What they didn't show you - 1st semi-final Liverpool 2023

- The first semi final featured the top 3 scoring acts in the final, so watch here to see bits of their performances - from an audience perspective!
See the way they transition between acts with an army of helpers taking away and bring in the elaborate sets in just seconds, while they are showing the next intro video.
This is my little quick edit of our night, showing snippets of each act, most transitions, plus a puppet spoiler alert near the end - it's really a man! I've since found out that it's Dustin the Turkey who was a star on Irish TV in the early 2000's and has made several appearances at Eurovision, even being Ireland's entry to Eurovision in 2008! It didn't get past the semi-final.
I made a comment that I was surprised to see Portugal get through. My apologies for that - I should have said that it's not my cup of tea instead - thanks to MadeInRoChannel for picking me up on that!
This was filmed using an old HD camcorder so quality is not fantastic, though it has a good zoom range.

The extremely clever thing about having a screen on the stage floor is you can mark exactly where every set piece is supposed to go!
Yes you are right, I never noticed that. It's so important too as quite a few of the items on the floor had graphics swirling round them, so being off position would look bad
they used to use Lasers before LED floors to mark the spots, was really interesting to see :)
Wonder what they used before lasers? Probably different coloured blobs of paint.
@@timsharp colored electrical tape
@@sandrogattorno4962 tape is what is commonly used in the event world still. Not everyone has the budget of ESC and can just make the whole floor a big screen :D
The transition from Ireland to Croatia for that band equipment is smooth.
Yes and such complicated sets!
Wow, impressive how fast they work there. Thanks for sharing! :)
Yes it was really impressive. We're used to seeing the occasional scene change at concerts but this was on another level
I like that you included the walk to and from the venue, kinda puts the night in a bigger context
Yes, my other videos are mainly about the journey - I like to see how places unfold and not miss anything. Thanks for commenting
And my companion video to this is all about the Eurovision village and the walk to the venue from there - in hyperlapse (plus a bit more of the show and sound snippets of each live act)
I love the transitions and hearing the crowed
Thanks. The transitions were unreal
I was at the Grand Final show. Watching the ground crew set up well over 30 acts and interval song stage sets in 40-second intervals was quite something!
Yes the final must have been even more amazing. We made the decision to try for semi-final tickets as we thought the final would sell out straight away and we might be left with nothing. Well done for getting Grand Final tickets.
the thing i find very clever is that on the floor screen between transitions it's shown where the objects in the scenery should be
pretty cool stuff
Isn't it strange, I didn't notice this either when we were watching the show or when I was editing the video, but it's so clear, how could I miss it! Yes very clever
What a show! Fantastic video, Tim!
Thanks Fuzzy. Yes it was an amazing show - so well organised
@@timsharp Nice, i always wondered what goes one between songs. Do you also have footage from the second semifinals ?
Unfortunately we only got tickets for the first - but people have been saying it was the better of the two.
@@timsharp Awh too bad my. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely brilliant - thanks Tim!
You're very welcome Neil, thanks for commenting. And I just got monetized today! I just watched your 10,000 subscribers video (well some of it, I have to get my beauty sleep now, will watch more tomorrow). I earned £1.45 on my first day!
Looks amazing, thanks for sharing!
It was, thanks for watching
Great video!!
Thanks
thanks for sharing!! my favorite is Switzerland - bit anxious about his final results
Hopefully he'll do well. I like the clear anti-war sentiments and his great voice
I was here too, standing quite near the stage. I sometimes saw myself jumping around in this video 🎉
That's great, you were having fun then!
Oh wow! 😲 Thank you. 👍
And thank you!
Thanks for sharing this! Super interesting to see. I hope to be there someday :D
Thanks for the comment. It was absolutely brilliant being there, just a pity I couldn't take in a better camera!
Great, thanks for sharing ;-)
Thanks for commenting
Impressive stage changes and very amusing show by BBC
.thanx God somebody uncovered Dustin the Turkey after all these years..😆🦸🙏 greetings.feom Belgrade Serbia 2008
I'd never heard of Dustin the Turkey before tonight - I must have missed that in previous Eurovisions - I think I have puppet blindness!
@@timsharp Ireland 2008,Belgrade..."Ireland,douze points..!"
Yay, Serbia and Czechia are my favorites too :D
Czechia did quite well in the final. Unfortunately and surprisingly perhaps, Serbia didn't do so well
Dziękuję! ;-)
You're welcome
Portugal 🇵🇹 was amazing
Yes, everyone was amazing and the sound in the venue was really good as well
What a great & wonderful show, and lovely to see "behind the scenes"! The folks who hate it (just read loads of hateful comments by Brits, "would never watch it" etc.) really don't know what they're missing!!! (Btw, Finland is also a favourite to win, and I personally was surprised by Switzerland getting through, and Portugal a little bit, the rest were not surprising at all ;))
Agree, I have friends who don't watch Eurovision because they say it's crap - but they never watch it so they don't really know! I think that attitude has changed in the last few years, there are fewer Eurovision deniers out there! I have a feeling Switzerland will do well.
Yep the haters think Eurovision is still stuck in the Noughties but if they had watched it in the past decade they would know differently! My colleagues always say they won’t watch it but every year they do XD
🇫🇮 Finland ❤
Well it did come 2nd!
welcome to my city hope ya had fun ❤️
Yes we did. Despite being from Yorkshire, Liverpool is one of our favourite cities in the World!
@@timsharp thank you mate 😁
That interval act with Alyosha was STUNNING... actual shivers confirmed - wow! 🥺
I'll have to look back at my original footage, I only put very small bits on this video
and then they bring in rita ora 😖
I love to see the scene changes as well as secrets from the green room😊
Thanks, I thought it was so interesting as well.
I love the little comments about the ratings in-between songs hehe
Thanks, you mean my comments in the video or the comments here?
@@timsharp oh the comments in the video, like ”i give it a 5/10”
I will try harder next time!
@@timsharp No No, I don’t mind them!
The video was really good, you don’t have to change anything :’)
Thanks, I always wonder if my comments might be taken the wrong way, so I've tried not to be controversial in this one so I don't offend people - nowadays people's views seem so polarised - you are either right or wrong, not much space for in betweeners like me! My video has had 953 likes so far, but 25 dislikes - I must have done something to displease those 25 - wonder what it was?
Thank you i am from 🇮🇱
We were in the queue behind someone in a Unicorn costume!
@@timsharp that's cool
Yes, you see it clearly in my other video today - the Eurovision Village one, as we were in the queue to get in the venue
i have preformed in the same room the stage was in a few years ago and i have also been in the arena when they were building the stage
Intrigued - what did you perform?
@@timsharp it was like a massive choir
Bet that was really something!
VIVA PORTUGAL 💚💛❤. MIMICAT EXCELENTE !!!
viva
Glad to see Serbian is one of your faves! Mine too!
Can anyone say if there was a hose malfunction? When he pulled out the hoses, it looks like the 2nd one wasn't there - but in my video (the part I didn't publish) it looks like the cameraman might have put it back in as he passed - or perhaps Luke was just waiting for the camera to get into position? I might be completely wrong because I haven't seen the TV coverage of it yet
Luka❤🇷🇸🍀
?
i see some uh... interlacing artifacts, if you know what i mean, and i think it can be deinterlaced with VirtualDub
Yes you are right, it was all shot on a pretty old Sony HD camcorder (they only let non-professional camera equipment in) so it's relatively poor quality. I wanted to get it published while it was still relevant, so didn't have time to do much with it. I might try to enhance the footage and upload again - people do still seem to like it (in fact it's by far my most popular video to date!)
what phone did you use??
It was an old Sony camcorder with a 60x zoom, filming in standard HD
Me seeing that flower tthingy and sraight away kmowin that its serbias turn
I can't understand why it wasn't more popular
I was there. I know the place
Yes, amazing atmosphere wasn't it?
@@timsharp i was there in the museum. I loved the video
Honestly i gotta say, i would Not want to be at the actual live performance right there at the arena. Somehow all the magic gets lost, when you see behind the curtain and not the final polished product
Oh, but it was magic - the way everything went together, from seeming chaos in just a few seconds
Life is the journey, not the destination.
How can you say about Portugal "suprised this got through"?!? That's music... unlike Serbia.
Yes, I apologise. I should have said that's not my cup of tea.
he prefers Croatia nonsense
Israel's staging looks like Susie's staging from the uk , it's just turned lmao 😂
Yes it looks like SuRie's staging from 2018. I guess that's what you meant - annoying predictive text eh?
Looks interesting but I prefer watching on TV, just cleaner
Yes TV is much cleaner - my camcorder was hand held and only HD, so not the best quality. I was trying to convey some of the excitement of Eurovision with scene changes and an audience view. We were not allowed to take professional cameras into the auditorium.
Just for clarification Switserland wasn't a anti Russia Ukraine war song, it was written begore that war
Thanks for the clarification. It was very apt even so - I imagined young Russians listening to it and agreeing with the sentiments.
uk, czechia, germany, norway and moldova are my favs. Class
i hated israel, liked ireland, loreen is amazing but honestly the song is quite boring and croatia's was great
Amazing how people's tastes differ and how they overlap. I love Czechia, but also quite like Israel.
@4:02 Moldova 😢 No love
Not sure whether you mean you didn't love it or other people didn't, but I thought it was decent
wrong winner = sweden
Yes, I wanted Armenia to win! (that's not who you meant is it?)
I would like to keep respectfull, an i will.. But all this songs, singers, performers, and scenarios a mostly disgracefull towards human, humanity, and first of all to something we use to call music
so you're not respectful
Ok bro. Thats like your opinion man.
I can understand why some people would think so, but the whole thing is just so joyous, you should let it go.
🤡
I's not true, I think.
