Holy shit balls of Fire!!! I won tickets off the radio to see him live in Birmingham, Alabama in 2009 and he opened with this song. I’d been a fan, I had his Continuum CD and I liked his music. What an awakening I had when I saw him perform LIVE!!! I had NO idea what a fantastic guitar player he is.... I must have been living under a freaking rock lol. This video doesn’t even come close to showcasing his raw talent. If you ever get a chance to see him perform live, jump on it and I promise you will not be disappointed!!!

It's John's guitar playing. The guitar is a Jeff Beck signature Strat which is setup for tuning stability when using the tremolo arm. the riff is two chords plucked, and then three smacks to the tremolo arm to give that almost drainpipe-like sound - you're hearing the reverberation of those whacks through the metal of the bridge and strings. Then delay is added to the whole thing to repeat the sound, and reverb to make it sound like it's in a big open space, but the quality of the sound itself isn't from crazy effects, you could get it pretty close with no effects at all.
