I liken this battle to a b-boy battle between a power-head (ISP) and a footwork/style-head (X-Men). If you go for the super-technical rapid-fire scratches you'll probably say ISP won. If you go for the body-tricks, beat juggling and cutting the records to diss the other DJ you'll probably say X-Men won. Either/or, this was a dope fucking battle.
there would only be able to be a comparison between these two styles were they exactly the same. this is the perfect examples of the two hybrid strains of turntablism, both including body tricks, skratching, mixing and juggling. all of those are shown here but shown in different strengths amongst the two crews. our perspective now is based on what has occurred since. those and i who saw this video in the 90s and back then we understood all men on stage as on the avant garde of the art form
Thats whats up. I started back in 87 spinning alot of freestyle and then got into the house, hip hop and r&b. Then mastered salsa, merengue, reggae, soca and bachata. I do alot of lounges in NYC on fridays and saturdays and you have to know how to do it all. It was DJ TLM that inspired me to get into some turntablism and incorporate it into my sets to enhance them some more. I love this shit but you know it's not for the clubs. Check DJ TLM out, nice combo of turntablism, blending and party rockin.
you can tell who was a dj and in what era by these comments...i came up in the 90s and body tricks & juggling were always what i did, cutting was secondary...
My favorite thing about this video is Q-bert proving that he could have been a pretty good beat juggler if he put his mind to it. Alot of people peg dude as "just" a scratch cat, but he's really just an incredibly talented musician who chose to focus on scratching. X-Men won this joint though.
East coast bias? Never that homey. During the whole east coast west coast shit during the 90's I was the only one out of my team that was like that west coast shit is fucjin hot. You're entitled to your opinion as I am. And I feel raida cleaned they're asses up real good. And Total eclipse demolished Babu when they went head to head. And I'm a big time Babu fan!!!
Listen to the juggles homey. There just as complex as anything the isp did and you may not like it but this is a battle and body tricks are a part of it. And I have to correct myself. When I said Craze was one of the first I meant Cash Money. And show me one vid that q is doing other than scratching. His juggles aren't anything special, his scratching is what makes him who he is.
Much respect to you homey. I like the way you set me up, Post up some shit I would like to see. I'm no turntablist but I get busy with the mixing. Grew up spinning house music and freestyle(Puerto rican here), Thats why you heard me drop those names cause thats what I came up on. As far as hip hop my knowledge is no where as extensive as yours but I know enough cause i love it and still play it. just got into the beat juggling shit. Always knew how to scratch though. Good arguing with you! Peace
Actually Jazzy Jeff,Spinbad and DJ Craze out of Philly paved the way for turntablism. they were doing it in it's early stages in the late 80's. ISP didn't show up until the early 90's.
will garcia & ilovelasvegas nevada... i know its old, but im just asking ... do you both dj? if so i'd love to see this argument re-started & ended with a mix contest!!! from what im reading it seems you both dj ... so fuck hip hop knowledge ... put up 2 mixes lets see who got more skill...
you know what? I stand defeated, you definitely hit the mark on those clubs but left out Paradise Garage,The fun house the red Zone,mk's, paladium, bedrocks etc. As far as the other questions,no I couldn't name them off the top of my head but definitely know what you're talking about. Actually i went to art and design with the graff writer that did the mantronix covers. his name was james Jorsling aka gnome. You have bested me good sir!!!
XMEN the home of hip hop ! flow, style and real vinyl ! ..... 20 years on XMEN still look hip hop,, longlastin !...... 8.55 hip hop in its purest form... 12" records !
But like q said. RAIDA CANT CSRATCH. And there battle ing international SCRATCH pickles. ISP starts by murdering xmen with 1 turntable and nothing but new style turntablism. Don't get me worm XMEN AR FOR REAL LEGENDS. THIS IS AN OLD VIDEO and they all have come a very long way. LEAGENDY. but ISP gave xmen a lesson. Nice 80's style body tricks. Rob swift definitely most progressive. At this timeRIP ROC (the bruce lee of tricks)this is talent VS show. ISP talent kills. Come on. Both Q"s sets are unbelievably insane for now let alone what 20 years ago That why he is the best
ISP LOOK DATED in 2015 ! thats my point !! scratching?? a million to one... how many DJ's today can rock two 12" hip hop records... flip them to death,, i can count on my finger !! .. however a DJ gotta be able to rock 2 records .. ISP, scratch scratch and more scratch,, hip hop is HEDNOD, CRISPY BEATS,, & CULTURE... ...original hip hop style x2 records,,, flash, herc jay 1978 & beyond !
Raider actually takes the piss ! No fukin about with the static and beat flip ! 2015 and still hip hop ! ISP clones,, = serbia to sydney ! XMEN hip hop rawness longev !!
Damn these battles bring back alot of good memories. Sorry boys and girls but body tricks went out in '91 when Q-Bert was robbed by DJ David with that cheesy hand spin on the turntable. Respect to Roc (RIP) and I saw him a few times but those moves were just played out.
Got to remember Q got in the accident so he could not do as many or close to no body tricks any more that way i think ISP one this one because the skill that mike and Q and shortcut brought is a little more technical then what X-men brought in this battle. yes X-men bring a lot of mean body tricks and cuts when they did but give it up for Q mixing Roc the bells with just fader and scratch all though all deejays know that a song meant for body tricks
I am from the east,NYC to be exact and I'm giving them the nod because I feel they beat em. Guess you must be from the wild wild west and giving the pikz the edge because of it. But hey you're entitled to your opinion as I am. In the end everyone wins getting to see 2 legendary crews go at each other.........Oh by the way roc whooped that ass by himself! How ya like me now!!! :)
I was just sayin the same thing to my boy. ISP had mastered all the other skills of battling. They could do the showmanship style in their sleep. no way xmen were doing any of the technical stuff ISP could do. just aint happening. but roc raida absolutely destroys his sets, plain and simple.
lol it was a joke referring to your guys argument ... & mp3 superstar dj .... me ??? hahahaha ok sure - i'll let that be your observation of me. obviously you've listened to none of my mixes - if you did you just might like them like millions of others. my mixes are all 2 turns a mixer & on some a tascam porta02 cheapest quality cassette 4 track you can buy. ill just say you're comment is ... un-researched. you got some trivia skills - i got dj skills bruh - 2 facts not even an argument.
Sorry but the juggles were better and the battle style in general were better by the Xmen. The only thing isp did was Q doing his scratch thing which is about all he ever does.
You know being from the west coast I could accuse you of the same bias. I think you may need to get off that west coast bullshit! Total Eclipseeeee!!!!
it comes down to i.s.p bringing new unseen/heard stuff to this battle that blew everyones fuckin mind. whether x-men appreciated it or hated on it, either way it was something that boggled their minds because none of them could fathom that someone out west was taking shit to the next level & was done with beat jugglng with body tricks & letting records play for words to dis the other dj &/or crew. - I.S.P. could do all that x-men were doing - the other way around? ...not so
I'm hearing a lot of dumb comments on here. The general consensus back then was that, novel as the body tricks were, the Piklz were just so far ahead in innovating new techniques. I saw Q doing juggles as technically competent as the X-Mens' two years before this battle. The body tricks had already been done to death. The Piklz were something special, no-one came close.
have to agree ... a BIG um na!!! brought nothin new to the table. piklz brought new concepts & styles that xmen couldnt even fathom, let alone do. piklz did no body tricks as a sign that "hey - that shits played - give it up already..." ... like for real.
I feel really bad that the caliber of Mista Sinista is with the x-men during this battle. If the x-men were real they'd probably be really pissed at the performance of the rest of x-men.
shortkuts juggles had roc beat by a mile. mike and Q's scratch was more than enough to take care of the xmens basic jugglin. The picklez always beat them making the decision unanimous. I'm guessing your from the east coast and youre giving roc the nod cause dude just passed away (r.i.p. roc!)
its like the dream team vs serbia in olympic basketball. i mean isp destroyed especially in the team battle it was a massacre. big ups to the executioners tho.
This was the good ole days.Turntablism had a spirit to it that cant quite be explained, you had to experience it.
when battling was battling.
Sinista is looking funny when licking those fingers like they are ice cream XD Respect!
one time i seen him lick hes fingers over 100x . like back to back. even while the rest of the crew is djing and hes just chilling.
@@calibomber209 😭😭😭
WOW! Q-Bert fuckin' killed dat shit, the Raida came back with a direct hit!!!
WOw! Thank you! The best is seeing Crazy Legs's reactions. Best part: NO LAPTOPS!
I liken this battle to a b-boy battle between a power-head (ISP) and a footwork/style-head (X-Men).

Finally a sensible comment.
wow what a battle they all rocked shout out to the x men and isp wow !!!!!
Q bERT LOOKS MAD YOUNG AND HE KILLED IT AS USAL. pROPS TO BOTH TEAMS.
6:50 Q-Bert’s routine an absolute heater!!
2019 bout to be 2020 and yet no djs can touch this. not counting craze. rip roc raida.
Dude, you're missing the Sinista "Cold Gettin' Dumb" routine. That was the best individual routine of them all!
Shit, I think you're right... Not sure how I missed that.
That juggle was Fire!
Just uploaded
First time i seen this.Heard about this battle years ago.Couldn't get in the uk on pal format.
THAT WAS THE COLDEST BEAT BOX JUGGLING ROUTINE TIL THIS DAY!!!!
what is the title of 5:40 track ?
Thats whats up. I started back in 87 spinning alot of freestyle and then got into the house, hip hop and r&b. Then mastered salsa, merengue, reggae, soca and bachata. What's "Freestyle"?
you can tell who was a dj and in what era by these comments...i came up in the 90s and body tricks & juggling were always what i did, cutting was secondary...
You say you play in lounges in NYC but in another post you say you don't DJ in public?
Which is it?
My favorite thing about this video is Q-bert proving that he could have been a pretty good beat juggler if he put his mind to it. Alot of people peg dude as "just" a scratch cat, but he's really just an incredibly talented musician who chose to focus on scratching.
X-Men won this joint though.
Word X men
22 years later, and I've still never seen another DJ do anything as impressive as that shit that Q does at 7:18. Can any of you do that?

8:31 we have a winner!
I give it about 10 years to see Roc Raida's daughter doing body tricks like her father. RIP Raida.
I'm loving this!
Much respect to you homey. I like the way you set me up, Post up some shit I would like to see. I'm no turntablist but I get busy with the mixing. Raida burned them cats by himself!
big up Will Garcia for being a fan.
Respect to Q, but Roc Raider killed all these cats hands down!! Dissing Mikes tones!! LOL! Awesome stuff! Thanks for posting @djreal.
Eclipse told me the same thing in Miami.
he wasnt imitating Q-bert lmao he was imitating mix master mikes test tone performance.....
He was mockin Mixmaster Mike from part 1, was hella funny though lol
ah ... good memories from TWILO's July 1996!
Why would you say that? Just asking for a bit of clarity.
Word! X
Crazy Legs faces were CLASSIC!!! LMAO!
Is that Crazy Legs sitting by ISP?!

Roc Raida didn't have to play Q-Bert like that...LOL!!!
7:15 🔥🔥🔥

roc raida the king of the battle.... destroys all suckers !
MISTER SINISTER!!!! THAT'S MY MAN!!!
I used to watch this tape religiously. X-Men was clearly out classed.

Actually Jazzy Jeff,Spinbad and DJ Craze out of Philly paved the way for turntablism. they were doing it in it's early stages in the late 80's. ISP didn't show up until the early 90's.
great! :)

Raida's intro killed them all

... that would be mike that did the hat movement he is imitating.
Q did juggle at 7:00 gee...you probably didnt notice cause he wasnt spinning around or doing jumping jacks
😂 That was a east coast or NY thing I never got into.
He looked into isp but they didn't show his reactions to the Xmen. All in all it was a great battle!
roc raida did kill it, the pickles were kinda sloppy in this one but more advanced in some ways real close hard to call
SKRATCH PIKLZ
Raida imitating Q-Bert @ 8:32 was GOLD.
Mmmike
SKRATCH PIKELZ all the way!
Raida 4Life
you must admit even nyc legend crazy legs was for ISP with his mind blown
Shortkut bangin that james brown real nice ;)

Comeback of the century. Keep on with your ambiguous statements.
Sinista smoked everbody, ISP won the team part, but they lost 1 on 1 against the X-Men
Damn and he was still able to whoop that ass? Thats a bad mutha may he rip!
Qbert RLZ!
I am from the east,NYC to be exact and I'm giving them the nod because I feel they beat em. Guess you must be from the wild wild west and giving the pikz the edge because of it. damn sinista you need some spit? just gross dont wanna use his set after that performance
You know being from the west coast I could accuse you of the same bias. I think you may need to get off that west coast bullshit! Total Eclipseeeee!!!!

its all nice...respect tabalist culture...
