and then the new team needs to go back to the drawing board for ideas on how they can succeed, even on a low budget. I think it's getting fairly obvious NRK/Norway is having issues funding all the things that they want (and that fans want) lately, but they always manage to put together something that's decent despite that. Romania can do it IF they want to! We have seen them send some amazing entries in the past, and I hope they can find the path forward to success.

    Honestly, I think TVR has been going downhill since their disqulification in 2016. The DQ did give them a year to recoup and qualify in 2017. However, since 2018, it looked like they lost everything that made Romania successful in the '00s and '10s.
    2018 was the year where I thought something was off. The Humans and their entry wasn't too bad, but it was a borderline qualifyer. Their staging was just baffelling and TVR never recovered. 2022 was the only exception b/c WRS is a very charasmatic performer, and his song was very catchy from the start. This year with their treatment lf Theodore was simply a travesty. I think he should give it another go with Eurovision but with Moldova. They'll most likely treat him much better there.

    Coming 7 months later, after TVR officials decided not to go to ESC this year. What you've pointed out was very on spot and basically Romania is in a big sh*t rn, in all domains but we will resume only on the Eurovision. *I think* that in 2018 TVR decided to do a refresh even though everything went well and they started with some of the staff: how else would we explain the "growth" of bad decisions if not by changing something in your formula? Second thing, TVR stated that this year Romania will not participate because of the lack of funds and they want to invest in other facilities and also broadcast the Olympics, another bad field for our country, but this is not TVR's fault (or at least not entirely)... Honestly, I am happy that we don't get to participate in the 2024 edition because most probably it would be another failure (nothing would probably change that fast) and the public money may be spent better if they actually do what they've stated (there are some ambitious projects). I would be even happier if real changes were made to actually do decent in the first phase and then be a force. For example, I would fire every single person from the 2023 delegation (ok maybe not every single one but a very very big part of them), and recruit professional guys by imposing some high standards because there is a workforce that would tick all the boxes and I would put some priority to bring people who did well in this competition: Mihai (Traistariu) is the first guy that would lead Romania to a good path in this competition because he actually knows what is going on there. And for a period I would cancel the Selecția Națională (a very "creative" name anyway) and opt for an Internal Selection, if you have the right people you can actually produce results. I would bring back Global Records even though this could be a bad move because you may block entirely other artists but let's look at the 2020 final, it looked like Eurovision came to life in our country. Right now this cult of Eurovision is dead in Romania and the announcement of not getting part this year did some damage too so the only hope is that TVR will address the problem when we get back on track, the 2023 edition should be the final wake up call.

    To be honest my opinion here is that most of these “Eastern-European countries like Romania, Poland, used to be Hungary as well (I’m also Eastern-European so don’t come after me for this pls) They have a lot of corruption and so much work around budget and so what most in other places like Ireland and Western countries are probably not experiencing that much, because they are way richer countries, so 1-2k euros disappearing is not looking that bad there because there budget is simply way bigger, meanwhile in these countries it is seen more. Also as we do with the Polish entry they choose someone who they wanted not who could be successful, but meanwhile Romanians are not that enthusiastic to pick up the phone I mean the diaspora they have smaller chance than Poland dose, also this part is not just a theory because even in the final we saw how much point Blanka got as Televote even tough it was closer to playback than actually live. Anyway I’m feeling sorry for Theodor too but we have to admit that even with a better staging and bigger budget with this song he would not have qualified but he could have been closer than this. I agree that TVR needs to get there shit together in this part, because Roxane was amazing I mean the song was great the decisions were not cool but still I liked the song, just as Alcohol you, which I am still listening to. Over all what I feel is that even tough we love to see more and more countries in ESC I think some of the countries needs to think about there participation, I love Bulgaria for example I’m sorry they are not in the competition right now but when they participate except last year they had great song since they returned 2016, 2017,2018,2020 my personal favorite and so but I think they are a great example that not always need to participate but when you do you do it right. I’m sorry that my country is not in the competition anymore because we have great musicians, but Hungary has similar problems as most of the Eastern-European countries what I’ve mentioned a bit different aspect but all has the same problem which is corruption, and government because at the end of the day most of these broadcasters are government controlled behind the scenes let’s face it.
