I think Hostess did that with a lot of their products. We used to have a Hostess store in my city and it was pretty popular but as the taste changed the store became less popular. I haven't eaten one in over 10 years but judging from what I've heard over that time from others the taste is not the taste it was when we were kids.

The thing is hostess (and little Debbie) snacks are not “classic American snacks.” They’re more pop culture than actually part of an American diet. Most kids had one in their lunch packs in school and haven’t had one since.
This is right. I have never had any of these “snack cake” brand items since elementary school, and I don’t know anyone who would voluntarily seek one out to eat in our adulthood. It is just like a collective memory that all Americans share from childhood.
