A really thoughtful and fortunately for me you have validated where I would like to be next. I work in Tech at PwC in London and the firm fortunately lets me do all sorts of activities in outreach and social mobility, this I really enjoy. Also I facilitated on a leadership programme for our senior associates which I really enjoyed and this was were I ran by our L&D people. So my next step is to do that. It only took you 6 years, rather than 35 years!!

I've been doing recruitment for the past 8 years and have been wanting to runaway from recruitment for a while now. You're right about the importance of perspective in terms of running away vs running towards. I realized recently that I needed to work towards what I want to do next (Learning & Development) and am taking time to get certs and take courses to build some foundation. I'm inspired to see someone else from recruitment moving to L&D and am really hoping things work out for me! I'm glad I saw this video!

I think it definitely depends on what you’re looking for. Big companies do not always mean the best fit for everyone although it seems tempting due to the “prestige” (I myself moved into a smaller company now and loving it). I think before anything, I would focus heavily on my number one tip in the video which is the first do a hard self reflection before applying blindly to every cool opportunity, it will save you much confusion down the road like I experienced 😅
Thank you for these tips. Along the way I have never been able to secure a career mentor. If anything I aligned myself with those that I wanted to learn from and that I already knew they were an ally. But you made a great point, if the environment your in is at least good enough to cultivate more learning then that is a plus. Sadly, mine does not. I was even verbally informed that transitioning to anything else is just not gonna happen. Honestly, I feel like my brain cells are evaporating on the daily! I learn on my own but it's difficult when you ask for projects and to be involved and your constantly being ignored and pigeonholed. Even had an interview a couple of weeks ago and the recruiter was shocked at how much I learned on my own and saddened by how I have never had the opportunity to showcase more in a tech business setting. This just shows me I have to find the right place at the right time with the right opportunity.
Well for one even getting to the point of recognizing this as well as continuously learning in your current environment is so impressive, you sound amazing at what you do. I feel that mentors and allies are not always necessary but can significantly help you; I hope you can find the support you need and move to an environment where your ambition and skills are celebrated.

Not at all! I know, it’s a bit weird right 😂 I think in a education / training setting, I know what to expect and am in control, so perhaps that’s why more comfortable? The unpredictability of talking to strangers is for me worse personally lol
I am a recruiter wanting to turn into an L&D professional. I have done a lot of stand up training in my Recruiting/HR roles, but nothing focused. What advise would you give to help showing my value to the Hiring Manager? My areas that are lite would be initial assessment. I think I have a very good handle on the coordination, delivery and follow up.
As someone who used to be in recruiting pivoting to L&D, you definitely have many transferable skills! Some of which are: project management, stakeholder management, and process improvement. I would definitely think of ways you have taken a challenge and how you analyzed the problem based on data, improved the outcome. It depends on which area of L&D you are interested in, but many roles require the skills I mentioned. If you have led a training class or program end to end, that definitely helps too. I’ll make a video soon to talk more in depth about the field :)
Great video! I changed my career after 16 years n civil engineering and renewable energy. I joined IT in September 2021 as Associate Manager Engineering, now I am just Manager Engineering :) I did a lot of online learning and certification to show I have knowledge and transferable, tangible skills from my previous jobs and now here I am at 37 years young starting this new tech career! I do struggle a bit if I want to be a manager or actually a great independent contributor (which I have done before with great success), but I am slowly beginning to realize that I am good at being manager too and get good feedback that people really like to work with me - everything is still new so the longer I will be here the more I will know what I want from it. However, I go to Women in Tech summit, and listen to other successful women in tech for inspiration and guidance. Surrounding myself with the right people also helps! Nevertheless, it is possible if you a) really want it b) plan for it and c) just go for it and try!
That’s amazing to hear and congrats on your career change! It takes a lot of effort and time to do it as well as self reflection but you did it. I hope you feel proud of yourself and know it’s never too late to do more of what makes you happy 😊

Actually I met someone (from US) through youtube (she has a Yt channel) and we became friends and looks like we both are going now a very similar career paths after doing something else for several years. Chatting with someone like that is very motivational and we push each other as well :) Even though I am still new in this field, I feel calm and confident because of the people I work with - who take time and effort to help me get into this world! :)

Do you do coaching? I want to figure out how to work in Japan as an American (who has lived there before)
