Just noticed Terrance Martin on horn and keyboards. One of the reasons I love Herbie so much is because he's such a giving spirit to take on the next generation of jazz players and teach them what he knows. That is why the jazz medium is really so beautiful.
Unbelievable performance and quite different from the studio version!!! I was really expecting to hear more flute sounds and especially a flute solo, but the man on saxophone simply nailed it without the flute. They are all such incredible and creative performers. With such a combo, the music is art.
Does anyone feel like this is the ultimate jury for James Genus? Dude is a BEAST. “Oh, no that’s fine, Vinnie and Herbie, go ahead and break time, I got this.” By the way - he passed, A+.
I had front row seats for the Milwaukee show of this tour. It was ridiculous. The band was super tight, everyone's solos was smokin', and the best part for me was hearing these amazing tunes that I grew up with, and never thought I'd ever hear them live again, played with such energy and passion, and sounding so fresh.
I am so psyched to see Herbie and co. play this tune live. Actual Proof is one of the greatest compositions of the 1970s fusion/funk era. It is a master class in form and improvisation compressed into one tune. And it has an underlying deeper meaning and message as well - the title "Actual Proof" references the Buddha's flower sermon. Every musically minded person in this country needs to hear this tune and groove out on it.
Thank you for sharing the Faith reference to the 1974 Actual Proof Song? Have you heard the 1974 EWF Song Mighty Mighty or the Kool and the Gang 1974 Song Light of Worlds. Like Arsenio used to say Hmm Hmm Hmm.
Search RUclips for the Ray Riendeau & Martin Diamond live cover of this song. It's way faster and only bass & drums but holy mother of God, it'll make your scalp burn, it's so good.
Herbie is "the DON DADA." James Genus been around a minute BUT this was his coming out performance for the national audience! There's nothing like watching this on wide screen at home...Cats still talk about this show after over a year's time. Brilliance personified... Vinnie's been damn near as hot as Chris "Daddy" Dave on major drum assignments this decade. If you're not down with the West Coast Connection (see: Kamasi Washington, Ronald Bruner, Thundercat), then this is probably Terrance's (sax/keys) coming out party to you and the nation also!
Humanity can be so horrible & then there's something like this..I saw it last night it was incredible...if you see this show & looking for errors & to critique.. forget it..it's flawless
@Proton1 If you consider detroit techno ito be the jazz of electronic music... wait until you check out some more advanced stuff like Zenon Records. That stuff is on another level entirely. Techno is too simplisic and repetitive compared to it.
Vinnie drum doctors I'll never forget thank you ps tell Dave S from Belmar with sting Bruce Flora Erie boom AP etc what's up home team Herbie there are no words only Tony can speak on that love it great performance to all the musicians and the whole crew great video thks for sharing Angle F congas bongos would've been nice TW south Belmar NJ
This was damn near a coming out party for the bassist James Genus...dude was having to much fun...there are not enough accolades to give Herbie....hella national television performance!
@@AkilHenry folks misunderstood my comment. Yes, the dude has been around even with SNL but for non jazz aficionados and a square ass national audience of primarily Austin City Limit viewers it was a coming out party. Dude, I'm over 60 and my knowledge of bass players goes back to pre Paul Chambers. I rock from Mingus to McBride and all in between.
This is an ok "live" rendition of Actual Proof ... not the best I've seen. Bassist sounds like he didn't do his homework. However, it's still a cover of the masterpiece created by Herbie Hancock and his Headhunters in 1973, which can't be improved upon. The band was comprised of Hancock (keyboards), Bennie Maupin (reeds), Mike Clark (drums), Paul Jackson (bass), and Bill Summers (percussion).
@@BuddyStromboliDrums I wish I could agree with you but a couple of things I don’t know what hamfisted means, I know from past interviews with Herbie and other people talking about Vinnie they prefer Vinnie playing the way he played in this rendition. Can you search Herbie Hancock's Actual Proof Live and watch the most recent versions? he has videos of two completely different drummers from Vinnie but they still lay down the same head groove. Idk if that means he did a great job but I’d love to hear your opinion after you listen to the newer versions! Talk to you soon!

Dazzling display of raw unadulterated musicianship. Just incredible. We're all better for having seen this.
Man! Just listen to how Vinnie and James lock in with Herbie during his solo. Mind-blowing!
I lived in Austin for a year. I got to see one show while I was there and it was this. Brought me to tears.
This is the best Herbie solo I've seen in a while sheeeesh
yeah, ridiculous

I'd say he readily passed his "jury" 30+ years ago with the Brecker Bros.
Wow..These fabulous musicians have the BIGGEST ears known to man. Killer performance!!!

That Milwaukee show was off the hook!
JAMES GENUS ON THE BOTTOM END
Noided him and Vinnie lock in so well together
WOW!!!👍👍👍AS ONLY HERBIE CAN DO IT.VERY NICE.
I was at this Taping for ACL. Fantastic show. I was very very lucky to get picked in the ticket lottery. Once in a lifetime experience.

Impeccable recording of an impeccable performance! Thank you so, so much.
Thank God there are subtitles. I almost missed the piano solo.
This actually brings tears to my ears...God speaking through the keys
Yeah man....that is an emotional response...herbie is so down to earth and intense!!
BUDDHAHOOD SPEAKING THROUGH THE KEYS ❤🙏
amazing...James Genus and Vinni "meaty" players, love it that's how you play to hit the spot !!!
Vinnie Colaiuta. Kinda young, kinda wow. This a Great piece, Herbie's on top form. As always.
10,000 points for the Zappa reference.

Love Herbie’s lick at 5:13
Jeeez... I don’t understand how they play these accents/hits while Vinnie tornadoes through his solo. Top boss level, for sure!
Those cymbals sound amazing...what are they?
Paiste 602 Modern Essentials Vinnie helped with their conception

Coming out? Jamie's been out for years. Check him out with Breckers.
Nah, not coming out lol. He’s played with so many greats (Chick, Horace, Branford, Breckers etc) before this. He absolutely tore this up though

This video makes me want to play air bass guitar!
Zawinul apprécierait...
Concert ''de luxe'' !
Herbie wrote the book
Its actually a 6.7 gis composition...you can count it
Okay..thank you👍🙏🎹🎵

F**ckin' awesome
Can anyone name the musicians? I think it's Vinnie Coliatua on drums... maybe Matt Garrison on bass?
James Genus on bass
2:25
Hmmmmm......
I mis Bernie Maupin....
What a bottom end with Vinnie and Genus.
Vinnie is my favorite drummer but I think he could play a bit less on this tune. His drums are recorded really well here. That's not always the case.
He’s playing exactly the way herbie wants him to, that’s why he hired him.
Guitar solo????? IF you listen to Herbie Hancock and don't know what a bass is??
Bet, you "puke drummers" go out and study Mike Clark now?!🤣😂
DAMN. Most of what Vinnie was playing during Herbie's solo was trickier than his own solo!! GTFO!!!
ハービーの最初のシンセによるアドリブはこの日はいなかったリオネールへのオマージュなのか?それにしてもヴィニーは下半身が大きすぎ。

Why don’t you show James Genus how to play it then?
@@janemba204 I'd show him Paul Jackson! James can't play it and I can't either 😂
Sorry you can't hear it. Genus is amazing. You can't do homework and sound like it's 1973. Does Herbie try to go back no he plays in the present.
Bro what
Use your ears and shut your mouth. It's clear you never did your own homework. I guess you can't hear the low end. Get your ears checked.
Not the best version of this, Herbie and the drummer are playing exceptionally well while the bass player is hanging on like he doesn't know the form
DO you know what the form is or do you need someone to count for you?
Damn vinne butchered this shit
LOL HOW?
@@yakobdrums he just has a real hamfisted approach
