    Bloo Synth is the most captivating thing to me, I swear...and you absolutely nailed it my dude. It almost feels wrong to say that some of the biggest earworms for me are stuff like the pre-show audio, the sample at 6:10, and the textures of the patches you play (like 7:12, and 7:35, which I think is an accordion...? and the Electric Counterpoint bit in the BoBP lot tune), since it feels to me like a disservice to all of the performers on the field if I say that...but I guess there's a talented team of audio engineers making sure those sounds give it that quality that's unmistakably Bluecoats. And a fantastic performer to pull it off as well! (I also stan your part under the keytar section, so dream-like and energetic all at once)

      Yeah making all of the patches fit in took a lot of time throughout the season to get it to feel perfect lmao. Thank you so much man!! I really appreciate it!!

      @@colersenKnowing about the setups is a plus, but I wouldn’t say that it’s a life or death type of thing. When I first auditioned, I didn’t know a whole lot about the setups. You’ve just gotta be willing and able to learn the stuff pretty quickly.

    Is it confusing to work with that keyboard? I play a more basic synthesizer with a cart and speaker and it has dozens of buttons and I don’t know what half of them do but the synthesizers I see in the cams always have so many buttons and computers. Do you have to like click the computer screen or something while you’re playing? And do you got to do like sound changes and adjustments while playing or do you like barely touch buttons that aren’t like sound buttons? What are the computers for? Our band has Malik carts, and they use iPads, but I don’t really see them touching them at all, and they only really touch the buttons on their stations. Is it like that for you or do you have to be programming computers while playing

    I've always wondered how the narration is played, like is it pre-timed or is each segment of the narration recorded separately and a front ensemble member 'plays' each segment in time?

    • @RealJoey
      @RealJoey  2 года назад +23

      The narration was spliced into separate samples. The other synth player, Riley, triggered those samples at specific times throughout the show so that it could line up with certain musical moments, such as the “Are you gonna say something to that guy” sample with the battery.

      @@RealJoey so are there other major differences by how the 1st and 2nd parts are written outside of the narraration?

    • @RealJoey
      @RealJoey  2 года назад +3

      @@dizdawgjr34 It's mostly just musical moments that fit in with the narration, such as in the beginning of the Nautilus movement with the first loud bass note that lines up with the "It got my blood boiling" line.

    This was really cool to watch! I'm planning on auditioning for synth at Blue coats (and possible another corps) this season. Do you have any tips that might help prepare me?

    • @RealJoey
      @RealJoey  2 года назад +3

      Sorry that this is late haha. Definitely get your hands on audition packets as soon as possible and start working on the exercises. Build up the tempos gradually and do what you are most comfortable with. Depending on the audition requirements, look for a solo that best shows your playing abilities. For reference, I'm using a piece by Sibelius for the upcoming camp. Overall, just bring a friendly and positive mindset for the audition camps! Let me know if you have any other specific questions!

    How do you like the Keylab MkII keybed?

    • @RealJoey
      @RealJoey  2 года назад +1

      It was really nice to play on!! The keys were heavier compared to what I was expecting, but it felt somewhat like an actual grand piano. My only complaint would be the pads on the left side of the keyboard... they got very finnicky as the season went on.

    How hard is it to get into synth for bloo?

    • @RealJoey
      @RealJoey  2 года назад

      It kinda depends. I’ve been playing piano for about 10 years now and it wasn’t that bad to read the exercises. The hardest part was fitting in with the rest of the ensemble during audition camps.

    • @SJdrumz
      @SJdrumz 2 года назад

      @@RealJoey how old were you when you started piano? I played for a few years when I was younger but I haven't played in years and when I graduate I want to play synth for a corp. Is the music difficult?

    • @RealJoey
      @RealJoey  2 года назад

      @@SJdrumz I started when I was either 10 or 11 years old. The music that I got wasn't too difficult to begin with, as it was a "placeholder" part that the electronics coordinator and I rewrote throughout the season. By the end of the season, the music was enough of a challenge without being too uncomfortable
