Yes, he's full of shit but had a lot of moxie - and heart - paid for Sid's bail. Even Lydon, who had some 1.6 million stolen from him could not bring himself to not attend the man's funeral. Not just a haberdasher, more a situationist/iconoclast, from a time when people had genuine personalities and not venal, commodified "personalities". Very interesting.

    Glen was in the band before John, let alone Sid. They ended up kicking out Glen because he was too serious which is how Sid ended up as the bass player. Sid got his name because he was bit by someones hamster, which was named Sid and when it bit him he kept saying how vicious the creature was. John and Steve gave him the name, not Malcolm. Also, John and Sid were mates, to this day John has a ton of guilt for bringing him into the Pistols because he thinks had he never done that Sid never would have met Nancy,... or more like, Nancy never would have given Sid the time of day. She was pure groupie and never bothered with anyone not in a band..... well, except drug dealers. Malcom is doing his usual embellishing, but that's always been who Malcolm is.

      The quote reads:
      Better a spectacular failure, than a benign success
      Whereas in an early 00’s documentary Malcolm said:
      It is better to be a flamboyant failure
      than any kind of benign success
      I know I’m being pedantic but the use of language was one McLaren’s key tools and flamboyant is more apposite than spectacular. I guess it’s ironic that I’m being picky about this given how wilfully loose McLaren was with facts, however, he also believed in the power of the story and telling it right.

If Glen had remained in the group, the Pistols would have had a chance to be more than a one record group. The deeply untalented Sidney the Vicious hastened the end of the group. Nihilism is not interesting. The Clash were centered on the "worthy musicianship" of Mick Jones & Topper Headon. They got better & better with every album. Did they "sink into the mire of ok-ish"? • @ericmalone3213
      @ericmalone3213 2 года назад +3

      @@neilprocter3755 A highly subjective viewpoint you're displaying. The Sex Pistols music was only known to certain households. Their hype, hyperbole & media horseshite ("throwing up on stage" "throwing up on the audience" "urinating on the audience" etc etc) initially got a great deal of coverage--all nonsense of course--compounded by Sid's killing of Nancy & his subsequent overdose death. The tabloid coverage eclipsed the music at the time as far as "household" name recognition was concerned.
      "The Pistols are legendary. They were from the getgo" "Legendary" (like "iconic") belongs to the language of publicists & media hacks. What the Pistols were at the get-go was an example to other bands that you didn't have to have much skill or ability, you could get on stage in a local venue and play to 100 of your pals. That's great when you're barely out of your teens and have to start somewhere. But the key to creativity is evolution, not being The Ramones for 40 years.
      "The Clash ended up being merely stadium status." Merely? This is subjective belittlement. The only time The Clash played in stadiums was at the very end of their career when they opened for The Who. You seem to have forgotten The Sex Pistols shameless nostalgia act, the 1996 "Filthy Lucre" tour, which included stadiums. The Clash left behind a great deal more substance , versatility & intelligence than The Sex Pistols could ever have mustered. The Pistols album is 3 chord monotony. Take the vocals out & the music easily passes for re-heated New York Dolls. The Clash had much more to offer just on their first album alone.
      Kleenex is a household name.
      The best group to have emerged from the so called "punk" scene is The Slits, featuring John The Rotten's step-daughter Arri Up. Theirs was the most original, beyond category music. CUT is as fresh today as was in 1979.
      Malcolm McLaren was always revising history to suit whatever tale he wanted to tell. He proved that if you're a very clever artful dodger, you can skip along on the bullshit for a good stretch of time, even tho you possess zero talent or ability beyond being a good bloviating interview subject.

Your polemic about the Pistols takes me back to the good old days of the late ‘70s, when punk and post-punk, the new musick as it was initially proclaimed, thrived on such things. There was nothing like deep disagreement to fuel the fire so to speak; punk was against everything, even itself!
      Not surprisingly we’re going to have to agree to disagree. I’m afraid whilst I recognise that The Clash are an important part of the cannon, I didn’t, and still don’t, find them as exciting as the Pistols. In that sense we arrive at the same point we were always at.

      @@MrBmic Not so fast!,I hate to break it to you. But I come from the home of "HOUSE MUSIC" Chicago,Illinois AKA the WINDY CITY.I've been DJing since I was 14 years old.in the 1970s.Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals" isn't house music, dude. Now,let's be very clear, when you say,"This was a hard house"maybe you mean as in house party's(Literally in someone's house, playing Hip-hop?)But if you're calling a Hip-hop record a house record,I don't know what to tell you.Chicago house DJs hated Hip-hop!they didn't play it for shit!Trust me,I know,I was a Hip-hop DJ.and all my friends were HOUSE DJ's and they never played it,and hated it.they would always say,"You can't dance to it" or "the beat is too slow" all those house records you mentioned.and know and love,I had those fresh from,DJ.INTERNATIONAL records.(the record store, that was in Cicero,Illinois.they moved their store 3 different times in Cicero.DJ JESSE worked at the one in Cicero,by Cermak and Cicero ave.he made some house records too.The other record store i would buy my vinyl records would be at HOT JAMS by Curie high school, those guys thought I was a spy for DJ INTERNATIONAL RECORDS,I told them am Hip-hop DJ,but I would still buy house music records for the crowds. My other and favorite vinyl record store is the Legendary GRAMOPHONE RECORDS.and its still in business till this very day.So for the digital djs that say vinyl is dead, think again!but I have all those "Classic house records" from the 80s and 90s.Come on man,I ain't new to this!I even have all of Malcolm McLaren's whole catalog on vinyl."Move your body" I had it when it first came out.As a matter of fact, there was 2 different versions, one by FARLEY JACKMASTER FUNK,and the other one by JM SILK.I use to mix and blend those 2 records like a pro, bro.

    I remember one night I was in New York City. I was just wandering in Soho, probably a Friday night I think. And I was looking at the restaurants, people eating in the restaurants, having dinner. Those posh restaurants in Soho. And as I was walking by a restaurant, I looked inside. Guess who I saw? Malcolm McLaren. Malcolm McLaren. I remember standing there, looking at him and saying, Damn, that's Malcolm McLaren. That's Malcolm McLaren. Shook my head, thinking, this guy used to be a punk. And there he is, sitting in a posh restaurant, having dinner. Having dinner. It must have been maybe 1991, probably 1990. Around there. And then a few years later, I heard he was dead.
