Seriously, you're spending at least $200 to WATCH a band and make memories. It really makes me wish I was around in the 60s, 70s, and 80s back when this technology didn't exist.
Filming it with your cell phone (probably ending up with shitty quality and never being watched) is a a waste of your own money and time. You know those people on the ground floor with the soundboards? THEY are the ones who are involved with filming the concert (along with obviously making sure the sound is working) with good quality for us fans to watch later.
Props to Josh for making some sort of statement even though others didn't seem to catch on.

Josh did the right thing! I was at 2006 rhcp show in front row it was crazy. Now some people actually go to a show to see the show through the tiny phone screen. They can do it at home!!
I saw them live in Zurich. There was not a second in which I thought "You know what - I need to record this concert with my shitty smartphone", I enjoyed every single moment, I was dancing and celebrating this band and their great music.
Ironically we wouldn't have this video if it wasn't for people with their phones out during the concert

When it comes to concerts in the 21st century, yes, people are obsessed with documenting rather than experiencing. Do they owe it to the band to be at rapt attention? I don't think so. Do they owe it to each other to not be disruptive? I think more so. It annoys the fuck out of me that people will stand up front and film and obscure/distract everyone behind them.
But that being said, Klinghoffer's response is pitch perfect. Flawlessly incorporating his own disapproval/parody of the audience's actions into the performance while still staying locked in and not derailing the performance is pretty classy and hilarious. +1 for him.
You can't pay to see a performance, and then expect the artist to give their best if you are being a bad crowd. They feed off of the crowd's reaction just as much as you feed off of them.
Dude really likes his phone he's using it daily, on the stage and even in his car when he's hitting a pedestrian crossing the road
All musicians, specially in rock, know that a concert is a give and take of energy with the audience.
If you're on stage, the reaction from the crowd can be an amazing boost to go beyond playing what is needed, or giving 110%, like an athlete hearing the crowd cheering.
Now, its like being an animal in a zoo, for the most part.
I imagine future generations sparing the humiliation of artits giving it all for a 5 minute shitty clip on youtube, and just going for holograms or 3d representations.

I used to be good friends with an event organizer at a pretty famous club where many top musical acts would perform. he used to tell me that he would tear his hair out if he was at a show where the audience just didnt react to the musician. he knew it meant that that specific act would never be back at his venue.

I LOVE THIS. Phones at concerts are honestly the most annoying thing ever. I don't see how anyone can possibly enjoy the show when they're viewing it through a five-inch rectangle.

You know what makes me even happier? Watching a fucking concert directly with my eyes, instead of through a 5" screen. Being in the moment, truly letting yourself go in the music is a memory that will last a lifetime. There's no point of even attending concerts if you're watching it through a phone.
Also, sticking your phone out makes you a douchebag. Plain and simple.

I love not using my phone the whole time because this way I'm the one who gets to look artists in the eyes or when they come down they always come to me and not to the people with the phones. Got to hug Iggy Pop this way and scream into the mic, best day of my life. What do you have? A video of me doing that? Well, congrats!

ICYMI while you were absently glaring at your phones...next time you go to a show leave your phone at home and ENJOY THE SHOW! you'll cherish the memory much more later in life when your iphone is long gone because you were paying attention to what was actually happening in the real world.

All celebrities should just appreciate that people goes to their concert, whether the audience decide to use their cellphone, or not throughout the whole concert. They're still supporting them.

I film and take pictures for myself at big shows because in New Zealand you never know if big bands will ever come back. So whatever, I guess I'm a dick for wanting to have some lasting memories.
memories are not saved on sd card. Your memories will be staring at small screen watching big band's concert. That sucks.

I guess I could understand his frustration for a few reasons...1. Selling videos their concerts is another way to make money and if fans are posting concerts for free, then where's the need to buying them. 2. Josh has said he doesn't particularly care to be photographed and truthfully, putting on a show is quite a way for him to display himself as it is.

Also, if there weren't any of these performances posted online, imagine how much better actually going to a live show would be. It's like looking at hundreds of pictures of the grand canyon before you see it in real life, just takes away from the value...

People complain about cellphones at concerts, which is fine. Do we need 1000 videos of live performances of Californication? No...but rarely people are lucky enough to catch things like rarely played songs and other moments that happen that are unique. So for every handful of cell phone concert videos, there's something there that you would not have been able to experience had someone not recorded it.
For me, I watched a live set of Dot Hacker recently and would not otherwise have been able to watch a live performance of them. So there's the good and the bad.
For huge bands like RHCP it is completely unnecessary to record on your phone 99.9% of the time.

I love that people try to defend themselves filming concerts as " I want to watch it later" First of all, no you don't... you're not even watching it while it's happening right in front of you. Second, that's a bullshit excuse bc the only reason you're filming is to post the shit to snapchat or instagram etc. to try to convince people that you're an interesting person.

I don't go to concerts because I don't think its enjoyable to watch while everyone is filming. I would love to have a bunch of festivals where filming with mobiles or in general is simply banned, so people can just enjoy the moment. It's not only a problem at concerts, but it just shows the most there. People stop hacing a great time just to prove to others that they had a great time. Makes no sense..

Josh is bad ass. The balls on him to every now and then break away to remind folks how they should behave. Even when in the middle of a show. Sometimes you gotta seriously get real with folks.
I know some folks would take that as disappointment. "Stop that shit and just play the guitar you rich asshole!"

Anyways it's not a big deal. As a matter of fact... It's actually pretty awesome. Imagine being a person who was at this concert when this happened? Quite a story to tell lol. I always dig it when kool or krazy shit happens at a concert. Like some pukes everywhere... Some one falls off the stage... Some one gets told to chill out or whatever... Rock history!

Stupidity of the people, yes. A gig happening in front of them in a large stage and people using phones to watch to a very small screen only to post that online later (even though there's tons of professional videos to all sorts of songs).

I live in New York, i saw RHCP this past Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Keep in mind I am also a fellow musician (guitarist, piano, saxophone, vocals), and upon learning about this I am appalled. Who the hell says you can't enjoy the concert while filming? Because, I sure did and you damn right I recorded the songs I loved the most or the solos. As a musician, you want to LEARN from the musicians you idolize so for me (WHILE ENJOYING THE CONCERT), I filmed what I felt I can take home to study on my guitar at a later time. We have the technology why not use it, plus I want the memory of being there and sharing with my chlidren one day if I ever get so lucky to have them. Major networks record them, why can't us paying customers (FANS) that give them the monetary means (ticket sales, merchanidse, record sales, etc) to make playing music a lucrative career for them record their songs? End of the day, perhaps it's better off Josh pulled out his phone during the solo because one thing I'll make perfectly clear; RHCP was great when I saw them, but there is a clear absense in the band without Frusciantes presence. Josh's solos were mediocre at best and his vocals downright terrible. His presence (the guitar tone and weak vocals) which Frusciante excelled at, are barely heard by Josh. I respect, Josh as a talented musician, but his behavior on this was pathetic like he thinks he's god. When he is as good (and he never will be) as Vaughn, Frusciante, Clapton, Page, then maybe....MAYBE, he can be allowed the right to do that mickey mouse bullshit!

He asked Ian (his guitar tech) for the phone. Ian gave it to him and Josh put on his pocket then laid it on the ground. There are some parts in the video where you can see it. :)

I think it's really stupid to film the whole show, I usually film little parts of songs in concerts. Still I think people should be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want in concerts. It's like, they paid a shit load of money just to see those people play, so I don't think bands have right to complain about filming in their concerts
yeah man, cause if i pay a financial advisor up front to discuss ways i can increase my income, when i show up to his office i better be aloud to film what he says and do what ever i want in his office. Is he allowed to complain or be offended by my actions. NO because i payed him up front.
