Video interview with bassist Marco Hietala from the Finnish metal band Nightwish. FaceCulture spoke with Marco about balancing music against personal life, his side projects, being a family man, the pitholes of a career in music, remaining inspired, not catering to the rules of the mainstream, the hassle of the Imaginaerum movie, co-writing songs, the album theme, being a science freak, fantasy, the single Elan, living life to the fullest, his backing vocals, the band and the songs as a priority, the energy of a new singer in the creative process of making an album, giving each other a boost as singers, drummer Jukka Nevalainen having to pull back from the recording and challenging himself and a lot more! I just love the fact that he looks pretty intimidating but as a matter of fact he happens to be really humble and sweet... such a great and accessible person...and of course an awesome musician as well!

I love how at the beginning the interviewer made a mistake and stutted a little, but Marco just laughed it off and said "it's alright, go ahead", he kept his patience and was so nice about it, I'm sure that a lot of pop artists might have been a little rude or acted a little impatient.
Marco is so sympathetic! I love his persona.

Just started listening to Nightwish, and I'm finding the music and band members to be fascinating!
Great music, isn't it? I started listening to them a couple of years ago but can't seem to get enough of them.

Please, don't judge the interviewers because people are not speaking fluent English in all parts of the world. It's just incomprehensible that I wrote this, but I did.
I'm Dutch as well and although the questions are okay, the spoken language is not. When you're a driver (like me) you have to know how to drive and so on. When you're an interviewer and you have to interview people in English, you have to be fluent or at least adequate in English. There's plenty of people in Holland who are.
Better than asking really generic and disinterested questions like other interviewers.
I can't imagine living in Europe and having to use English as a common language all over the place just because England and America are so dominant in Western culture. Like, I took 4 years of German 10 years ago and can barely remember enough to hold the most basic of conversations, but I get to cheat because _every single German person I would ever encounter speaks my first language better than I speak theirs._ XD
@@sic3b That's awesome but this really wasn't that bad. I don't understand a word of Dutch and only speak English but I understood her just fine. The interviewer has a very thick accent but I think the Dutch accent sounds beautiful so I like listening to it. I think I get what you're saying though
I enjoy the effort that goes into a conversation with people with different languages, and translate in their heads into English to converse. I admire their ability. I only wish I had it.

When you hear such very Vibrant music as Nightwish, the word "mainstream" is not even on the Map.

that 3-seconds pause from 0.19 to 0.22 seemed like an eternity, especially in an interview.
Has anyone read his Biography? That look he gave just before answering "I'm good thank you..." Way... way more stuff behind that one look than you could even fathom...

This book probably, I think OP is referring to his battle with depression and alcoholism when his dad died, and maybe also his divorce in 2016

Real vikings were not as nice as Marko.
I think it's not so much that the interviewer was inept, but rather not familiar with English as much as the bandmembers were, so this interview was a struggle for her.
He said something at 3:30 that triggered a very interesting topic for parents, I wish I knew what to look for when my Son started experimenting with mind-altering substances. What should I have done to have prevented my child from turning to MAS? (Mind-Altering Substances) I do blame myself and not the music he was listening to at the time despite my complaining bitterly. Thank you Marco for your interview given as a parent and not just a musician.
Well it is your fault so you should blame yourself! Never blame music or musicians for your shitty parenting!

I do wonder if this is the first time this woman has ever interviewed anyone. Seriously, even if you're not an experienced interviewer, at least repeat the questions to yourself a few times before the interview, so you don't sound awkward as shit.

It's not that the interviewer's English sucks a little bit. It's that she's simply and completely unprepared for this particular task.

Look, you can't give the interviewer a pass for "English not first language." GET an interviewer who is comfortable in English. It IS the international language, after all. Marco is just awesome, but this lady just couldn't get the job done.
You're right. I'm Dutch just like the interviewer and this is just shameful to watch. I saw her do an interview with Floor as well and that was just as bad.

When she asked "what is this song about?" I was like... "you need to ask?!?! :D"
Quite obvious (and I'm sure the interviewer isn't clueless, it's just an interview question).
Yeah, you need to ask even obvious things in interviews but just couldn't help myself thinking: "I wonder to how many the meanings of even most obvious lyrics just go right past their heads..."

@@FaceCulture Don't listen to the negative comments. The interviewer is just as human as the rest of us, nervous but that's ok. I know I would be if I was sat in front of Marco. I don't understand why people say they should have got someone who ''had better English.'' The interviewer had a very heavy Dutch accent but still spoke well enough and I didn't have to struggle to understand and I am English. I thought they sounded really eager and sweet
