Can we stop for a moment and appreciate Worf's mindfulness here?
The second officer is ordering him to arrest one of that officer's closest compatriots- who happens to be the chief engineer- COMPLETELY out of the blue.
And his response- a simple, soft "Sir?"- conveys absolutely everything it needs to- "Are you sure", "is this a joke", "did I just hear you correctly"- in roughly one second.
Data confirms, and Worf is off.

3:53 and onward - can we take a moment to appreciate the construction of this sequence? It's just Data talking calmly (as Data would) with the computer, figuring out the mystery, then walking into the hall and getting in touch with Worf, taking all the proper actions in the proper order. Nothing flashy at all. The power of the scene comes entirely from purposeful shots, Spiner's delivery, some well-placed music, and the viewer's knowledge that the stakes are colossal.

Data isn't looking for 'eliminating the impossible' like his erstwhile idol Sherlock Holmes; he's looking for something we would today call "probable cause." He's only looking to establish that it was 1• possible, 2• likely, that Geordi's shuttle trip wasn't uneventful. The shuttle _could have_ been under the influence of a tractor beam; the isolinear chips _could have_ been replicated by Romulans. Data doesn't keep sleuthing the mystery: He stops investigating and addresses the credible threat of a potential spy/saboteur/assassin on the ship then and there. He acts on speculation and conjecture, and like a canny detective ends up being right.

Data knows what's going on now, he realizes it's to late to warn Geordi what's happening to him so he knows he has to have him arrested before he can act. At 1:27, Data should’ve immediately contacted security. Yes, he didn’t yet have evidence that Geordie was receiving signals. But he was obviously suspicious enough to then go inspect Geordie’s shuttle. Riker just finished explaining how urgent the situation was and how big the stakes were. But instead of calling Worf and alerting him to a potential security issue, he decided to do more investigating first. I get how television works. You have to build up the tension so the resolution to the story is more satisfying. But in this case, they made Data look incompetent. Just imagine if Geordie had already killed the governor while Data was walking down to the shuttle bay.

God this scene is masterclass. From start to finish, everything is paced exactly as it needs to be, not to mention every character is at their best here.
Ryker matter of factly states the stakes and lets it be known what must be done, nothing can be left to chance. Simple, solid, to the point, and with gravitas underlying the direness of the situation.
Data meticulously breaking down each clue until he has his answers. And even after discovering that it was most likely Geordi because of the neural link, Data does not simply go confront him, as he doesn't have the whole picture. As Ryker said, "Who, what, where, when, and why". Where as others might have instinctively jumped the gun after uncovering this fact, Data completes the investigation on the transport, knowing more details must be determined. He knows Geordi is involved...but why? He needs the rest of the information to make the most efficient action. Once done, he knows the threat is imminent and contacts Worf, letting him know with a more stern then average voice to do what must be done. That simple "That is an order" may sound calm and simple, but coming from Data gives Worf everything he needs to know that Data isn't kidding around, this is IMPORTANT.
Worf, with a simple "Sir?" gives off the entire energy needed that would otherwise take several questions: "What do you mean, why Geordi, are you sure, do you mean now, what is happening?" But he doesn't have time, nor does he need it. Once Data gives him that solid confirmation, no other questions are needed. Worf is on the move, and he knows it matters, hence why he did not hesitate to take down those guards when they grabbed him. The situation is serious, and he knows it.
But boy, Geordi's depiction takes the cake. The center frame, slightly deformed view with the unnerving music, the stillness, occasional readjusting, the stiffness while not moving, the slightly faster pace while walking, ALL of it makes you unsettled by Geordi's presence and his current state of mind. You KNOW he's not right, and in this moment, he's dangerous.
Of course the ending is in the next clip, but the climax comes after the tension has been rising for this entire scene, we think Geordi is about to act once he enters the bay, but is delayed by O'Brian's interruption, but rather then be relieved, it only results in even higher tension once O'Brian walks away, as Geordi is even closer now, moving slower, almost stalking his target. Fast movement wouldn't do it here, that would ruin the tension. No, it has to be a hunt, which in a sense almost makes it seem as if Geordi is fighting against it, maybe deep down somehow we'll believe he'll win. Worf steps in, but is blocked, giving a split second of panic that our last second rescue isn't going to work out. Then of course, the ending, the tension is broken with a stunned silence.
Thankfully, Data steps in at just the right time to explain the entire situation, and even THEN it's not a forgone conclusion, surmising logically that even Cpt. Picard may be responsible, showing that even to the end, Data was covering every base, as an android would.
Fantastic scene, great episode, definitely one of my favorites. I just can't stop rewatching it, so much fun.

It was stated that had he been an enlisted officer he would have already been a Captain. I believe in this scene he just wanted Geordie to double check his findings as Geordie technically is his boss in these matters. Miles was the Transporter Chief, but Geordie was Chief Engineer and had final say over the work. Even if Miles knew the answers he still needed to go through the proper channels.

So, actually, this has been discussed ALOT in the past. It is intended as an attempt to show what the VISOR shows, everything from infrared to ultraviolet, along with XRay, electromagnetic, and a few other particle emissions as the script needs. The VISOR itself is just a sensor, it doesn't filter out anything, so Geordi's visual cortex has to do all the filtering.
Interestingly, earlier in the episode, the romulan subcommander says that direct access to geordi's visual cortex means that he see's whatever is shown him. HOWEVER, his visual cortex would already be adept at filtering out extraneous or dangerous stimulus, given the visor's function.

2 cans of your favourite varieties(yes, 2 varieties not 2 of the same) of beans. in my case that's red and black. but you do you. the two cans are one can of each. just to be super clear.
    dice the ham.
put the sofrito and the oil in a medium pan. and mix them up with a wooden spoon on low heat. until they form almost a sauce and they are fragrant.
add the ham and raise the heat to medium/low.
once the ham becomes aromatic you add the beans, liquid and all, to the pan. if you like hot sauce this is the perfect moment to add some.
cook them until the beans are as soft as you like them.
this makes 4 generous servings and its quite delicious.
    specially with white rice.
    and as always....ENJOY!

Coming back to this again (LOL) the way Data addresses the computer feels eerily reminiscent of the way someone like me approaches and refines the results from my interrogating the current level of AI... Sort of a 'Super-Google'

Isn't it just amazing how tense a dialogue between the emotionless android and the ship's computer can be? Now that is acting and masterful use of subtlety. Ever heard of this [insert lensflares, loud music, several explosions, emo reactionary characters] JJ Abrams?

    "That is an order"
Discipline is so lax on the Enterprise that Worf didn't even think he was being serious.

    • @nightrunnerxm393
      @nightrunnerxm393 2 года назад +4

Well...normally the orders make immediate sense, or come with a bit of explanation since it's usually good for people to know _why_ they're being told to do a thing, not just that "Person with higher rank is giving me an order, so I won't think about it and just do what I'm told." History has a lot of examples of how that can turn out badly, so Starfleet's doctrine allows for seeking an explanation under most circumstances. _And_ Data's been known to give orders that don't make immediate sense ("Drop the shields" in the episode "Hero Worship" for example), and the order in this case is to arrest someone who hasn't done anything (that Worf knows of) to justify that action. He was seeking a confirmation, which he got. What he _didn't_ get was an explanation, which itself told him something important--There's no _time_ to explain, so he has to do things quickly. You can see how that plays out in the next scene, when Picard narrowly prevents Geordi from assassinating one of the Klingons.

@@BasicShapes That or ask " Did I hear you correctly, arrest LaForge? What is the charge?"..... But the simple "Sir?" I think was much more fitting the other options... I got to admit I did enjoy seeing Data use a more sharper tone to get the point across of "This is no joke, just do it." Then next line back to his normal tone as if the one prior was mimicking what he seen Picard do a few times with odd orders...
