Well, if you’re a psychic, curse maniac, or a fighting-type trainer, you can use some techniques available to Pokémon. Psychics can use telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation, divination, clairvoyance, hypnosis, and other passive psychic abilities, like reading the history of an object or location, such as a prized possession, ancient relic, or family home. Curse maniacs can use some ghost-type techniques like curse, night shade, etc and can communicate with the dead, shadow-step, become intangible, inspire visceral terror in their foes, and can prophesy (predict the future with 100% accuracy); see: Morty, the gym leader. Fighting-type trainers can use a suite of fighting-type techniques (jump kick, hi-jump kick, circle throw, low kick, low sweep, focus blast, aura sphere, etc.) and have superhuman strength, vitality, and endurance.
As someone who plays AND runs PTU stuff for friends all the time, seeing Davvy giving some light to PTU really makes me happy, to those that think about giving it a try I say welcome to the world of PTU! I hope each and every one of your adventures are memorable and fun!
My friends and I have 2 wildly different PTU campaigns going: one of them is set in not-Edo Japan, and we’re a trio of siblings from a family that maintains a shrine to Moltres, going on a pilgrimage to the other shrines so we can ultimately prove our worth to our god and be blessed by it. My character’s kind of a Pokémon version of Princess Yue from Avatar in that she was stillborn but revived by Ho-Oh via a Rainbow Feather which let our parents pray to Ho-Oh, and that’s the reason I went with Hex Maniac and Sage as my starting classes. The other one’s actually based on Subjectively’s fan-made Mazah region, and we’ve done a mish-mash of the standard Gym challenge to prove our strength, dungeon crawling through ancient ruins and unraveling one PC’s long-lost divine heritage (literally granting him fire powers), and fighting the evil team of the region that’s fixing League fights and depopulating whole colonies of Pokémon to conduct experiments on shifting your type outside the Terastal phenomenon in Scarlet/Violet. A big secret in this game is that my character is the son of the BBEG and ran away, but we’re getting close to the reveal and I’m so excited because I worked with the GM and I’ve been dropping obscure hints and generally acting weird throughout the whole game, but ONLY when the evil team is involved.
Now I'm imagining a group of Goblins riding on the backs of Mightyamas... Or a group of Chwingas resting on a Snoralax's belly... Or any manner of Psychic pokemons working with Mind Flayers- GOD I wanna run a Forgotten Realm Pokemon Campaign now! XD
For general information, the file he’s referring to is a JSON file, and it is just a method of data storage that is really easy to use if you look up the format.
Ok, what? I have recently been in a pokemon pseudo-marathon recently, for nostalgia, and then you release this, combining my two favorite things? Thank you!
Dear Davvy... dear God please explain mutants and masterminds to me, it’s confusing as shit I nearly had an aneurism reading the players handbook. Thank you 😊
Seeing this title made me beyond excited! TheLoadingCrew's PTU: Utopus series is what got me into DnD and TTRPGs in general and so it's great to see a collab like this
Oh i have been staring at this system for the longest time but never had the group to run it, i love its portrayal of like the idealized form of all pokemon media
Fun story, when I played with my friends in PTU, they were all normal kids, nerds and shy boys...then there was Sid, my character. Did was this big, burly, bald punk who took no crap and was roughneck, stylist, and a dash of rocker. He loved his pokemon (mostly normal and fairy) the other players (whom he said was his "crew" and was generally a bad influence.) recruiting people into his gang and punching people in the face.
That's how I imagine that one rattata felt.. you know the one from red or blue. You caught him right off, maybe battled a little with him but he eventually was put into bills pc. Sitting there, imagining all the battles he could have. All the adventures he'll never go on.
Doesn’t really fit in the setting. Ever since a certain ancient human decided to go around slaying Pokémon with a sword, causing them to hide in tall grass, and was cursed by Arceus, transforming into the first Darkrai, humanity made a spiritual contract wherein they sacrificed their ability to use weapons for the ability to bond with and train Pokémon, which wasn’t really all that much of a loss seeing as how absurdly powerful some Pokémon are or can become.
I've known about TheLoadingCrew and PTU for a couple years now. I'm super stoked to see this. Maybe now PTU won't be some unheard of system. I've always wanted to play but lack the friends to play with. Lol.
I'm currently playing in a PTU game. It is super fun and I recommend it to anyone who wants to play a cool RPG campaign in the Pokemon world. The Excel spreadsheet is a lifesaver! Just don't change anything if the cell already has a formula in it.
As a guy whos run a bunch of PTU campaigns, this is a really good video to get people into it! Some personal tips I feel: First, there are 2 other Pokemon systems being made by the same team and hosted on the same website, so its worth knowing that so you don't download the wrong one! PTU is the most cohesive and feature complete, so generally you want to go with it, but theres also PTA (Pokemon Tabletop Advanced) which is an older version of the system, using D&D character stats for humans and pokemon stats for pokemon (which is why PTU is called 'united,' it unified the stat system to make it less confusing for pokemon-human interactions) and Pokemon Tabletop Journeys/Odyssey, which is the next set of rules in development, intended to streamline the rules to make the game simpler and faster to run. Its incomplete, and I don't have personal experience with it, but may be worth looking into if you find the amount of rules in PTU daunting. Speaking of which... If you're the DM, be prepared to make rulings on the fly. PTU does its best to emulate Pokemon down to every single system in the games, which means theres a LOT of niche rules and things you'll have to look up, and sometimes its easier to just say 'screw it, this is how I'm running it!' Hell this video didn't even get into describing base-stat-relation-ratios when talking about your pokemon stats and oh god, thats a thing and a half on its own to get your players to understand. As you play this game you will constantly discover there are new rules and fully fleshed out systems you didn't even know about in here - don't worry, just take it all in stride. Everything's a learning experience. And also, while I agree Roll 20 probably makes bookkeeping easiest, if you want spectacle, I run my game on Tabletop Simulator, where you can go on the workshop and download figures of every pokemon up to gen 7 that are ANIMATED to use in your campaign! They even have a little thing that makes them mega evolve - its really neat! I still recommend using that excel sheet they mentioned for character sheets though, it makes tracking stats so much easier, and automatically applies a bunch of modifiers that are a pain to keep remembering. And speaking of keeping track of things... you probably dont want to run a game for more than 4 players max... 3 being ideal. Each player is actually 2 players for the sake of the initiative count, since you have to worry about both the trainer and their pokemon, and as a DM you have to balance encounters accordingly. If you want to further extrapolate things, its more like a party of 3 trainers has 21 characters for you to worry about if they all have full squads. Balancing encounters is difficult and might take some getting used to, so be ready to change things on the fly if you realize your gang is hopelessly outmatched, or if they're actually curbstomping your encounter and - oh hey what do you know more wild pokemon heard the commotion and showed up! There are random pokemon generators out there for the latter issue which gives you a full sheet of stats for them. And also, dont be like me and make one of your bosses a ghost type early game when almost none of the cast has anything they can do to it. Ghosts are BS.
Really super helpful. Thank you both so much. Starting my pokecampain soon. I'll post a video or two on how its going. Not going to use the built in combat but using pokemon showdown instead. Thanks again!
Dude, I LOVE PTU. The only real problem I found with running a consistent session was the random encounters. Having to generate a new pokemon each and every time is a bit much, but it's WORTH it.
I have been running PTU since the days of PTA. I love it so very much and have 2 campaigns that are over a year old each, this system is so janky but I adore it. And yes..my players all horde so..many...pokemon to keep track of.
There's an excel fully automated with a LOT of functions for the PTU system. How much this pokemon gains on training exp? It fully integrates most features and edges with your pokemon. It's a beast and you should try it.
I plan on combining Pokémon with call of Cthulhu, making something that someone close to the Pokémon manga. I figured that a skill-based system would be better for Pokémon than a level-based one. Remember that in Pokémon, you’re just playing a normal person. To be clear about this it is mostly called of Cthulhu, but with Pokémon creatures and with the tape chart. This also means that humans are considered Pokémon and are like the EeVees of apes. I also might use calcium basic role-playing system after a while, but I’m actually fairly confident that Conneen with Pokémon would be a lot of fun. Golden edition you can’t capture legendary, you can gain their loyalty, but all legendary will both lower you sanity and will not be captured.
For anyone interested in alternative games for Pokemon there's a few options. There's Pokemon Tabletop Adventures which has released it's 3.0 version not too long ago which is looking much better than it's previous editions. There's also Pokerole which uses a dice-pool system inspired by the WoD games. And there's Pokemon Pen & Paper which is honestly the simplest Pokemon Tabletop game that I have found, for better or worse. I haven't had the chance to play them all so I can't really give any good information but they look neat and are worth a read.
I think the closest thing to a official Pokemon RPG was a Big Eyes, Small Mouth supplement, Cute and Fuzzy Seizure Monsters. Yes. BESM sure took itself seriously...
This always interested me, but I found the amount of stuff too intimidating and it didn't quite have what I was looking for, so I went with a simpler system called Pokérole for my campaign, though I'll definitely use this one someday
How many different types of _Pokémon_ tabletop homebrews are there, I wonder. So far, I can't tell if this is the one my friends and I are basing our _Mystery Dungeon_ game off of.
As someone who spent weeks learning the system, only to have my players drop it after only one session, there is not enough info explaining the intricacies of how this system works. I had to create a flash card to remind myself how combat worked.
Funny story about this. I spent a few months learning this game, I made a campaign, my own region with great history, and....my players said they were interested at first but they'd rather just stick to 5e. So I packed all my research up as I learned the game for nothing😅 would have loved to have tried this.
As a forever GM for this game I can say it's a lot of fun. No two games are alike (unless you make em that way) with trainers and teams always different and changing on the fly. Sadly one thing that really hinders this, like most TTRPGS, is the lack of GM. No one wants to run a grueling game with such a daunting book and there sadly isn't any modules to kickstart ideas. But please, do not let my griping dissuade anyone. This system is rich and wonderful with the ability to do practically anything. So get out there and catch some pokemon!
Hello there... i'm very intrigued about a way to calculate the damage in roll20 (including weaknesses/resistances)... so I wanna ask... ¿is there a way to do so in roll20 (macros or something) or do i have to use complementary tools (Excel for instance)?
I would love to play an apprentice Pokéball maker, someone who would apprentice under someone like Kurt. He goes and becomes a Pokémon trainer shortly after completing his apprenticeship. Where would I find the rules and how many points are you allowed to allocate?
.... I've been trying to build a system for pokemon for a while.... and this PTU sounds like it's already done exactly what I've been building. O.o Dammit, I wish I'd known that before I did all.... 300-some-odd pokemon stat blocks that I'd done so far. XD
Ok so random thing my brain came up with for a character but was thinking just now “what if i make it dnd” im about to start working on a campaign for a friend who has never played dnd (i have played but with very limited knowledge and resources, a lot of friends, and a dm who liked to mess with us but graduated so i dont see him anymore) anyways heres the concept A bunch of random kids get picked to be guardians. Basically people getting trained (along with their pokemon) to protect the legendary pokemon of different regions. It can be a person a region or a person for so many pokemon. Also each person gets pokemon that best match them. An idea i had to go along with it was none of them really knows the other’s identities so it can lead to interesting interactions (this works in my campaign since im the dm and the other person is the only player) if i want i can also mix in things like gyms and contests. Let me know what i need to fix but i think it could be a good idea if i tried
is there a Mystery Dungeon module or something like that? i've been wanting to do with my friends a "let's rebuild this city from the ground" campain as a mistery dungeon style game. also, weird question, anyone know of any system that allows digimon rp?
5:44 There is only 4 games on role 20 for me one is looking for a DM one is in a language I don’t understand one is a card game and one has over 100 players
There's also a Google Docs Sheet. Usually named the Fancy Sheet, If you don't have excel www.tapatalk.com/groups/pokemon_tabletop/gen-8-pokedex-t7257.html. Honestly check the original forum site in general. Though the original team is no longer working on the 1.5 build there is a dedicated group that homebrews this stuff that has the system up to date for Gen 8 and both of it's expansions
The game actually broadens the term "Shiny" to refer to any form of "Unique" Pokemon. You're encouraged to change not just the color of a Pokemon, but its type, abilities, moves, and other things about the Pokemon. Some examples they use are a Fire/Ghost Ninetales found in the ruins of a burned haunted house, a white Breloom found in caves with a Glow capability, a Spinda with heart spots that uses Attract differently, and a Crystal Onix that uses an entirely new type called Glass (making it a Glass/Ground-type). Also a giant Caterpie with fucking bonkers stats and powerful moves that can't evolve. I just thought that last one was funny.

I love how Davvy gives himself second billing on his own channel. Makes sense as this is Stewart's area of expertise.
It’s the channel standard. The only time that I didn’t do it was in my wizard spell guide, because there are just too many people.

Finally Pokémon war
Why did you make the font for the patreon scroll yellow? I couldn't read it when it was passing by the white part of the background
Davvy Chappy - ft. Davvy Chappy
there is also a Pokmeon 5E version btw :-D
Huh, I forgot about this one
This sounds fun asf.
is there a Mystery Dungeon module or something like that? i've been wanting to do with my friends a "let's rebuild this city from the ground" campain as a mistery dungeon style game.
also, weird question, anyone know of any system that allows digimon rp?
5:44 There is only 4 games on role 20 for me one is looking for a DM one is in a language I don’t understand one is a card game and one has over 100 players

What are your thoughts on a tortle armorer artificer?
Here, have some engagement, you deserve some engagement
does PTU work with PMD stuff?
There's also a Google Docs Sheet. Usually named the Fancy Sheet, If you don't have excel www.tapatalk.com/groups/pokemon_tabletop/gen-8-pokedex-t7257.html. Honestly check the original forum site in general. Though the original team is no longer working on the 1.5 build there is a dedicated group that homebrews this stuff that has the system up to date for Gen 8 and both of it's expansions
Please do mutants and masterminds next
Openlegend video with Puffin Forest??
Do a review of the cypher system 😭
Or numenara
PLEEEAAASSSEEE
Think someone can homebrew this into a mystery dungeons game?
POG
First! Oh my Chappy! Yay!
You did it. Hold onto this fame, it will take you far.
Or you can play Cute and Fuzzy Cockfighting Seizure Monsters, the ttrpg for mon rpgs.
Can I sponsor my brother's server here? He runs a discord all about the intro to PTU.
I wonder how Shinys are determined. My bet is 3 d100s, and if they all match, it's shiny ( either that, or the dm just decides which ones are shiny)

Shadowrun exists already though
Can you look at Warhammer 40k?
So... Rolemaster guide next?
All i can see is pokemon tabeltop united V2
The names and the pokeball background weren't centered to each other at the end and that bothers me so much. Love the videos though.
Where's the link to his channel?
