It's great to see all these people shocked about how great multitasking in the front ensemble is and how fast we can do things. Yeah sure we stand there but we still put in like equal work the band puts in i'd say we make up about half of the sound during the show. Like why do u think our forearms are thick it's not because we lift it's because we chop out and kill ourselves playing like fifty notes in one measure for like 30 measures and it's a whole other story for 4 mallets people honestly (in my experience) don't understand the focus, energy, work, time, endurance, speed, strength, emotion, technique, the listening skills, the urge not to look at the drum major, making sure everything is clean and sounds good, and patience to deal with people who think we don't do anything and are lazy The struggle is honestly really real in the pit. I think u had an amazing performance and really inspired me to have more emotion in my performance. I wish I could see u again at dci east but I guess it's ur last season thanks for the vid
T H I C C forearms. as a trumpet player trying to learn about marching and mallet percussion i have a ton of respect for you guys, i can barely understand 4 mallet, let alone memorizing 14 full minutes of some of the most complicated music i've seen!
Fr The pit is overrated but many people in the pit play multiple instruments at the same time have to switch sounds and mallets and sticks switch instruments during the middle of the show and carry around heavy equipment. We’re not as lazy as people think and we have a lot of solos.
There is nothing better than watching someone doing something they love. As far as music goes, you are the second I've had the pleasure of watching who just genuinely loves what they're doing, the first being my first section leader. You're inspiring, keep loving what you do. Have a great day
God synths sound so damn awesome. Like at Colts camps for ensemble, half the time I'm listening to the synth. It's just so "clean", especially all the lower tones.
Ok I was really on edge in considering if I should audition for synth for a drum corps. There’s a lot of stigma at my school around synth players being not as talented but you’ve really inspired me. I think people underestimate the amount of talent and the mental stamina it takes to do this. You’re awesome and thanks for the inspiration
sciencenerd1123 this comment makes me SOOOO happy!! I wish more people out there appreciated what synth playing is! Sure it's not marching but it's a completely different mental battle. ❤️
I was a bass player for two years and just got put on synth for the marching season this semester. I was so sad but after my first week at band camp it was so much more fun than I thought it was going to be. I’ve been looking for videos to see how people behind the synth move alongside the pit. This helped so much!
I am amazed, you are so skilled! What a performance..I'm in love... We still need a synth player in our front ensemble at Jubal Drum & Bugle Corps in The Netherlands, you are more then welcome!
I sat on the 50 front row for Prelims. It was a trip for me to watch how fast front ensembles could setup the main mixer and all of your electronics. Good job.
Last season I was one of 2 synths. When people ask my position and I tell them synthesizer they almost never know what I’m talking about😂 it’s nice to see this underrated instrument getting some love
That's amazing how you can multitask like that AND show so much emotion while playing... this is beautiful, you are beautiful, and that corps is beautiful, go Phantom! SUTA!!!!
This video just came across my channel feed 8 years after it was aired. At THAT moment we were looking at the sexiest woman alive. AND one of the most talented. Hard to beat that combo!
This gurl definitely hasss it! Lol Im just a drummer hahaha. Dope how now you can apply almost anything to music now. Got 4 different things going on and gotta do it simultaneously.
Megan Pressley, He still teaches at Salem and I'm in 8th Grade. Mr Hinson is the greatest band teacher I know. My brother went to Salem 2010-2011 he always wanted to play snare with Carolina Crown but he's turning 21 so yeah AGE OUT. I hope to play Snare for the Bluecoats, Cavaliers, or Blue Devils so yeah...
Megan Pressley Thank You! I saw you at Night Beat in Winston Salem. I don't want to Audition until I'm 15 because I think 14 is a little too young I don't really know...
Dylan Couch even the experience of auditioning at a young age and not necessarily marching is always a good thing. The more experience you can gain the better
Wow, what the sound. Love the sound, love the gear set. I want to ask about the keyboard set. I see AKAI MPK 249. and, what the name of the other keyboard? Thank you.
Hi there! My name is Elizabeth, and I'm 15, turning 16 in January. I've played the piano for 8 years but am wondering if I'd be able to pick up the synth fairly quickly? I'd love to audition for a drum corp one day but don't know how that'd work since I haven't played a synth before. This is such a cool video!!
Lizzy Life hi Elizabeth! You've got half the battle solved already by being a great pianist. But like I said that's only half the battle. The other half is understanding how your equipment works, how to hook it up, create sounds, etc. A lot of world class drum corps have a specific sound person who is there to help set up and manage all electronics in the corps (I do this at phantom now). That can be helpful when you go audition so you can learn how your equipment works. Feel free to contact me meganellie14@gmail.com if you have any specific questions about equipment or auditions I'd be happy to help!
Megan Budway Thank you so much!! I'll definitely look into finding the right equipment and a place to practice :) I'm going to try and join the marching band at my school next year to gain experience and see what it's like (I just need to convince my parents to let me do band alongside tennis haha). Thank you again for your help!
i wish we could afford electronics like this, but it's just high school so i can see why we wouldn't have it. we actually just replaced our entire setup (sub, speakers, mixer, sampler, etc) and man the more they give me to do the more excited i am to rehearse.
Hey there! This summer we ran mainstage through the smaller controller you see at the top of my set up. That's where all of the samples come from too. The larger synth is a Yamaha Motif that we used the for the on board sounds
Jasem J holy shit an nc girl that's awesome. Riverside in Durham here, I marched alchemy last WGI season. You are amazing. I have a friendship with one of Panther creeks tubas
I'm March snare for Apex Friendship High School for 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 in Apex NC. My brother marched snare for Apex High School in 2011, 2012, and 2013.
I have been a fan of Phantom Regiment since the eighties when they performed a competition doing phantom of the opera Andrew Lloyd Webber would have been proud
@Megan Pressley How good does one have to be to be selected for a synth part for a world or open class corps? I can currently play Mozart's Turkish March (until the octave sixteenths) and I'm learning Chopin's Op. 64 No. 1 (Minute Waltz). I have been learning piano on my own for the past two years after discontinuing lessons from a neighborhood teacher whom Ive been learning under for over 5 years. I've been playing the piano for 10 years (though i never practiced much in my earlier years, so i'm quite behind). I am 16 and play trumpet for my high school band, but piano was always something I was better at performing ( but probably still suck at lol) Any help appreciated.
Daaang... I play piano, but not with all the extra buttons and stuff... That's impressive. Also, why do all the synth players always have to be so pretty?
Were the enya-like vocals recorded for phantom or stripped from somewhere? Also were you using ableton or is it all built in? kinda late :/ This is awesome! great job :)
Megan Budway just for an update, you single-handedly sparked the match for me to play synth. I now play synth in my schools marching band in the fall and currently play synth for another school for their indoor percussion program. Thank you so much, cuz I freaking love synth. Happy holidays!

From a Cumberland valley front ensemble section leader during the marching season of 2017, 2018
Also idk if u know anyone in guard but Caroline culwell was in the phantom regiment in the 2016 season and she went to my school so yeah

Her forearms are not thick, though.
Man. As a synth player in my high school marching band and winter drumline, this is really inspiring to watch.
Quinn G thank you :) I just want people to respect this position in the marching arts more
@@MeganBudway same is synths don’t get the respect that we deserve
There is nothing better than watching someone doing something they love. As far as music goes, you are the second I've had the pleasure of watching who just genuinely loves what they're doing, the first being my first section leader. You're inspiring, keep loving what you do. Have a great day
Phil Man thank you so much! I really appreciate your supportive words 😊
God synths sound so damn awesome. Like at Colts camps for ensemble, half the time I'm listening to the synth.

Yeah I prefer the upper two tones myself 😉

Great job! Loved your energy when playing the show. Awesome work this year Phantom!
Wish I was able to see this year's show in person. Hopefully next year!
This really has me motivated to play my part as a synth in my competition tomorrow thank you for this boost of confidence
Your smile and love for the music is taking my breath away.

I can.tell you have the gift of feeling the soul of the music flows through you keep up the great playing
I NEVER Underestimated the Front Ensemble! Great Job!
That's amazing how you can multitask like that AND show so much emotion while playing... this is beautiful, you are beautiful, and that corps is beautiful, go Phantom! SUTA!!!!
God I love this show, really wish I had auditioned last two years. Hope you come back to see this years show! Super fun 😊 Good job btw!
Matthew Harris of course I'll see the show I'm on staff!! 😂😊
Megan Budway I realized that at camp 😂😂
wow that is incredible, fabulous, so talented, AND pretty you got it all mate
This video just came across my channel feed 8 years after it was aired. At THAT moment we were looking at the sexiest woman alive. AND one of the most talented. Hard to beat that combo!
We competed with the phantom regiment back in high school. They are freaking beasts🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I play synth for my high school I came here for inspiration on how other synth players look when they play, pretty helpful video 👍
This lady has great talent
The amount of multi tasking you're doing made my brain hurt
You are really great having fun is they key and you nailed it I hope you still play keyboards you are awesome at it
You have such a lovely smile
This gurl definitely hasss it! Lol Im just a drummer hahaha. Dope how now you can apply almost anything to music now. Got 4 different things going on and gotta do it simultaneously.
Awesome keyboard playing
she's now a Ninja, im so proud of her, and i dont even Know her 😅😅 keep it up!
This is awesome real talent and great performance
Me marching snare suddenly seems a lot less complicated now
i feel bad for that macbook
Milo Johnson oh god
You know when it's really hot outside when you have to put a fan over the synth laptop to prevent it from overheating
My band teacher talks about you sometimes eventually. Anyways, Mr Hinson says Hi.
Dylan Couch oh my gosh tell him I said hi!! I hope he's doing well

Wow, what the sound. Love the sound, love the gear set. I want to ask about the keyboard set. I see AKAI MPK 249. and, what the name of the other keyboard? Thank you.
The other keyboard is a Yamaha Motif. The better of version of that synth nowadays is the Yamaha Montage
This is dope

I love this! What a fantastic video. What equipment did you work with all summer? What program(s) did you use to create those synth sounds?

She is so beautiful!
Had I known this existed years ago....
Did they have you audition as a keyboard player?
Daniel Ortiz nope! I've played synth ever since I joined the activity
This is amazing! Did you go to Panther Creek HS?
Jasem J I did! I graduated in 2013
Small World! I'm from New Hampshire but I went to Cary High my freshman year in 2014. PC has a great music program.

I go to school with a former phantom snare. Do you know Mike Abel?
The Pan-Michigander yes!!! Mike is the man 😊

Were the enya-like vocals recorded for phantom or stripped from somewhere? Also were you using ableton or is it all built in? kinda late :/ This is awesome! great job :)
drummerXjs87 I asked them while i was at a camp this past week and they have someone create them for them, and some sounds they already own.
There are points where your movement looks outright inhuman and robotic. It's really awesome
Hi! This is a really cool vid! I have a quick question tho. What software are you using on your computer in this video?
Lenny appleton hey! We run Mainstage 3 on our macs
Megan Budway just for an update, you single-handedly sparked the match for me to play synth. I now play synth in my schools marching band in the fall and currently play synth for another school for their indoor percussion program. Thank you so much, cuz I freaking love synth. Happy holidays!
ahh...super fun.
:)
si
are all the synth players like this at phantom
Thank you youtube.
I’m told there is a synth in this video..
Awesome! Did you use a pedal, or did you use Mainstage to sustain for certain moments?
I had 4 pedals in all. One volume pedal and one sustain pedal for each synth I had
What was the 4th pedal you used? Or is there a third synth I'm not seeing..
She meant like a volume pedal for each synth and a sustain pedal for each synth
is the fan to help it not over heat?
It's so she doesn't get too sweaty
Yes it's for the laptop! Don't listen to him
Lol okay
You should do a video of like your tour recap
Then there’s me with the Yamaha MM6 the school had
Earrape at 6:50 lol
yo look so badassssssssssss thoooooooooooooooooooooo
What did you record this with?
Laurie Pavero I recorded this with my cell phone I propped up on the edge of my cart
Damn your phone has a really good camera and decent mic lol
Laurie Pavero lmao all phone cameras look the exact same.... They all look just fine and they do the same thing
Welcome Men of Culture
I still dislike electric instrument being allowed. I know it’s been a long time but I’m not a fan.
