I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the one and only, John McDougall M.D. founder of the Starch Solution and 12-Day Program on the topic of dietary fats.
Hear Dr. McDougall discuss the dangers of medical professionals with financial agendas, the difference between essential vs non-essential fats, and the high-fat lifestyle myth.

After reversing diabetes and many other chronic diseases 10 years ago following a WFPB diet low in fat, I recently visited a new doctor for primary care. After I shared my diet with him, he told me I NEED to at least add fatty fish to my diet, and cut out the "carbs", as they are 9 calories per gram compared to 4 for fats!! I said I beg to differ but carbs are 4 calories per gram, it is FATS that are 9. He snickered and said "nonsense, I can show you!" His arrogance and attitude were offensive, and I guess I reacted in kind by telling him, "I've been eating this way quite successfully for a long time, I'm not ignorant, but... I suggest you DO look it up anyway so you can say the same". Needless to say I won't be going back!

I’ve lost 45 lbs and my friends are amazed! I’m amazed. I tell them it’s all WFPB eating but I still have friends going on the Keto diet which breaks my heart. I tell them it will take weight off but isn’t sustainable or healthy. I’m not sure how else I can convince them not to go on Keto. But one thing is sure they all tell me carbs are bad and I agree with them unless you count fresh carbs because they are what’s going to take the weight off. I used to pull my hair out trying to convince them, now I’m just sad for them.

I did a one week sweet potato only diet about 5 years ago. It was easy. Added one fruit or vegetable every week so it was like a reward. No more meat and dairy. Lost about 100 lbs after the first year. Now only WFPB food.

Excellent, Tom! I started about 5 years ago, also. Now, I have times where I want to gain a little more weight and I add bread and some nuts and seeds for awhile. Then, times I need to lose and I have a strategy for that. It's not big swings in weight, though. I'm healthy.

And have yet to lose a few more. But it's been great. I sleep well at night, I have energy that lasts all day. Keep doing the good work you are doing. The world needs this message.

I agree to a point you don't want to eat lots of foods that have tons of fat, but I also think that fat is good for a lot of parts of your body including your skin. Dr McDougall is 75 years old. My dad is 91 years old and looks younger than Dr mcdougal. My mother passed away at almost 94 and she looked younger than Dr mcdougall. So I will continue to use my oils minimally. I am 60 and when I tell people that they seriously have the look of shock on their face and think I'm in my early 40s.

What he is pointing out is that we get all the fats we need in the plant foods and we get enough EFA’s if we eat enough .
Chef AJ has talked about her bloodwork before and how she has been not eating any overt fats for years and her EFA’s omega 3s are perfect, not low in her lab work .

Dr. McDougall has always been so nice and responsive to me. In email he even called me a star McDougaller! And one of the things I feel most strongly about is absolutely no added oils and fats. I actually don’t run into many people who tried to tell me that I need fats. I run into people who still tell me I need more protein, believe it or not, but it’s pretty easy to convince people that added fats are just not healthy for you. And certainly not good if you’re obese.

Great video and great doctor; I am on his program going on 6 years now. Weight control is for me now on the program is not impossible for learn term like the standard diet was for me previously.
I can gain significant weight still if I don't watch it but I never let it get over 150 for long as my waist-to-height ratio gets too high for my taste; that ratio is an excellent predictor of health problems and there's an increased risk over 0.5. If a person is 6 feet (72 inches) tall then a waist above 36 inches is a problem. If I gain muscle weight then sure, my highest acceptable weight will end up being above 150 but that's not happening any time soon.

I don't have diet I am not vegan but I just eat whole food mostly low in fat and it works even if you are not vegan. From "fatty" food I eat only seeds/nuts/avocado/fatty fish but once or twice a week or so. I don't want to be super slim just be healthy and have normal weight with muscles. I think animal products without saturated fat/minimal amounts like fat free yogurt and lean meat/fish is good. Protein is the most filling group of food actually and if someone is working out higher protein is required to maintain muscles. So I eat like 15% of protein (sometimes maybe even above 20% I am not sure), 60%-75% carbs rest is fat. Even oatmeal has actually fat so it is hard eat 10% of fat or less. But it all comes down to calories unfortunately. I had to cut carbs too (I ate too much bread with jam) to actually lose weight. You can gain weight even on low fat diet if you overconsume calories and don't move. I try eating most filling foods according to science like potatoes/fish/beans/yogurt/oatmeal and it really makes a difference. Processed food is the worst you are always hungry eating crap and worse you can't stop eating so I don't buy process food more than once, twice a month. Cheese is the worst of all foods probably, very addictive and you want to eat more. I could eat whole pizza and still want to eat more, cheese is a danger.

The one that gets me, though, is Dr. Gregor. He doesn't sell supplements but insists we need a little seeds and nuts everyday. He does recommend a small amount, so it's a bit of "majoring in minor things", but I think I need to do as Chef AJ did and give up all fats to achieve the results I need, but it's Gregor's recommendation that holds me up a bit ...

the lignans in flax are indeed very potent, and you only "need" maybe a teaspoon of seeds to gain any benefits from the phytochemicals they contain. very VERY little is needed.

Dr Greger is correct. As is Dr. Fuhrman. Even Dr. Ornish has come around. Nuts and seeds, particularly a small amount of flax seeds are crucial to health. If I had a problem resisting eating a lot of fat, I'd at least stick to a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds a day. They don't taste good enough to overdo them.

    • @DougLerner
      @DougLerner Год назад +1

I don’t do nuts at all. They are way too many calories, and they definitely hurt my weight loss. But I do add 1 teaspoon of ground flaxseed to my healthy salads three times a day. That’s one level tablespoon a day. And I believe Chef AJ does that as well. That’s different from something like a fat supplement.

I agree on the fat. I tried healthy keto and gained quite a bit… but also starch is problematic for me now too. If I start eating sweet potatoes I just stay hungry. I’ll eat too many and gain. Raw vegan or high raw is where it’s at for me both to reduce inflammation from autoimmune and to drop weight. I eat avocado but do not overdo it. I feel so much better raw.

I like a little fat. It vastly improves the taste of veggies and to my understanding helps with the absorption of nutrients. Good for the skin once you're over the age of 16 when dryness becomes a problem. On the other hand, I've tries a high fat, keto type diet, and it's the worst diet ever. Even worse than plain old junk food. Yuck! Never again.
