    tbh its nice to see other people talk about the modules they didn't vibe with. so much of this seems to be about figuring out a workflow that works with you but it sure does sometimes feel embarrassing to spend a bunch of money on a module and then have to come to terms with the fact that you kinda hate it.

    Grids is best used imo when you combine the outputs with your own sequences using logic, this way you can get little additions to your own ideas rather than just replacing them. FYI OXI One has this built into it!

    Good takes. I've sold some of the same modules and will keep some of the others for as long as I'm using Eurorack. For anyone just getting into modular reading this: the only way to learn what works for you is the hard way, and I've rebought some of the things that I thought didn't work for me the first time.
    Was gearing up to shake my fist when I saw Soundstage on this list, but you've got the correct take on it! I did sell my Jumble Henge for SS due to the lack of level control and CV over depth, and since getting a Vortices I think they're the best set of mixing limitations in Eurotown.
    Full-size Rings is far more playable than micro, if I'm not using it as a resonator or weird delay it makes a nice FM voice or chord generator. Just like any multimode thing, leave it in the mode you like. (That's my secret with Stages: it gets used mostly as 6 of whatever I need.)

    I get a similar feeling when using some of the Mutable gear: I'm not creating the patch - Emilie's creating the patch and I'm just s facilitating vessel.

    • @thomastoews7850

      this is i think why grids clicks with me. I've always felt like just a vessel or a component of the music process. That feeling remains unchanged when i use grids. It makes so much sense to break down the drum programming into "more" "less" and "different" the way grids does. Those are the "parameters" i play with when i play other instruments. It's just so intuitive.

    Looks like you’ve sold everything that’s non-performative or takes too long to set up and just gathers dust.
    Your case looks like a performative effects proceeding unit for incoming signals through a looper, spectral processing and reverb with performative functions on the lower row. Nice setup. I love pulling in a live tv news channel and transforming into an ambient rhythmic soundscape.
    I like how your case is super focused and this is the key to endless creativity in my opinion. The larger a single case, the more paralysis of ideas but going back to a single oscillator case has reenergised me to restart my RUclips videos again recently.
    Thanks for your thoughts on why gear hasn’t worked for you and I agree you on most Endorphines and Mutable gear.

    Nice rundown. I've sold way more Eurorack modules than this. I get why you didn't like Stages, but it's one of my favorites. True, there are too many different alternate firmware choices and some of them are quite confusing. I use one of the easier alternates. I frequently use Stages as six LFOs, six S&Hs, six decay envelopes, etc..

    Great video and very fair points on some popular modules... Most modules that got me into modular were disappointments (clouds, grids, rings). Don't freak out if that happens to you, THERE IS plenty of amazing modules out there > Just dig a bit and test stuff up (for me it was the Akemie's Taiko > Looking forward to get the Castle).

  • @ThMntnst
    @ThMntnst 11 месяцев назад

    Interesting to see, what people let go of and how that developed with getting to know ones own preferences more. I like the „zeitgeist“ of your video, since I had just gone that route around three weeks ago.
    I even sold some of the same modules in that „purge“. The thing was that I just got modules for around 2,5 years now and some of the very first had been out of „budgetconstraints“ (as in: I want to start with something that already works for things) and in all honesty got replaced for quite some time with modules neighboring them.
    Some even made me feel uncomfortable, because I pushed myself to use them. I went on to buy 1 module per 4 - 5 sold ones that I really liked to use and so got the opportunity to clear space and develop my musical idea while doing it.

    What is the airstreamer vca envelope trick you were talking about being lucky with learning? Can you explain it

    • @thismeanswarbasse
      @thismeanswarbasse  6 месяцев назад

      Typically an envelope module is just going to output CV of its shape upon each trigger, where you’d then need to combine that and the signal you want to affect with it using a VCA, as that CV is the “Voltage” that’s “Controlling the Amplifier”. Airstreamer lets you pass in a signal that you want to be controlled by its envelope, and receive the output of it instead of only the CV of the envelope shape. So I could plug the audio out of my oscillator into airstreamer and then take the output of airstreamer and bring it over to my filter and effects and whatnot. Normally you’d pass that osc signal into a VCA module and connect your function / envelope modules output to the cv control input of the VCA. Airstreamer has that basic required VCA built in, and when I was designing my first little palette case I didn’t even realize I needed a VCA with most envelope modules and didn’t account for one.

    Just scanning through the timeline before I watch the video, I am getting a bit scared! A lot of these modules are some of my favorites. I guess that's the beauty of the empty canvas the is Eurorack, something for everyone, just not everything for you.

    • @thismeanswarbasse

      theres nothing wrong with disagreeing with me and even making a case entirely out of my reverb history is just as valid as my current cases. No bad modules, just bad modules for me and what I was after

    • @thismeanswarbasse
      @thismeanswarbasse  4 месяца назад +1

      I personally cant stand sample management, but love sample mangling. I want it to be quick to grab a bit of live audio and really mess with it. I was hoping I could use the bitbox as a clocked live looper, quickly storing loops I could come back to or retrigger. That process involves 5 or so touch screen presses each time, and some settings reset to defaults even after you adjust them. It was a huge pain. If you are looking to load it with a bunch of samples and have a ton of triggerable sounds its probably great for you. But I got rid of it quick and now have a morphagene playing this role
