I love seeing videos like these. Videos where you talk about things from your childhood, things you played growing up, etc. I enjoy seeing how passionate you are about it. Thank you for this.
Late to the party, but is it worth mentioning that a prototype Game Boy version of Panel de Pon NOT featuring the Yoshi's Island crew is not only buried in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge's data but fully playable using a button code? It blew my freakin' mind that that eluded me for almost 20 years.
This is my favorite game to date, I still keep my snes around and the only cartridge I own is Tetris Attack. It still holds up great today. I've poured half my life into playing this game. It's an absolute blast. Matt, you've been one of my toppest most top tier people to listen to for years now and hearing you send out a love letter to this franchise honestly warms my heart.
I remember seeing Pokemon Puzzle League as a kid at a store and thought it was like actual Pokemon battles and bought it. Was disappointed initially, but would go back to playing it time and time again. So much fun and a great mistake to make. Still have it and want to play it again!! Love the gameplay and the Pokemon package wrapped around it, especially the music.
Fantastic video, man! It made me dig up my N64 and Pokemon Puzzle League, because I had honestly forgotten what a big part of my childhood that game was. Thank you again, and keep it up!
I dunno if Matt will see this, but here's two alternatives to get the panel juices flowing. There's a fan game call panel attack that's free to download with a very active discord and online community. There's also a game currently in semi private alpha called Swapette Showdown.
Loved this, Matt!! I got that deep Puzzle League love as well. I'll say my favorite version is actually the version hidden in Animal Crossing New Leaf, that came with the Welcome Amiibo update!
I feel like Nintendo should just grab that New Leaf version polish it up a bit and throw it on the switch eshop. It's a good version, save for the fact that you have to unlock it as a minigame in AC to even access it. Add some multiplayer, shuffle up the opponent list (I believe it just took from your villagers plus tortimer) bam, easy money. Although I'd love to get an actual Pan de Pon released here, but really brand it with whatever I'll buy it, I miss this series. Fairies, Yoshi, Pokemon, Animal Crossing,Zubaz I'll buy any of em
I love the series from the beginning. I used to be good in Tetris Attack time. And I loved the music from Planet Puzzle League. It's a must in the console.
I can believe it worked it's way into your brain, the way Puyo Puyo did mine, I'll think of chains, test patterns on simulators, experiment on endless, but it's the competition that makes the rest of that stuff so interesting, doing maximum chains using more complicated patterns all the time and playing at high speed is more fun when you bury your opponent and the advanced strategy of poking your opponent with small power chains to gain an advantage or win early to mid game makes for tense matches!
funny this got recommended to me now but well very done and hey Nintendo of america and europe finally released the original version of panel de pon since i believe its the first time it got acknowledged that just isnt smash bros. seems like they got used to the fairies now
I remember you and Woolie playing Tetris Attack on the channel and I lost my mind. So many memories and emotions flooded my brain about a game I had once forgotten. A game, that's in fact, the first video game I played as a kid. For that, I thank you Matt. I thank you greatly.
Augh, the memories! The nostalgia! Tetris Attack was my jam, and to this day my little brother still has salt in his veins from the endless childhood wompings I put on him playing it. It may be the only game I was ever objectively good at.
Pokémon Puzzle League was awesome. Loved the fact that the music was all remixed Orange Island league songs. Also the reason I love Panel de Pon over other puzzle games like Puyo Puyo is bc you never feel like you're out of the game. Since garbage comes down & blocks go up, you're rarely blocked off from your own tiles. The game also freezes moving for half-a-second when you connect 2 pieces & as garbage is breaking, letting you set up more combos. Your mind is always moving. In other puzzle games, it's a race to see who can do a screen clearing combo first. In PPL/PDP, there's always a chance for a comeback & your mind is always operating.
I adore Puzzle League and I'm so happy that Matt, of all people, would do a video on it! Well researched vid and love the presentation as always. Keep up the good work.
The Animal Crossing Puzzle League does have a little bit more significance in one way; it lets you earn clothing items based on Lip, including Lip's Stick, so this is the first time Puzzle League references anything from Panel de Pon outside of Japan, even if its still crossing over with another series to do so.
I have never seen your channel before today... But I LOVE you for helping spread the word about this series! I've considered doing a similar type of video myself, but always felt I should hold off until I have a larger subscriber base, just so that I can spread the message as far as I can. xD Now, I can just refer people here! (Although TBH, I will probably make my own PdP video at some point, haha) I wish I could make more Puzzle League content, but honestly, the series doesn't make for very good Let's Play fodder. I've done a couple of videos on Super Plexis, and I've got a Pokemon Puzzle Challenge speedrun... But aside from these sorts of scripted videos (Which I am notoriously slow at actually making), it seems hard to use what voice I have here on RUclips to help new people find the series.
Actually, I DID remember DSiWare. I actually bought a couple things from there, and especially remember Looksley’s Lineup. A rather neat puzzle game about lining up optical illusions to find hidden stuff. One of my favorites from that short-lived shop. (Though nicely transferable to the 3DS)
I really liked the aesthetic choices for Planet Puzzle League - I was into the abstract trance-y vibes of puzzle games at the time. Meteos, Gunpey DS, Lumines...
Thanks for posting this! I just spent the better part of an hour trying to find differences between Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League. As someone who's bad at puzzle games and can't stand PKMN voice actors I'm okay with sacrificing the better AI and game modes for dat Yoshi aesthetic.
I say the only reason to pick certain trainers is that you like the sound the pokemon makes when you get chains. My favorite is Persian; that ferocious, screeching yell... Especially when it starts reverberating.
God, I played pokemon puzzle league so much I could hear the lines at 7:10 playing out in my head before the video even got there. I had no idea it originated with Panel de Pon, I'll have to check out the original. Thanks for making this awesome retrospective!
Goldenrod City theme is possible my favorite piece of chiptune music and I have never played Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, so 8:50 had me freaking out in excitement. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
This was a good ass video. I think one of my favorites from you. Really interesting that you love puzzle games and I always love hearing about someone's wildcard favorites
i love panel de pon, i have the japanese version full in box (it was cheap). also pokemon puzzle chalenge was suppose to be panel de pon GB, you can still access a prototype with a botton combination.
If there nis one on switch is will most likely use the Pannel De Pon name and themeing since the US and EU NSO release of Teteris Attack was The JPN version, Pannel De Pon
I've got a huge amount of nostalgia for Tetris Attack from my childhood and grew to love the cute and colorful characters of the original as an adult, so it's a bummer to see that the series is probably dying specifically because of their attempts to give it a better chance. Ironic, in a sad way. Maybe if they had stuck with the original setting it could have grown a cult following and then a big resurgence like Puyo Puyo had recently, but they had no way of knowing at the time.
It's weird to me that Nintendo hasn't actually crossed over Tetris and Puzzle League like Sega did with Puyo Puyo. That would fix the Tetris creator's regrets I think :D
Wouldn't mind seeing a retrospective of the Metroid series. I'd also love to see you do more videos on games you worked QA on - those are always very interesting.
That was wonderful Matt! I always wanted to get into this game and the style of the original game interests me alot. It's fun to see that it honestly did start on the SNES also.
I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't bring back at least Pokemon Puzzle League, with how crazy popular the Pokemon series still is. The original was a massive hit and I don't see why a modern take based on the original series wouldn't take. It would be fun to pit Red against Steven wouldn't it? Just transfer the N64 mechanics, add online and we're good!
I am a pro at Pokemon Puzzle League. What sucks is that there never was a sequel to it. And when I play with family or friends, i Just beat them in 20 seconds or less. Wish there would be a new game with multiplayer support
I found out: Tetris Attack for GB is really similar to the Panel de Pon GB hidden in Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, but more finished. Is Tetris Attack based on the Panel de Pon GB work they made?
Watching this gave me a smile. I was never good at it but I enjoyed it nonetheless its time for Lip to come back with a new release on the switch! Give us cute fairys Nintendo this aint the 90's anymore. Panel de pon 99 battle royal!
Honorable MattMan, might you perhaps inform us of your experience, if any, with the Puyo Puyo line of titles? If you haven't, and you're big on Panel de Pon, then that puzzle franchise would be straight up your alley.
Fuck I adore this series, LIP FOR SMASH!!! Was always a bit disappointed we only ever got reskins of this series, I want my adorable fairies, fuck yoshi and pokemon. Never knew about that GameCube sequel though, I think I need to check it out. Gosh my brothers got insanely good at this game series though... I always found it fun but I can not keep up with them, they are just mental at this game. Great video man such a nostalgia blast.
Do you have any interest in PuyoPuyo Matt? While there was a brief showing of a character in the video, I'm wondering would a retrospective on that seriesbe fun for you to do!
The PPL DS may have the most options, but losing the aesthetic presence it had in the older games makes it lose soooooo much in a different way. I get that in the US boys would look at panel de pon and immediately start fearing cooties and get why they used yoshi instead, but homogenizing the series into bland looking and sounding games on the DS was not the right way to go. The snes jp game has always been my favorite and these days with more females playing games I think it would catch on more today. In a rare move from nintendo, they seem to be trying just that too releasing the original PDP on the switch.
Oh, I just assumed that all of Matt's mind palace was dedicated to Simpsons quotes and trivia.
Also Animated Video Game show stupidity.
Finally being released in the west on the Switch!
no way, link?
I’m beginning to think Matt’s Retrospective is an omen that either a new game or re-release of a game, in the series, is coming.
It sure would be nice to see this series again. Online battles or just locally on the Switch would be cool.
It's on SNES Online now!!
I love seeing videos like these. Videos where you talk about things from your childhood, things you played growing up, etc. I enjoy seeing how passionate you are about it. Thank you for this.

Tbh my equivalent to Puzzle League is Puyo Puyo. I've never played a Puzzle League/Panel de Pon game, but they look pretty fun.
That's awesome. Tetris Attack is incredible and I'm almost the same. Really wish Nintendo would being back the series!
I remember seeing Pokemon Puzzle League as a kid at a store and thought it was like actual Pokemon battles and bought it. Was disappointed initially, but would go back to playing it time and time again. So much fun and a great mistake to make. Still have it and want to play it again!! always happy to see people talking about puzzle league
Nice gangster's paradise midi
Love this puzzle series and thats saying something.
In the future we could get
Matt Gets Married Xrd Sign
R e v e l a t o r
I hope you're playing Panel De Pon right now, Matt
Loved this, Matt!! I got that deep Puzzle League love as well. I'll say my favorite version is actually the version hidden in Animal Crossing New Leaf, that came with the Welcome Amiibo update!
16:12
A Little Bit of... Puzzle League, huh. That's a very quaint and distinctively British way to title the game
That's actually the Japanese name. "Chotto Panel de Pon" translates to "A little of Panel de Pon"
@@Deniii4000 Ooh, okay. Still quite a goofy lil' title
Pokemon puzzle league was my first video game! I was like 4 maybe when I got to play it.
I feel like Nintendo should just grab that New Leaf version polish it up a bit and throw it on the switch eshop. It's a good version, save for the fact that you have to unlock it as a minigame in AC to even access it. funny this got recommended to me now but well very done and hey
Nintendo of america and europe finally released the original version of panel de pon since i believe its the first time it got acknowledged that just isnt smash bros. seems like they got used to the fairies now
Technically it's also could have been due how Nintendo would have had to pay for using the Tetris-trademark again.
I remember you and Woolie playing Tetris Attack on the channel and I lost my mind. So many memories and emotions flooded my brain about a game I had once forgotten. A game, that's in fact, the first video game I played as a kid. For that, I thank you Matt. I thank you greatly.
METROID PUZZLE LEAGUE WHEN
Augh, the memories! The nostalgia! Tetris Attack was my jam, and to this day my little brother still has salt in his veins from the endless childhood wompings I put on him playing it. It may be the only game I was ever objectively good at.
recently discovered Pokemon puzzle league on the n64 games for the switch and its an absolute treat of a game.
This was a real eye opener! Had never heard of anything outside of Pokemon Puzzle League, which I played a ton of as a kid. Great vid Matt
When I think mind palace, the Millennium Puzzle’s labyrinthine halls come to mind.
Trongasm's memery in the editing is highly appreciated.
Tetris Attack & Pokemon Puzzle League are my favorite puzzle games OAT
Pokémon Puzzle League was awesome. Loved the fact that the music was all remixed Orange Island league songs.

I love these puzzlers too, I didn’t know there was more that preferred this style
Whenever I boot up my DS copy of Puzzle League, it's to hear it's surprisingly good soundtrack. 11:41 is definitely one of its standout tracks
I wonder if that bad dragon ad at 17:39 is real or was edited in...
Thanks for asking the question on all our minds.
Seriously the best Puzzle game. Great Retrospective!
The Animal Crossing Puzzle League does have a little bit more significance in one way; it lets you earn clothing items based on Lip, including Lip's Stick, so this is the first time Puzzle League references anything from Panel de Pon outside of Japan, even if its still crossing over with another series to do so.

thank you, doctor

Who could forget in 2002 when there was no Woolie? What a great time that was.
God, I played pokemon puzzle league so much I could hear the lines at 7:10 playing out in my head before the video even got there. I had no idea it originated with Panel de Pon, I'll have to check out the original. Thanks for making this awesome retrospective!
In the JP version of Panel de Pon DS, there's a Lip themed stage that is removed in the US version. But you can unlock it with an action replay.
Goldenrod City theme is possible my favorite piece of chiptune music and I have never played Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, so 8:50 had me freaking out in excitement. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
The Japanese Nintendo Puzzle Collection GameCube one gets ridiculously hype in 4 player mode, I just wish it didn't have so much slowdown
Must be hyped about puzzle league releasing on switch then
Haven't thought about pokemone puzzle league in ages. That hits my nostalgia.
The GBA version of the game is actually incredibly strong in terms of its customizability.
bruh the bad dragon ad at the end lmfao
Dude did any of the newer titles have that 3D mode that pokemon had, loved that mode lol
If there nis one on switch is will most likely use the Pannel De Pon name and themeing since the US and EU NSO release of Teteris Attack was The JPN version, Pannel De Pon

I remember as a kid I would go to a friend's house and would play a ton of Tetris attack with her, good times...
It's weird to me that Nintendo hasn't actually crossed over Tetris and Puzzle League like Sega did with Puyo Puyo. That would fix the Tetris creator's regrets I think :D
At the very least, the original Panel de Pon series does live on through Smash Bros with the iconic Lip's Stick. So...there's that!
8:23 ngl that wouldve been cool for 3ds.
I own most iterations of this game. First Tetris Attack all the way to 3DS
Wouldn't mind seeing a retrospective of the Metroid series. I'd also love to see you do more videos on games you worked QA on - those are always very interesting.
I love Panel de Pon! Great video!
Would love to see you do a retrospective on F-Zero sometime.
That was wonderful Matt! I always wanted to get into this game and the style of the original game interests me alot. It's fun to see that it honestly did start on the SNES also.
Wizards 101 had as puzzle league knock off as a mini game. It was my favorite want to play, Play did so much.👍🏼
Love those timeline graphics
At least you gave Prof. Oak his doctorate.
Yoshi's cookies and pkmn puzzle league were best panel de pon
Fun fact there is a secret lip stage in the Japanese version of planet puzzle league and pokemon puzzle challenge
The game is out on Super Nintendo for Nintendo Online on the switch, im sure you know that already.
This reminds me of a DS game i have got Meteos, is it the same as these i have never played a puzzle league game but they look very similar to Meteos.
Yeah I remember DSiWare! I got Cave Story on my DSi through that.
I am a pro at Pokemon Puzzle League. What sucks is that there never was a sequel to it. And when I play with family or friends, i Just beat them in 20 seconds or less. Wish there would be a new game with multiplayer support

Matt's Puzzle Matt Mattrospective
Maybe one day we’ll see Yoshi x Pokémon Tetris de Pon League Attack Challenge: A little bit of Puzzle.
Maybe one day, Matt..
I think guess faires are considered pests outside of Japan
Why is there a Matt branded bad dragon ad in this video?
Gods, the countless hours I put into Pokemon Puzzle League... BUT I did beat Mewtwo at least once! :D
Watching this gave me a smile. I was never good at it but I enjoyed it nonetheless its time for Lip to come back with a new release on the switch! Give us cute fairys Nintendo this aint the 90's anymore. Panel de pon 99 battle royal!
0:15 teasing a Tetrisphere retrospective?
This was pretty cool. Oughta pick up the Pokemon one on 3ds.
Honorable MattMan, might you perhaps inform us of your experience, if any, with the Puyo Puyo line of titles? If you haven't, and you're big on Panel de Pon, then that puzzle franchise would be straight up your alley.
Puzzle League 2nd gig: Revengance
Any Panepon fans who have an iPhone, there's a pretty decent clone called Super Plexis on the App Store
3:03 why baz is there
Do you have any interest in PuyoPuyo Matt? While there was a brief showing of a character in the video, I'm wondering would a retrospective on that seriesbe fun for you to do!
I *want* to enjoy this series, but I *can't* due to one limiting factor - _no vertical swaps._
Soo... was Meteos too different to cover here, or was it mostly about the main series games?
Play FlipOn if you guys haven't!
In a rare move from nintendo, they seem to be trying just that too releasing the original PDP on the switch.
I swear I've already seen this before. /s
So is this Puzzle Puzzle League?
Like Puyo Puyo pop now?
Dis is cool game
Yo Matt! You should do a retrospective on card based games like Baten Kaitos and Lost Kingdoms 2!
Have you played the Meteos series? There is also a Disney version. Both highly addictive.
