  • In this episode of Life on Skid Row, we take a closer look at the life of Brenda, a disabled mother who has been through a rollercoaster of hardships. Originally from Texas, Brenda's journey has taken her from New Jersey to Sacramento, where her life and family fell apart due to her and her children's father's substance abuse disorders. Despite losing her three young children to child protective services, Brenda has been determined to regain her life. Still, sadly, it's nearly impossible while on the streets in Los Angeles's Skid Row. Real or imagined, Brenda holds onto the dream of reuniting with her children.
Over the years, Brenda has struggled with drug addiction, going in and out of treatment facilities with varying levels of success. Without a stable place to call home, she's been living on the streets, couch surfing with friends, and relying on public transportation to survive. But even with all these challenges, Brenda remains determined to overcome her addiction and find both a drug treatment program and permanent housing.
We'll hear Brenda's story as she shares her experiences of living on Skid Row, Los Angeles, and her ongoing search for her family. This is a heartbreaking story of one woman's resilience and determination to turn her life around despite overwhelming odds and how people need a purpose to hold onto.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

When those two guys walked by and ignored her while hanging their heads low shows the society we live in. Even if I don't have it I'll still acknowledge a person and tell them I don't have anything. I rarely have physical money on me but when I do it mostly goes towards the homeless. Most people seem to judge the homeless population on what they spend their money on but in reality people who aren't homeless buy alcohol, they buy drugs, and they buy fast food. So what difference does it make?

  • @lc2962

Why won’t our country do something about this?! Wouldn’t it be better for society if this woman had a safe apartment to live in? What has happened to our humanity? How is this ok? To actually become accustomed to this is unbelievable. And yes, i know homelessness is not new. But the breadth of it is new. And a society worth its salt wouldn’t allow this travesty on such is a grand scale.

Until then, I pray and hope for the best for them and for them to have a long and fulfilled life where they will be able to overcome their troublesome issues and that governments will enact better policies to support them and to get them out of homelessness and give them a stable home, food, water and everything they need. Plenty of lower middle class people in the 20th century busted their tails so their own kids could attain an upper middle class or higher lifestyle. My own family being one example. None were “born wealthy”. However, where I do agree is our horrible way we deal with the mentally ill and our modern “debt slavery” system.

If you want to fix homelessness the liens on the federal income tax returns have to be lifted that have been unjustifiable a placed by the child support system if this is done you will see a decrease in homelessness and a boost in the economy for job creation US Financial law states you are not allowed to touch someone's federal income tax returns that are below the poverty level there is a direct link between the loss of the federal income tax returns and homelessness

Limit the amount of property one landlord can own. Reclassify it so that more rules apply to it than a barrel of oil or block of gold. Remove the speculators and accept the property price crash that follows. Then we begin again.

That’s true. It’s not really a “however” though. It really is that simple. I say this having made horrible choices. It’s not a judgment. I’m just saying, she’s accountable for her decisions and others can learn from these tragic stories.
If she chose drugs over her children, she’s not a victim but her kids are. The real tragedy is found in those who didn’t have a choice - who were subject to neglect and abuse and trauma.
