A question which seems to "pop up" every so often is "how did Fred Astaire make the cane rise up from the floor". Astaire wrote in his autobiography that the cane was shot off the floor with compressed air. I read somewhere that the air was forced out through holes in the floor. As you can see when video is paused at 1:46. A dark vertical substance can be seen shooting out from the floor which sends the cane zooming upwards.
Thanks for ruining this for me. What next? Are you going to ruin the FUN and MAGIC of Astaire's ceiling dance? EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO USE SEARCH ENGINES!!! You could have at least said ***SPOILER ALERT*** before ruining the fun and magic that Astaire was. I am the nicest person you will ever meet, and am all about tolerance and acceptance, but shame on you. Your haste just ruined one of my favorite videos. You coukd learn a lesson on how to respect the fact that not everyone isn't looking for a genius to explain the world (in my opinion), and they enjoy mystery. I have said my piece. Good luck to you, and I hope you enjoy the remainder of your days, and let them be filled with happiness. Peace. ✌

I see Astaire's foot work in MJ. I found this video after watching MJ debut the Moonwalk. During that performance I kind of recognized the footwork a little bit. No, I'm not a dancer, I'm 55 and when I was a kid in the early 70's my Mom would watch any movie with Fred Astaire, usually with Ginger, So I recognize those feet.
I think Fred Astaire would have loved this........ he did not take himself too seriously. By putting modern music to it, you don't see this as a dated piece of footwork, you can admire the timeless skill and great humour he put into his routines
I think he’d look for a million ways to make it better. Astaire was a perfectionist who felt he never got it just the way he wanted. But more like it just being close enough. You can see the results though.
