@@xano2921 it is a union, if any countries think their benefits they got from being in the union is less than what they sacrificed, they will leave. But I get your point, it's the likely the closest countries ever were in an NGOs.
So frustrated that I'm just now finding out any this hearing, as well as how poorly prepared the US congress was in addressing these very real questions
Well it dissolved into a mess (0.32) ... Watching the entire hearing I would say this was caused by Zuckerberg not answering questions rather than the structure of the hearing.
Not only that, Facebook was only allowed to buy WhatsApp if they would not link user's Facebook profile to their WhatsApp profile. They did so anyway. He was asked in this hearing when he'd decouple the two again, and comply with the law, but I don't think he answered.
Then don't use facebook. I don't care for Facebook and I don't support it, but I see where Zuckerberg is coming from. Facebook is huge, but ultimately it's just an app on your phone and a website for you to communicate with friends/family. There are plenty of options out there that aren't facebook. I mostly use google hangouts for most chat. I also use Line and Kakao talk when I'm in Japan and Korea, respectively ( Facebook is actually rarely used in those places anymore and being there shows you how easily and quickly facebook can become non-relevant). I use Linkedin(microsoft) for professional contacts and gmail(google again) for all email. As for online 'communities' I would say youtube(Google again) would fall into that category as a competitor. I use Google Drive/photos and Flickr for photobackup and sharing. This is the nature of the competitive landscape and why I emphasize Facebook is ultimately just an app and website. A new alternative or existing alternative can become popular overnight and all it takes is someone to download that from their appstore and click delete on their facebook app and within a year you could see facebook become another Myspace - That's the kind of fear Zuckerburg has and what he is talking about when he mentions the competitive landscape. You might say Facebook is massive and has huge revenue/profits, but these are all contingent on one thing - people using facebook regularly. Google plus was a failure, but it easily could have not been one and that's the kind of situation that he has to be ready for. It doesn't even have to be from a large competitor - this generation is not loyal to companies and if something more interesting comes along they will quickly ditch their old app for a new one. If you have governments breaking up facebook you're only enabling google and microsoft to have less competition. Overall, this is worse for the market.
Wow! Even though the format was imperfect, I am glad that the EU did a better job at asking questions and it seems way more serious about regulating Facebook. #EUvsFB
The EU is more serious on *all* matters. They've been established longer than the United States. Every country in the EU has precious culture to lose if there were ever another World War. America has some culture, but not so rich. America also feels safe 100% of the time. Our Congressmen aren't worried about anything because there are two oceans separating us from all of the world's problems. The EU just isn't like that.
The European parlaiment have enough questions to answer of their own like.......how do they justify their clique of unelected politicians that cannot be removed by the peoples voting power, making rules, regulations and laws that are imposed on other democracies. Can they answer the question of how we were all originally blatantly lied to in order to take the UK and other countries into the Common Market which was meant for trading between nations and then led into a European Union that has spent the last 40 + years stripping democratic nations of the right to govern themselves. No country has ever had a vote on this theivery and when they have the EU has made them vote again until they got the right answer. Answer these questions. The EU are control freaks and the only reason that they are giving Zuckerberg a hard time is they can't control, or regulate him as they have done to the rest of Europe. Glad the UK is out of the mess that is the EU..
@@racl1954 Ok Brexit guy. If you don't like the EU you can live (as shown by the Brexit), and I don't know what you mean by controlling democracies. It's like a club. If you want to be part of this club then you have to follow this rules: this, this and this. And when a country doesn't follow they control that infraction by convincing it that he will pay for this unruly behavior. We signed to be part of the EU. Countries are fighting just to be part of it. The things you've pointed out aren't actually that big of a deal in comparison with Germany "being able" not to follow this EU rules. But even that is understandable if you think of who has the money. I actually am pro EU and, honestly, I'm okay if people are against but I think that they're not what you've described. Pd:Anyway, pardon my lower English (I'm from Spain) and don't understand this comment as hate. I just wanted to engage in this debate but maintaining common respect while doing so. Who is the guy asking the last question featured in this video (and many others throughout the video)? He seems to be asking the toughest questions and is damn confident asking 'em.
That's Guy Verhofstadt, member of the open VLD (Belgian Dutch-speaking liberal party, centre-right), three times Prime Minister of Belgium, current chairman of the ALDE (European liberal party, centre to centre-right), European Parliament's representative on matters related to Brexit. He's also one of the biggest supporter of a federal European Union.
it is clearly regulated, that is why he has to show up here and answer questions. It is only a matter of to what extent they are going to be regulated, supervised or even control more. This testimony is a big progress for regulators to keep up with the speed of the technology revolution. Even the people in the industry could not comprehensively understand how quick it is developing. That is why the regulators are so worrying about their policies.
Then people simply need to stop giving him this power.. no one is forced to used Facebook's services and people need to realize they are the product, not the other way around. It's only "free" product in exchange for access to all your data and information. They are a publicly traded company and as such will use any mean to exploit whatever information they have access to in order to generate revenue, increase market share, and dominate their sector people seem to forget that.
@@SecularDarwinism Thank you. Did it ever occur to anyone, that people LIKE being a "product". Social media helps us keep in contact with others but most importantly it helps feed our egos. Some people put up constant "snaps" about themselves, constant videos on "insta", or statuses on twitter, just because they love the attention. But I do feel bad for those people who don't have the ego problem. They should have more privacy.

Zuckerburg is completely out of his depth and making things worse with his cold demeanor. They need a seasoned CEO to run Facebook like Google did at the start.
I don't his demeanor was intentional. I'd say internally he felt nervous and under alot of pressure given the depths of this issue that no one really has much experience with handling. The previous monopolistic companies mentioned like microsoft had the skills and expertise to see a path toward a solution and execute. I don't think it will be easy to find a balance between protecting FB users from data mining and selling while allowing for users to continue enriching the site for the purposes of communicating and connecting people worldwide.
agreed they asked great questions but what's next. The fact is this won't really change the working of facebook but they'll make emotional videos about how they have changed lol
"Are you capable to fix it?" That's the problem, the company is far too massive, and delves into too many different areas for him to really "fix it". There are always going to be seriously legitimate problems with Facebook as long as it is around.
Nice commentary and clips :). Hopefully there WILL be alternatives. It's just they will NOT be funded by Silicon Valley, Bay Area, OR California. (I should know ;) ) - Worldie will be one, I hope (still working).
Somehow the US Congress made Zuckerberg look like the teacher trying to control the classroom with a passive behaviour and the EU Parliament made Zuckerberg look like he was in a trial.
F. Teixeira Every company collects your data and nothing is ever deleted from the internet, internet is free for a reason. It's not Facebook all of them do the same, but only facebook is getting a stick for it lol.
Bruh in the US it should have had the EU format, and the EU should have had the US format of back to back The US congress members asked the wrong questions and the EU members on the other hand asked the actual legit questions.
That's because US congress knows that Facebook is very advanced and usefull tool for mass surveillence and after that cirkus behind closed doors they pat him on the back.

ghost/shadow profiles mr Zuckerberg... :-) What do you do with the users who don't have facebook? Don't want to answer that hu? I guess the answer is too ugly to tell... :-)
Americans should be shame of your parliament and joke of politics you have... just a simple example how EU Parliament approach Marl Zuckerberg, direct, precisely and clever questions and not like your politicians... Some of your "CLEVER" politicians questions... Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) . “So, how do you sustain a business model in which users don’t pay for your service?” “Senator, we run ads,” Zuckerberg responded, before breaking into a tiny smirk. “I see,” Hatch replied. “That’s great.” “I’ve got 4,900 friends on my Facebook page. I delete the haters and save room for family members and true friends on my personal page,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) told Zuckerberg. “I’m a proud member of Facebook, just got a post from my sister on this being National Sibling Day.” Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) invoked his love of chocolate. “I’m communicating with my friends on Facebook, and indicate that I love a certain kind of chocolate. And, all of a sudden, I start receiving advertisements for chocolate. What if I don’t want to receive those commercial advertisements?”
Why does Zuckerberg seem like a ROBOT? The mechanical blinking and head gestures... it's mind-boggling. Or is he just like that? Does anyone here know him personally?

Wtf he wad like that and then it was like nothing happened
No wonder we voted Trump, just look at the questions our senators asked compared to the EU parliament.
To be fair, you didn't get much of a choice.
If I were from the states, I would have voted Sanders... And accomplished nothing.
To be even more fair, the meeting only lasted 1h30, where the Senate testimony was about 6h
Jerry Peng Better Trump than Merkel
The senators dumbness aren't trumps fault.
@Nspnspker not only that...the coverage from the US congress was significantly edited by the goons at CNN to make them look stupid
Time for a sequel to the social network

We’re not out of the woods yet. Just you wait....
guy with the glasses 👌
Jared L his name is actually Guy lol
That's Guy Verhofstadt of Belgium.
He also mentions The Circle. That's a great movie too, not just a book :)
yeah he had the best questions and the coolest glasses
His name is Jurgen Klopp.
For once, I'm proud of Belgium.
Guy Verhofstadt just burns him out all the way, saying all the right things.
Vlaams Belang won my dude. Belgium rocks.
Agreed.Proud of the EU questions.
He was surprised he actually had to think here unlike the US.
@Főfasírozó You are not even a real person :P
He was talking nonsense. His analogy was stupid af.
@Főfasírozó lol, Belgium founded the EU
Well it dissolved into a mess (0.32) ... Watching the entire hearing I would say this was caused by Zuckerberg not answering questions rather than the structure of the hearing.
Competitive huh? So why did they buy Instagram and What’s App?
Not only that, Facebook was only allowed to buy WhatsApp if they would not link user's Facebook profile to their WhatsApp profile. They did so anyway.
He was asked in this hearing when he'd decouple the two again, and comply with the law, but I don't think he answered.
Jeroen Bollen I think he will once faced with a impending break up of the company. No company would risk losing a market of 750 million people.
Are you aware that there are literally thousands of services that don't belong to Facebook and are also free to use?
Why Disney buy Lucas film Ltd, Marvel Studios, 20th Century Fox ?
I'm proud of and happy about the European Parliaments efforts to represent its citizens and their interests.
Raphael Bek They want to regulate Facebook to pursue their cucking plan.

Zukerberg has the best poker face I have ever seen.
I agree facebook should be regulated.
it is clearly regulated, that is why he has to show up here and answer questions. It is only a matter of to what extent they are going to be regulated, supervised or even control more. This testimony is a big progress for regulators to keep up with the speed of the technology revolution. Even the people in the industry could not comprehensively understand how quick it is developing. That is why the regulators are so worrying about their policies.
This is an important video. The Zucc is getting much too powerful.
CharlieOliverBates "is getting"? He has been for a long time
Then people simply need to stop giving him this power.. no one is forced to used Facebook's services and people need to realize they are the product, not the other way around. It's only "free" product in exchange for access to all your data and information. They are a publicly traded company and as such will use any mean to exploit whatever information they have access to in order to generate revenue, increase market share, and dominate their sector people seem to forget that.
Well if we're honest people are stupid and won't stop using it no matter what.
Jonathan People are physically addicted. It’s not as easy for some people to stop using the service because Zuckerberg has them by the balls.
This is a prime example of why the Verge is an excellent source of news. Simplify what needs to be simplified, show us the evidence, explain it clearly.
Athan Condax well they could have shown the part where one of the politicians stated that zuckerberg chose those kind of proceedings, i.e. everyone asks his or her questions and then he tries to answer them. They were initially against it, it seems.
But don’t trust the source too much as they may only show the parts of the evidence that align with their political views. I do still think the Verge is a great source of news, but be aware they only show you what they want to show

The reaction itself is funny though!! xD
Zuckerburg is completely out of his depth and making things worse with his cold demeanor. They need a seasoned CEO to run Facebook like Google did at the start.
Merrin Google isn't really better.
Gaunerchen still I trust them more then Facebook
I don't his demeanor was intentional. I'd say internally he felt nervous and under alot of pressure given the depths of this issue that no one really has much experience with handling. The previous monopolistic companies mentioned like microsoft had the skills and expertise to see a path toward a solution and execute. I don't think it will be easy to find a balance between protecting FB users from data mining and selling while allowing for users to continue enriching the site for the purposes of communicating and connecting people worldwide.
Merrin the real question is... how could he break the three laws of robotics?

Americans should be shame of your parliament and joke of politics you have... just a simple example how EU Parliament approach Marl Zuckerberg, direct, precisely and clever questions and not like your politicians...
Some of your "CLEVER" politicians questions... Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) . “So, how do you sustain a business model in which users don’t pay for your service?” “Senator, we run ads,” Zuckerberg responded, before breaking into a tiny smirk.
“I see,” Hatch replied. “That’s great.”
“I’ve got 4,900 friends on my Facebook page. I delete the haters and save room for family members and true friends on my personal page,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) told Zuckerberg. “I’m a proud member of Facebook, just got a post from my sister on this being National Sibling Day.”
Sen.
