They do it in buying cars, yachts and planes. You always ask. Why do you think homes come on the market from celebrities. That have a few homes and their accountant tells them what the total expenses of their homes combined, then they evaluate is it worth it for the time they spend there. Gardner, maid, security. That could be over $100K in salaries.
When I was younger and worked for Mercedes. Every millionaire always asked price. Ever heard of real estate mogul Manny Khoshbin. He's worth about 250 million owns a fleet of hyper cars and has mentioned how much the tires, maintenance cost. At every exotic car show where he gets invites, he talks cost. "If you have to ask ..." is one of the sleeziest lines that are usually said by salesmen to act superior to the average person. I never used it when I worked for MBZ selling AMG's at $150k+
