This long version I consider one of the greatest videos ever made, aesthetically, artistically, culturally, sociologically, anthropologically... A watershed cultural moment. It brings tears to my eyes.
@Louise X Yup, agreed. I wouldn't have articulated it as clearly as you but I think I experienced something close to this in the mid-80s when I first noticed this video.

Yes indeed, musically it's the peak of McLaren's entire career I think. I bought both the vinyl 12" single of the title track (with this epic on the B-side) and the album CD. Outstanding!
@@Skinnylandia oh ..you don t know the truth ?? You don t know the world sells ?? You can just try to learn ..you ll have all the informations ..you ll see it will be better to you friend 😉😄😽
I agree - and this is one of the greatest 12" singles of the entire 1980s. Masterful, dramatic, lyrical, carefully balanced: the production hasn't aged at all. Also, Lourdes Morales is a way better singer than Madonna, she invests the lead vocal with an authentic feeling of vulnerability and adventure, of a personal journey into the future. It's really odd that this and two or three other tracks on the album seem to be the only songs she ever committed to tape - you can tell that she is quite a good singer (though she disliked some aspects of how she was handled by McLaren and his team). This album is long overdue for a Special Edition - which should include both the amazing nine-minute cut here and the original, unreleased edit (before Moore and Orbit got to work on it). The original edit, according to Mark Moore, contained almost no spoken samples - neither of McLaren, nor from the Paris movie. It seems to have been a more straightforward r'n'b/house track.
@@shepardwilde4701 NO creo que Madonna lo haya hecho mejor, simplemente se vendio mejor. Las 2 obras son buenas pero en cuanto a arte esto es mucho mejor
Malcolm was an interesting, I'll say genius. He pre-empted trends before they happened and while some called him an exploiter, he had the skill to reinvent constantly. From punk to rap to hip hop to opera to waltz to house to jazz.
“Sometimes on a Legendary night like the closing of garage When the crown is called down the spirits Listen and you will hear the footsteps Of all the houses that walked here before” This must be what all the balls feel like. I’d love to attend a Legendary ball one day and just sink in this beautiful culture.
Love this song! When this album came out it was the years when I went to the disco and this song was one of my favorites. First I bought the vinyl and then the CD ... in 2020 I discovered the fabulous series "Pose" and to see again the video now it makes more sense: in Italy the reality of the Ball was not well known.
Agree, fabulous song and production; this is plainly one of the greatest dance 12" remixes of all time. Emotionally very engaging as well. I too bought the 12" and later the album on CD. This epic version should have been included as a bonus track on re-releases of the CD, shouldn't it? - it is the primary take, at least among those that were released. The album edit was produced with this one as the starting point. Also would love to hear a demo or an early studio mix - what the song sounded like before the producers set to work on it.
Voguing was also seen on American Bandstand and Soul Train in the 1970's but it originates from Harlem, NY as seen in Paris Is Burning. I think alot of the Legends and Divas would be so impressed at how far we've come in terms of Gay Acceptance these past 33 since the Documentary was done.
@@laminage This song also alludes (and pays homage) to the Philly soul classic "Love is the Message" - there have been several fine versions of that one since the original in 1973. On the 1982 version by Brooklyn Express (also on RUclips) we can clearly hear antecedents of DIV - the bassline for example, and the feel of the keyboard harmonics. I was unaware of this link to the earlier classic until around two years ago or so, but I wouldn't say that McLaren nicked those elements, both songs are quite original enough to stand on their own two feet.
Listened to this again today ( Easter 21 ) . For a tune that is over 30 years old it is so fresh ; even today . Outstanding production with fantastic layering of instrumentation . Video is very simple but so effective.
I absolutely agree, the production here (indeed on the entire album, but especially here) is flawless and hasn't aged at all. In some ways this music is as layered as Santana or Tangerine Dream (two other fave bands of mine) but it still sounds graceful, lyric, dramatic and effortlessly groovy. I would have loved to hear what the original edit sounded like, before Moore and Orbit got their hands on it, even though they clearly improved the song a great deal and should be seen as co-creators.
If they knew back then that so many years later they would have such a big impact? Omg I could cry. This is the best video I've ever seen and this video will be in my heart and life forever. Thank you !
Superb production, mixing, vocals and musicianship on all hands. I bought the 12" of this (B-side of the Waltz Darling 12") back in 1989 and still have it.
Was a masterpiece for the ages. I've been a house baby since '86. Saw Paris is burning in the mid- '90s..brought back memories of my club days at the Twilight Zone in Toronto.
Eins der besten Videos, die ich je gesehen habe. Es ist so schön, diese schönen Menschen tanzen zu sehen zu dieser Musik aus einer Zeit, als die Welt noch einigermaßen in Ordnung war.
Malcolm McLaren, was a master of the cultural mash-up. It was McLaren who sent Adam Ant out into the world with the idea to mix a “dandy highwayman” image with African drumming; who crushed New York’s nascent hip-hop sound with squaredancing; and who mixed classical waltz music with dance styles cribbed from gay clubs before Madonna had heard of voguing. Together with Mark Moore, Orbit set about mixing “Deep in Vogue” from Waltz Darling, which resulted in the classic “Banjie Realness” mix in 1989. McLaren was so impressed that an edited version was used on the album, in place of the original version.
Conceptually both the song and, the sound, the choreography were far ahead. She was not understood by everyone in that historical moment that we lived. Perhaps not even today it would be understood, or at least not by everyone. Amazing Malcom & Co
I first heard this in late 88 / 89 on Sunrise radio 88. Something on the Fm BAND it was played by Dj Louise and WHAT A CHOON IT WAS AND STILL IS ... Malcom McLaren , William orbit , mark moore , willy ninja some real heavyweights on this slate .. bad bad bad .....
This Is A Music Masterpiece In Every Single Way. The Production Is Amazing. The Video Boosted The Hype But The Song Is Simply Amazing. True Perfection.! 👌
The first time I heard this Music Masterpiece on the radio back in the day I rushed to the record store and bought the maxi single with the remixes. The song has been overlooked I think. When the video came out it boosted the hype. But the song itself Is Just Brilliant.
I agree, great musicianship on all hands with that jazz/funk vibe (especially pn the languid sax solo, which I think is Candy Dulfer - guitar by Dave Stewart), beautiful and evocative vocals (Lourdes Morales is just perfect for this one - how come she didn't appear on any other records?) and great sense of pacing. The production is spectacular and unlike in a lot of tracks from those years it hasn't aged at all - it still sounds clear, warm, dramatic, exciting and sensuous. I was around when this one hit MTV in 1989 and I noticed it almost at once, though it took a few sightungs before I figured out what the track was and by whom, because it's an unusually long video for those days. I knew it was a very special track and after a while got hold of the Waltz Darling 12", with this one on the B side: still have it in great condition. What can I say more, this is a sublime record! :)
Around 1988 and 1989 Vouging, was in, in New York. All danced like super models. McLaren took from it. The movement of super models came at the same time.

Yes it is, musically this is as flawless and dramatic as some iconic Pink Floyd or Bowie tracks - and then the superb video... The whole album deserves a deluxe edition with remixes, outtakes and demos. I would love to hear a rough mix/demo of what DIV sounded like at an early stage, before Moore and Orbit reworked it - of course they made it into the epic it is here, but I'm curious what it would have been like before that. McLaren had a finished single edit he had first meant to use, and according to Moore it contained no vocals beyond the sung lead (by Lourdes Morales) and a few backing vocal lines, also no samples from "Paris is Burning". The trademark "S'Express" stab riff must be an addition by Moore too, but it's a perfect fit here.
You can’t underestimate the impact on culture the late, great Malcolm McLaren had! He was the one who brought break dancing, scratching and graffiti art to the UK and gave us The Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow and brought Vogueing into the mainstream, allowing Madonna to steal the look and style to relaunch herself. I have an hour long interview with McLaren from 1989 on VHS with this version of Deep In Vogue when he talks about the inspiration for his music and this track, and he said that Jeff Beck and Bootsy Collins were also playing on it. This is one of the greatest videos to ever be on RUclips and it’s just a shame it’s not viewed more often! The absolute BEST!

Right! I saw this on MTV at the time and it immediately caught my attention. Since it was an unusually long video and I often zapped right into it from another channel, it took several times before I managed to note the title and who was behind it, but once that had happened I knew I would have to get hold of the record. :) This is a brilliant song, recording and of course video.

Since it was an unusually long video and I often zapped right into it from another channel, it took several times before I managed to note the title and who was behind it, but once that had happened I knew I would have to get hold of the record. :) This is a brilliant song, recording and of course video.
