Tuning it is actually not that hard, use a si/efi intake manifold anf throttle body, bolt up a supercharger and throw a nice catburator on top of that. As long as the carb can supply enough fuel for the boost you are OK.

Tail lights and the light bar in-between them on the later ones cant easily be swapped because the boot lid is different shape too. Water in the trunk is likely rubbish in the tubes from the sunroof. If you swap a b20a or b21 head onto a b20a3 you will gain almost 40 horsepower and can keep the fuel injection but you also need the pk2 ecu from the si model and the wiring harness for the b21 or b20a
I have an 89 prelude 2L- SI, and I LOVE to drive it. Hate to work on it, because I don’t have tiny little HANDS! But it IS reliable. Take it from me, take it to an alignment shop!! Changing out the upper & lower ball joints, control arm bushings, inner & putter tie rods and drive axles was a big PAIN in my ass!! The axles pass thru the damper fork, and must be separated. I had to cut the bolt off, pound out the two studs, get my “blue wrench” and melt the rubber bushings, cut a groove inside and hammer out the steel sleeve with a cold chisel. My 20 ton shop press was able to press in the new ones, but would NOT press out the old ones! They have been in there for 31 years!
Having a 89 prelude as well. My trunk leaks too with very bad rust. Honestly I don't think you can get around it with these cars they're all gonna have it
on my 1989 prelude, I made a custom intake and put a Ford 2bbl carburetor on it. This got rid of basically every vacuum line except the ones required to run my brakes and steering systems. The throttle response has gone down but this new design is so much more efficient than the stock dual carbs.
@@ConnorLee It was pretty difficult. I had the make the intake out of 1/8" 6061 aluminum because any other metal couldn't handle the heat of the motor. Aluminum is a very hard metal to weld/work with. Also angling was somewhat difficult because the motor is slanted back at 18° plus there isn't a lot it space to being with. It's a tight fit but it works. Aside from that, it was pretty standard. Making the runners and mounting bracket was straight forward. Also the Carb I chose to run is an autolite 2100 in case you were wondering
I also using this type of prelude(3rd Gen)...Actually,when we drove this car on the road, all people in surrounding us will watching this car..maybe they like this prelude too...
You can't really do much more with fuel injected motor(b20a5), it's not really worth it to put vtec or a tubro on it, i think its just better to go for a k20 of h22 and turbo that if u want to make it faster
@@ConnorLee k20 with turbo and the right internals. beefed up fuel rail and injectors. pump. and run e85. the skys the limit as long as your tuner is good.
A good idea would be installing 2 double barrel twin side carb. Basically install some Weber carbs and you only need adapter plates and a synchronizer but your car your rule. Peace👌
awesome video! nice to see new content of these cars online still coming up. your motor, the b20a3 (engine code can be found on the front of the engine block next to the transmission) can be fitted with aftermarket motorcycle carburetors. the stock keihin carbs on that motor are adapted from a motorcycle that honda used to make in the 80’s. the downside to those carbs is that there are some rubber seals within those carbs that deteriorate from certain components found in modern gasoline, making the downfall of those keihins inevitable. shouldn’t be a problem for a long long time so i wouldnt worry about it. also, do not under any circumstances, break the thermowax valve on the thermostat because they are old and brittle and made of the weakest plastic on earth. it’s a critical part for that motor to idle and throttle properly. i also bought the last one in the country brand new from honda and accidentally broke it when i was installing it :( S model preludes are wired completely differently and have a different fuel system set up than fuel injected preludes. if any fuel injected motor were to be swapped into that chassis, the entire car would need to be taken apart to swap out the interior wiring, engine wiring, and fuel system as well (this includes the gas tank). a k motor would be great to have in these cars but height clearance is an issue. either the hood would need to be cut or the car be raised up higher than stock height. custom mounts and wiring would need to be made too. super expensive!! a b series or h series swap has the most aftermarket support in terms of this chassis. the sway bar from the integra is actually a C-pillar bar. aftermarket rear sway bars (23mm) can be bought from MustardCat, and they make a dramatic improvement to handling! definitely recommend buying one👍
My word that interior is so clean. I just saved a 91 Si from my friend who was letting it rot. Now It's my time machine back to highschool. Just snagged the last remaining right rear strut tower bushing in existence off ebay. Full rear calipers/pads/rotors and the fronts are on their way from RAuto. You're telling me I can throw a Turbski on this efi? It's already like driving a gokart!
Ahhh yes I gotta do brakes soon too! Never changed since I’ve owned the car! Thing weighs nothing so I guess the pads last a long time. Turbskis can happen with enough patience and research!
The mismatched ends is a problem apparently in the prelude community. I know guys who love the 4th gen fronts but despise the rears and want to replace them with the 5th gen and I know others who are vise versa
I reallly love this Honda prelude, I really want to buy one for my senior year. But I’m already 17 years old and wouldn’t be seeing one of those gems in a while.
I have a 91prelude 4ws ive been sitting on it for 6 yrs. In my garage red paint inside all black stick shift i blow out a piston on the hieway i love these cars thats why i cant part with mine the head lights are eye droping prelude life 👍
That’s clean bruh! Keep it rolling 🤙🏻 I can’t help but give a plug to the 4th gen Vtec Model 94-96, and not just talking a “4th gen swapper” h22a version. The complete Vtec package in those years is legendary for a reason, those that know, well, they know. Just try finding a clean one on the road today! 😎👍🏻
@@ConnorLee if you were talking about the timing belt you wouldn’t have said you need to check and make sure that the timing belt ain’t frayed and worn out. You can’t see the timing belt.
Yeah the trunk seal and light seals/ design was prone to leaking. Literally 99% of 3rd gens I've seen up close had issues with leaking/ rust in the trunk area. Easy fix tho but parts are getting harder to find. I've owned 3 so far, all with 4WS and all automatic. This 91' I just got has a auto tranny that actually works! It shifts so smooth it's crazy! I just mash the pedal and it downshifts then takes off like the millenial falcon in warp speed. I love the auto tbh
Yo since you have some experience, do you think changing the timing belt on a ba4 with the b20a9 is hard? On other words, could I do it with myself and some good technicians or do we need to visit honda for that?
Fyi, the sway bar is under the car and helps to control body roll. I think you had strut bar in mind, but that isn’t a strut bar either. More of a chassis stiffener in this case. Or c pillar bar. Super clean car though. And I’d be surprised if you have that car long enough to need a replacement engine.
First car after graduating college was a charcoal grey 1991 Honda Prelude 2.0SI. I panicked when a minor electrical problem stranded me and me 6 month son on the highway in Texas in 2000. Absolutely, the single biggest mistake that I ever made in my life when I traded that car in. That car was purrrrrrfect!!! I want the new Vette, however, if if got my baby back, the Vette would have to wait. You never forget your first :)
A few things. 1, I was lucky, my prelude was pretty damn rust free. Absolutely no rot. 2, yeah, good luck finding parts haha, still never found a camshaft so I had to get mine machined. 3, reliable is the opposite for the b21, the 2.1l 3rd gen engine. Worst engine ever. I still can't get it running.
@@hazelelcamino7453 91 SI is the 2.1, the B21A1. After a few years of tinkering it is decently reliable, but still not my favorite. They don’t come with fantastic engines but once they’re going they do last
I bought a 1 owner, 50k mile one of these in the mid 2000's for $350 US, they were going for nothing in New Zealand back then. It was a family friend who had owned it since new and had maintained it perfectly. It was kept in a garage it's entire life and looked brand new. Some car dealer low balled him $500 NZ for a trade in so let me have it for that. Everything was up to date, recent oil change, it didn't even need air in the tyres. I remember it had a digital instrument cluster (the revs were represented by a series of colored bars and the speedo was a digital) and an electric sun roof. It must have felt like being in KITT from Knight Rider if you bought one brand new, peak 80's.
So I’m thinking of picking up a 91 prelude, any advice or tips of anything I should look out for? Would be hella helpful Edit: Also if anyone has any websites or sources I can find OEM or decent parts for the engine like a radiator or an alternator. would be helpful.
@ hey you ever find out what was up with that hose? My 89 si leaks coolant near the intake manifold and ik I can take off the distributor but I’d really hope i don’t need to remove the intake manifold either

H22 or GSR perhaps I would say B20B with Vtec but it’s gonna be problematic if you don’t maintain the B20Vtec so maybe GSR or H series since they are already Vtec
I have an 89 si with 76k miles on it. I love it so much.

........These cars really are something special. Their official claim to fame being that they had the lowest hood on a front wheel drive production car. They love the highway ...happy to cruise at 185 kph without a hint of distress. In town, a pleasure to drive...they handle like a dream. When buying one....check behind the rear bumper as it's mounts tend to dissolve, especially in snowy parts of the globe. If they are rotten it's a relatively easy fix but if you point it out you may save a few bucks on your offer. Buy the 70 amp fuse it takes and keep it in the car. One day, when it won't start....totally dead....start your trouble shooting by switching out that fuse. The trick is ...to have it already ...and have it handy. I had two of these...I had no real issues. I had the regular motors (A1B2?)......on my last one I added a cold air intake and I "unobstructed" the exhaust.....she became a deep breather ...and the increase in power was noticeable.
I just traded a set of 16in XXR wheels and $200 bucks on top for a 1990 prelude that’s running and driving down fall is needs a new front end🙃 but I love it😊
For your trunk leak check the middle bolt on your spoiler the middle bolt on my 89 prelude was loose and was leaking water into the truck also if you take off the side trunk liner there's tubes for Chaneling water that you can clean with pipe cleaners
Notes about the SI/B20A5 -> B20A5 can be bored over and rebuilt, and you can buy remanufactured top-ends for them from summit racing, and larger pistons from honda. The B21 has a fiber mesh cylinder wall, and its my understanding you cannot simply bore them over. B20's respond well to boost, but there is no VTEC options at all. There is a member on one of the prelude forums that modified his to accept VTEC with a different head (Guy is an expert/professional). IMO Try try try to get the B20A5, they are tanks. I'm daily driving one with 225k miles on and it and it runs like a top. Also the SIs are dual overhead cam set ups and are very sweet engines. Also, download the service manual-- They are online-- Same ones that the dealership techs used, youll learn how to rebuild/fix/take-apart EVERYTHING on the car. Its saved my behind many many many times. Also youre not wrong about the simplicity of the vehicle, you can literally disassemble the entire interior with a Philips head screwdriver. But you are correct, upgrade/modification paths are very resistant/0 - But maintenance items are still available for it from many retailers (like summit/rock auto). You may cringe at the idea that these are hard to support/maintain, but you will fall in love with the car, and theres always options for them, you just may have to work a little harder at it. Get acquainted with the online prelude forums, theres dudes supporting and keeping up to date information on how to do virtually everything on the car. Love your videos on your lude, keep rocking it, If I had your car and not my SI, id do the same thing youre doing, enjoy the car, they are amazing, you don't need to go fast in these things, you just enjoy the beauty and simplicity of them-- And they still can get up and go when your foot gets heavy. Love the lude videos man, you give me many ideas for mine.
Dan G such an amazing comment to read! Thank you for that link, I’m going to read up on it now! Yes, definitely plan to simply enjoy the simplicity of it as it stands right now. It’s such a fun machine, even if it takes a bit to get to 60 mph 😁
My current 1990 2.0 Si has 325k miles and needs no oil added between changes. I had a 1989 4WS 2.0Si that made it to 350K and was pretty smokey, but I broke the timing belt at 200K and it never ran the same after getting the head rebuilt. Still, it was running decent when I sold it and using less oil than a B21A1.

How many miles is on it ?
The dual carb '89 is the car i miss the most.
that interior is superb
You're missing the clock button cover like mine too!
Always love prelude content channels. Congrats on the 3rd gen. Love it. You have a new sub. :)
The Dark Rican thank man and welcome to the fam!
So Cool how you can see what Motivated the 5th Gen Preludes Interior & Exterior Design! I have a 98 Prelude Manual. I’ve had it since 2004.
Ahh true true!
You can't really do much more with fuel injected motor(b20a5), it's not really worth it to put vtec or a tubro on it, i think its just better to go for a k20 of h22 and turbo that if u want to make it faster
Bálint Bércy k20 is where I’m leaning, with a single turbo do you know what kind of hp I’d be looking at?
@@ConnorLee k20 with turbo and the right internals. beefed up fuel rail and injectors. pump. and run e85. the skys the limit as long as your tuner is good.
A good idea would be installing 2 double barrel twin side carb. Basically install some Weber carbs and you only need adapter plates and a synchronizer but your car your rule. Peace👌
awesome video! nice to see new content of these cars online still coming up.
your motor, the b20a3 (engine code can be found on the front of the engine block next to the transmission) can be fitted with aftermarket motorcycle carburetors. the stock keihin carbs on that motor are adapted from a motorcycle that honda used to make in the 80’s.
the downside to those carbs is that there are some rubber seals within those carbs that deteriorate from certain components found in modern gasoline, making the downfall of those keihins inevitable. shouldn’t be a problem for a long long time so i wouldnt worry about it.
also, do not under any circumstances, break the thermowax valve on the thermostat because they are old and brittle and made of the weakest plastic on earth. it’s a critical part for that motor to idle and throttle properly. i also bought the last one in the country brand new from honda and accidentally broke it when i was installing it :(
S model preludes are wired completely differently and have a different fuel system set up than fuel injected preludes. if any fuel injected motor were to be swapped into that chassis, the entire car would need to be taken apart to swap out the interior wiring, engine wiring, and fuel system as well (this includes the gas tank).
a k motor would be great to have in these cars but height clearance is an issue. either the hood would need to be cut or the car be raised up higher than stock height. custom mounts and wiring would need to be made too. super expensive!! a b series or h series swap has the most aftermarket support in terms of this chassis.
the sway bar from the integra is actually a C-pillar bar. aftermarket rear sway bars (23mm) can be bought from MustardCat, and they make a dramatic improvement to handling! definitely recommend buying one👍
Alvin Alvarez thank you for taking the time to share this man, much appreciated! Happy thanksgiving 🦃
My dad had those ride back when i was just 10 yo.And now i'm 39 yo.At that time not all can afford those rides. This car is sick! (thumbs up)
Thanks brotha!
The mismatched ends is a problem apparently in the prelude community. I know guys who love the 4th gen fronts but despise the rears and want to replace them with the 5th gen and I know others who are vise versa
its a crazy world of swapping!
The 4th Gen front and 5th gen back then you have a stunner! Like a 90s Babe #britneyspears
In Australia these only came in fuel injection and twin cam head. We only got the top of the line spec cars. They were beautiful.
love the car and appreciate the information. I found a manual Prelude 1988 for 10,000 $, it had 43,000 miles but still, it's kinda too expensive
thats so expensive, they arent quite that much yet.
I reallly love this Honda prelude, I really want to buy one for my senior year. But I’m already 17 years old and wouldn’t be seeing one of those gems in a while.
Just keep your eyes out online for them, you may be surprised what you find
I have a 91prelude 4ws ive been sitting on it for 6 yrs. In my garage red paint inside all black stick shift i blow out a piston on the hieway i love these cars thats why i cant part with mine the head lights are eye droping prelude life 👍
They are the best little cars!
In finland its extremery rare to find a 3rd gen for sale, I can just image finding parts
Ahhh that’s tough!
Got my self a 91 3rd gen prelude SR, and yeah can also confirm, get allot of looks and compliments in this car 😃
its the best, simply amazing
Got a 90 si 4ws b21a1. Love it. Almost 128k miles. Exhaust fell off bout a year ago
haha who needs one anyways?
That’s clean bruh! Keep it rolling 🤙🏻 I can’t help but give a plug to the 4th gen Vtec Model 94-96, and not just talking a “4th gen swapper” h22a version. The complete Vtec package in those years is legendary for a reason, those that know, well, they know. Just try finding a clean one on the road today! 😎👍🏻
I had no idea they were notorious. The 4th gen body is growing on me more and more too
"timing belt, serpintine belt" - shows power steering and alternator v-belts
Timing is right there but it’s hidden behind a cover
"this integra rear sway bar" - points to a c pillar bar
@@ConnorLee if you were talking about the timing belt you wouldn’t have said you need to check and make sure that the timing belt ain’t frayed and worn out. You can’t see the timing belt.
@@notacoyote2790 Correct, its behind a cover
Greetings from Cairo Egypt the best days of my life is when I was driving to Honda prelude 1986 and 1987
Yeah the trunk seal and light seals/ design was prone to leaking.
My questions:
1. How long it takes to go from 0 to 100 km/h?
2. What is the max rpm
3. How much hp version is this?
4. Is the engine stock?
Never measured but probably 10-12 seconds
Max like 9k rpm
105 hp

First car after graduating college was a charcoal grey 1991 Honda Prelude 2.0SI. I panicked when a minor electrical problem stranded me and me 6 month son on the highway in Texas in 2000. Absolutely, the single biggest mistake that I ever made in my life when I traded that car in. That car was purrrrrrfect!!! I want the new Vette, however, if if got my baby back, the Vette would have to wait. You never forget your first :)
Never hahaha. 1999 VW passat for me
A few things.
OlsonAuto oof that’s a bummer man, maybe it’s best I landed with the dual carb motor
@@ConnorLee It may be slow, but its definitely going to be more reliable.
Which motor is the 1991 SI motor? Good or bad one? Looking at one currently
The automatics are awesome IMHO, problem is that people would drop the transmission after revving the engine.
I love my 5spd now but the auto was pretty great. 4th gear on the highway left something to be desired though
Had an 85 prelude si hood opened different.car was pretty quick for its age back in 2000
So I’m thinking of picking up a 91 prelude, any advice or tips of anything I should look out for? Would be hella helpful
Edit: Also if anyone has any websites or sources I can find OEM or decent parts for the engine like a radiator or an alternator. would be helpful.
Bump.... someone help this man!
If it doesnt matter to you, check what other models parts will fit into it, then go from there it will give you more options
@ hey you ever find out what was up with that hose? My 89 si leaks coolant near the intake manifold and ik I can take off the distributor but I’d really hope i don’t need to remove the intake manifold either
yo nice pfp!!
Yeah get a 4th Gen instead with h22 motor
My 89 Prelude rollled on elevated ground, leaked through the roof, and so on. Still miss the car after selling.
Haha even with the problems they are still so worth it
I just rediscovered this video I watched back when I was looking into preludes, and now I recently got a yellow 88’ Si 4WS and Im in love! And also from Massachusetts👋🏼 love your videos man👍🏼
ayyy i think Ive seen you around tbh, maybe another yellow 3g but i doubt it
love the prelude, im saving up to get one as my first car! any idea if theres aftermarket support for the styling like body kits or bumpers?
No way that's the timing belt! That's crazy!
I've always wanted the 3rd gen but never found one that was ideal for the price they were asking.
Definitely not the timing belt. I had a '91 Lude. It is inside and needs to be replaced every 60k miles, and you need a skilled mechanic to do it.
Canada here...wanted to mention...'89 Accord motor as a swap for you...2.0L fuel injected...your car lighter, same stylin...give yourself ideas for the lude... peace n love in 2021 bud, keep your chin up n eyes open...one love
Ahhh yes, I’ve heard of this swap before. I will definitely consider
remember to change you timing belt...points camera at accessory belts...lol
To be fair the timing belt is hidden behind the the alternator. No real good way of showing it.
The egr valves are not carbs
I just traded a set of 16in XXR wheels and $200 bucks on top for a 1990 prelude that’s running and driving down fall is needs a new front end🙃 but I love it😊
just bought a honda prelude 1991 with 161,000km on it. cant wait to do some mods to it
Whatchya got planned?!
For your trunk leak check the middle bolt on your spoiler the middle bolt on my 89 prelude was loose and was leaking water into the truck also if you take off the side trunk liner there's tubes for Chaneling water that you can clean with pipe cleaners
Thanks man! Ill definitely check these out
Lude is clean, k20 is the swap and easy to get everything just might be able to keep hood or cut
Gilberto Alba definitely where I’m leaning!
H22!
Very nice wheel and tire combo!
Thanks Eric!
Joe Tron woah 😶
clean build my guy i’m in love with it

:D
I miss my old 88. I would love to find one!
I had a 2001 prelude and i couldnt find anything in my area had to go look all over other countys just to find 1 part lol yeah offer up and pick a part are your best friends for these type of cars
Its a grind hahaha
Man I had one and I would again, my 88 was rusted to shit but was fast as hell
Hopefully putting the rust that is on my car to rest soon. Going to be starting on the body work here soon.
I bought a 3rd gen prelude almost a month ago and I showed some of my buddies dads and they said that they haven’t seen one of these in years

Currently looking at an si 4ws very clean car manual just runs a little rich but I have my theories on what’s wrong. This was a pretty cool video, thank you for sharing :)
Hi.
My first car was gen II and I fell in love with this cars, now I have gen III with swap engine 2.2 VTEC and 4ws it is wery nice to drive.
I found a 3rd gen prelude for 700, exterior and interior look fine, but I don't know about issues with rust or if the engine is any good. I'm gonna check it out as soon as I can and see if I can swoop it up. I'd probably engine swap it anyways
damn 700 would be a steal for even a decent condition lude! Best of luck!
@@ConnorLee I'll keep it in mind, I'll check it out as soon as I can, most of my worries come from rust so if it doesn't have that then it's fair game
@@Nico-jj8ly Good luck!
