I don't understand why most people perceive reading as boring. I personally have read a book a week for the past 3 years and it has changed my life and made me a more creative person.
Tbh it really depends - with fiction books depending on how detailed it is I can skim but non fiction is definitely one where I can’t skim bc I have to read the pages two or three times actually. Detailed fiction is a no for skimming too but tbh if the book isn’t that detailed and complex then I can skim read (I don’t do it very often) Skimming is obviously still reading but if you’re skimming a detailed book and not taking anything in then the reading sessions is not very effective
@BabyUnicornio but you're still technically reading the words when skimming - I'd say when I skim read I still read about 75% of the words on the page I just miss out words in between - you've still technically read a book even if you skimmed it if you understand the book/know the plot (most of it anyway). The literal definition is 'look at and comprehend the meaning of written or printed matter' and if you skim read a page and understand most of what is being said without needing to read it word for word, I'd still count the book, as a whole, as being read.
Usually I tend to skim through "modern" books I solely read for my own satisfaction or because of a recommendation. However, when it comes to classics or authors where I notice a peculiar / masterful writing style, I tend to read each word, sometimes even repeating certain pages to fully comprehend every sentence and most stylistic devices (for me, as a non-native speaker, Brave New World is a great example of such a novel). It‘s like the difference between truly watching certain wonderful shows or movies vs binging through each season of some mediocre ones.
for me, i skimmed through fiction books when the author is describing something or use long phrases to describe an action. For example, the author would write “He turned the doorknob. As he applied pressure on the door where it’s wood came from the finest wood cutter from Southeast Asia. The door opened” where its literally him opening the door. So yeah if the author is using long phrases to describe an action I’ll just skimmed through.
I completed agree @nonuora. reading a book isn't just about gaining knowledge, it's about the experience. it's slow at times but it makes it worth it when you absorb each word instead of rushing to get to the finish line.
2019 - Read a book or so a week. ~55 books read. 2020 - I'm at 55 books today with 4 more months. It's the best thing you can do for personal development in my opinion.
I’ve recently started to limit my time on social media and started reading more. I feel so much happier and clear-headed. It’s amazing! Nate, thank you for being an inspiration to us all. Keep up the good work! :)
What a coincidence! I started challenging myself and reading one book a week since last month. I'm a slow reader AND I used to hate reading. Well, I still do lol. But I see the benefits of it and I want to better myself and eventually be successful in life. So yeah. It's my first couple months so maybe I will start to enjoy it hopefully.
@@MagicMetalMoney you're right. It's definitely more about how you feel. most of the books I read were about psychology, self improvement and self help. They're my "easy to read" interests lol. I'm transitioning to business and finance but I don't wanna rush things and ruin the little passion for reading I built over time. Baby steps. My first goal is to be daily consistent until it feels natural to me.
Book clubs are actually great! I started a book club with my best friend and we catch up fortnightly on our latest book. It definitely helps with accountability and makes me reflect more on a book when I would otherwise just move on to the next one.
Just began reading at the start of quarantine. I think I read one book throughout high school. I’m a college freshman now and have read 10 books on the stock market since March and love it! It’s crazy how much better I learn reading compared to watching videos. It’s changed my life

Weird that I stumbled upon this today. I was driving out to the lake, and was thinking about how some of the life choices I've made career-wise, were apart of the path of least resistance. These choices have turned out well for me, but they haven't allowed me to build what I dream of building. Great video Nate, I love the spreading awareness of how important reading and learning on your own time is.
I find that the more you get into the habit of reading, the more you enjoy and the easier it gets because now it’s “you’re thing”, it’s what you do to relax. Awesome video as always :)
Agree with all your points. One that I would add is that if you’ve never been an avid reader the best way to start reading consistently is to find books on topics you’re actually interested in. Don’t read a book just because it’s a best seller, or because someone told you to read it and “it’s going to change your life.” It’s much easier to do that when you’ve built up a routine or don’t have the preconceived notion that books are a waste of your time. Also, just a reminder, you can read a lot of self-help books but if you don’t implement some of the things you’ve learnt then there won’t be any change in your life. Read a couple of chapters, try something you've learnt and then read some more. It's a lot easier when the ideas are fresh and you have motivation.
I would recommend meditating after reading the book. The best way I have realized to digest those consumed contents. Thank you for sharing your views. :)

I usually read whenever I feel that I want to read and I believe that it is best way to read a book rather than compelling oneself to finish a book within a particular period of time. In my point of view we should enjoy reading instead of creating a pressure on us and I really enjoys reading novels.🤗
I’ve finished my first book in years this month! Now reading the next one. Honestly, I’ve stopped trying to read for the sake of reading and it’s worked! I now crave reading!
Thank you Nate from Japan! I have been reading books for 15 years and I targeted to read so many books as I can. But recently I tried to the great books that I need right now and read it two or three times. Recently I have been struggling with my reading speed and making it habit again and that's why I reached to this video. I learned some critical pointes that I needed to learn. I really love your presentation with your great voice tones. Thank you Nate!
having the habit of reading is such a blessing. i’m so glad i was born in a time before everyone could afford touch screen phones. i’m so grateful my parents made me read Enid Blyton. i’m so grateful to have grown up in an environment where reading was the only source of entertainment. i wish children these days also cultivated reading.
I'm really a farm labour, and 9 of September 2019 i decided to start reading atleast 50 books per year. Then what's happened, i have 29 days and 4 books remain to achieve my goal.
I read a lot everyday but not book. I read people, their intentions, verbal messages and body language. I read between the lines, social cues and try to decode them. I read my surroundings. The world around us is an open book and I completely immerse myself in reading the true nature of reality.
Great video bro! I’ve noticed that since I stopped using social media I have definitely gotten more productive. Started doing my morning routine more, started reading more, etc. I’ve also noticed that I’ve been more happier to. In my opinion there’s nothing wrong with social media but it can be very damaging to the mind and health sometimes.
I'm working on this. I'm averaging a little over a book every two weeks this year. So long as I finish a book this week, I will be on pace for 30 books this year. Knowledge is power. I'd love to see some reviews on your favorites. 👍
I read atleast 2 hours everyday an hour on the bus on the way to work and back and then sometimes at night or on the weekend. It’s so easy to read one if not two books a week if you use that time travelling to work reading. Don’t waste the time on your phone etc. read or journal it’s so important ( Iv learnt is it anyway ).
I think for me there was also a pressure going through school to read really terrible books in a set amount of time and then analyse them which really took the enjoyment out of reading and made it feel like a chore, I find that now I am much happier reading again although there are other reasons like you mentioned so I still read a lot less than I used to
*Reading books are great* . _Although I think there's probably more value in having 3-5 books you always come back to rather than just absorbing new info every time_ 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Steven Vander Hoek Finance great question Steven. I’d say; 1) rich dad poor dad 2) 10x 3) trust me I’m lying 4) 48 laws of power 5) The richest man in Babylon What about yourself?
I definitely think that positive reinforcement is better than negative in this case. If I ‘punish’ myself for not doing something, I’ll just stop setting myself a goal. If I reward myself for meeting my goals, I’m much more likely to achieve it, and to push myself to reach bigger goals in future.
Mr.O Brien. After being treated for T.B.I due to injuries i sustained in iraq, my vocabulary with words, memory and speech have been impaired. So i decided to read as much as i can. However I do not know where my interests are for books. I feel like im am indecisive. With the book i do purchase, I find myself not connecting with the words that I read. Like if i am not focusing or I am being distracted . ( As if someone just rambles with words, i ramble with reading) as hard as i try to concentrate i find myself reading every single page at least 2-3 times before turning the page , to really grasp or take in or understand what i am reading. Not the pronounce of words but re read to understand what is taking place during that narration. Re reading 2-3 times every page has become unmotivating and exhausting. Books tend to drag out longer than they should.. have tried audible books and it has been easier to picture what is happening during the narration. I take notes as well. However i feel like a cheat. That I am not becoming more knowledgeable as someone should when they physically read . Do you recommend to keep reading physical or can one gain what you have gain with audiblebooks?
There’s nothing like picking up a physical book and feeling the pages as you flip through them. That said, lately I’ve gotten a lot more ‘reading’ through audiobooks. That’s been a game changer
Awesome video! I find that combining reading and listening is the way to go for me too. A lot of times the audio book versions of the book will have exclusive content from the author. Also hearing it from their own mouth literally can be super powerful sometimes. Having that accountability is huge too. I did that where both my cousin and I were reading through a book together and it helped us both grow talking more about it outside of our other reading. Yeah reading a lot is definitely a great skill to have. I've dropped a number of books and I've been doing it more lately. Reading helps you in your writing too. And yep Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books were super bomb.
I'm no longer big on reading books but taking massive action and execution. If I need more info due to a roadblock, only then I'd grab a book and read it. I believe in this now: "self-improvement can only take you so far, self-destruction however, can take you everywhere. Learn less, do more". Just my 2 cents basically after 3 years of being in the game. Doesn't mean to screw the books, just take more action and execute.
I love audiobooks! They really motivate me to do things that I oftentimes find boring, like loading the dishwasher or cooking or running or commuting. Now, I feel excited to get those breaks because it's my get-to-read-my-book time. :)
@@bigfoot.4451 they're not a source of knowledge to you but they could well be a source of inspiration for someone working on some kind of drawing or comic skills
The title of this video is a bit misleading. It should be something like “how to get the most out of reading” something along those lines. Great video though!
Completely agree with you about fully reading (word for word) those books you choose to read, and also being willing to set a book aside if it doesn't 'grab' you.
I don't do that a lot but apparently reading novels before going to sleep instead of more demanding books stimulates imagination and works as a primer for your dreams.

I read every word, too. Skimming is not reading. It’s skimming.
Books are my comfort. Sci-fi, drama, history and self improvement. I love books 😍💞
2019 - Read a book or so a week. ~55 books read.
2020 - I'm at 55 books today with 4 more months.
It's the best thing you can do for personal development in my opinion.

More important than reading a book per week or per month is to really take time to think about it, and put it into practice!
Loving these new videos bro!

I just met your channel and i'm loving it. I got here to improve my english with a native speaker. I'm so thankful that youtube recommended you
I'm going to read a book now.
Ha ha, right?
OU really??
I'm not a native English and I'm improving my English and my knowledge as well by reading English books

I’m taking baby steps by reading a book a month myself but I hope to get to your pace soon Nate! Great vid!

ive been reading a book a week for four years, that changed my life
I find that the more you get into the habit of reading, the more you enjoy and the easier it gets because now it’s “you’re thing”, it’s what you do to relax. Awesome video as always :)
It becomes you are thing* ?? Whatt
Think and Grow rich is one of my favorite books!
One of the best books around! Such a timeless book with such valuable advice about success.

Reading opens us up to new ideas, thoughts and concepts. Without books, we wouldnt be as smart or creative
I usually read whenever I feel that I want to read and I believe that it is best way to read a book rather than compelling oneself to finish a book within a particular period of time.
In my point of view we should enjoy reading instead of creating a pressure on us and I really enjoys reading novels.🤗

What about yourself?
Who likes to read books? Good video and to retain information! 👍🙌😍
'The average american reads 1 book a year. The TOP CEO's read 4 books a month, 50 books a year. IF you wanna get in the game. READ!'
Reading 30-60 mins first thing in the morning and 30-60 mins before bed has been great for my productivity and sleep quality, respectively.
Man you inspired me to wake up at 5 am everyday now too read books
I'm no longer big on reading books but taking massive action and execution. If I need more info due to a roadblock, only then I'd grab a book and read it.
I believe in this now: "self-improvement can only take you so far, self-destruction however, can take you everywhere. Learn less, do more".
Just my 2 cents basically after 3 years of being in the game. Doesn't mean to screw the books, just take more action and execute.

Completely agree with you about fully reading (word for word) those books you choose to read, and also being willing to set a book aside if it doesn't 'grab' you.
I don't do that a lot but apparently reading novels before going to sleep instead of more demanding books stimulates imagination and works as a primer for your dreams.
