I love Cate but found this film very dark and disturbing, as if I were on another planet.
I just sat in the dark theater for several minutes afterward, wondering "What WAS that?"
Of course Blanchett is a master at her craft and as usual, totally believable in her character.
I can only imagine being her Lover in the film...intense to live with, impossible to resist.

I've seen Tár 24 times at the cinema, and although the movie left theatres in my country 3 weeks ago, I'm still processing what I witnessed. Not only is beautiful and deep, but really life-changing, as it leaves you with so many questions regarding your own self when it comes to identity, life, mortality and so much more. I've followed Cate's career since Paradise Road, and though she's always great, in my opinion, Lydia Tár is in a league of her own. What a mind-blowing performance! One for the ages...

I loved this film for Blanchett's performance and the depth they went with its subject matter even adding esoteric things like the mention of Edgard Varèse in the Julliard classroom scene. There were things that a lot of viewers would not understand who are not well acquainted with Classical Music and composers, so those folks may not enjoy it as much as I did. The conducting by Blanchett looked good, maybe a bit over stated, but she pretty much got it right. I liked the short, ephemeral scenes which added more depth to the film. Cate Blanchett is one of my favorite actresses and she is great in all of the films I have seen her in. One of her best performances was in the Jim Jarmusch film "Coffee and Cigarettes" (2003) which is a film made up of 11 short vignettes. Blanchett played two roles simultaneously in one vignette. She plays herself and meets up with her twin sister Shelly (also played her) who is envious of her sister's success and fame. It's short but sweet.

Blah, blah, blah. I've been a big classical music buff...especially Mahler...for more than 50 years. But I have no interest in watching this overly-long movie. Cate Blanchett is apparently brilliant in portraying an out-of-control female conductor actually becoming violent. I'm sure she's brilliant in the role. But there are far more important things going on in the world than this overblown psycho-drama. Portraying a woman of power in an unsympathetic role...especially when there have been many so male conductors of the past, and much more recently, who were abusive...there is nothing in this that interests me. I have better things to do with my time. Many others may feel the same. It certainly does nothing to advance the apparently diminishing interest in classical music.

She is a great actress. This movie however was boring as hell. She was a predator, and it took her down. Not really all that interesting or surprising. I don't know what the point of this movie was, not at all. There were no other characters developed, just Tar. Very uninteresting movie.

On first view this film created more questions than answers. I had to watch several times to pick up on some of the answers. I believe the general point of the movie was how power corrupts regardless of gender and the internal hierarchy of an orchestra politics. A question remains must you separate the artist from the art? Ex: “Placido Domingo” used same hotel room was mentioned.
Some of the story was lost in editing such as her childhood as “Linda” Tar born to deaf parents in a less prestigious area. I agree it was dark but still how & what Cate trained to bring her character to life was incredible. Hope this explained a little. Just my opinion. 😊
