A fun part about the directors is that they had only done comedy before this movie, and the most successful things they had been a part of were the shows Arrested Development and Community. That led to these two comedy directors making one of the most celebrated superhero movies ever.

@@AneudiD78 It worked on _some_ phones at the time but not all and maybe only in the US (not long after I saw the movie in the mid 80s I distinctly remember trying it on a pay phone here in the UK and no dice unfortunately :).
Yeah, it kinda highlights the plot hole of each of the post-Avengers solo films. Now that the Avengers are a team, why can't they give each other a call to lend a hand (or a really strong pair of green fists) each time they encounter a major threat on their own? The movies never really have an answer for that, since it would probably mean that they'd be over in 5-10 minutes. It's the classic old plot hole of "Why didn't they do that earlier in the movie? Because then we wouldn't have a movie." So it's really just better not to think about that.
@glennwelsh9784 they can't really do like the comic books do, which is have a little blurb at the bottom that says Iron Man is busy fighting AIM in Tennessee. Especially since in some of these movies they're supposed to happen simultaneously, or at least with some type of overlap But also, I think like, "Where is Iron Man? Well, we know he doesn't live in DC." So, while you might be able to call him, he's not just going to show up. Whereas later on when things happen in New York, it makes sense to question why Spider-Man doesn't show up.
@@glennwelsh9784 I think this film does have the best justification. This is all secret spy stuff, the manhunt for Captain America wasn't on the news, it was a SHIELD/Hydra operation at point-blank range with SHIELD HQ. If Nat or Steve had actually called any of their friends they would've alerted SHIELD to their location and possibly caused more damage. At this stage Tony and Bruce are in Stark Tower in New York, Thor was most recently in London with Jane, Hawkeye is probably at home in Iowa. So the we didn't have time justification holds water. Also in his first appearance Nick Fury shuts down JARVIS, so SHIELD potentially has the tech or the foothold in Tony's tech to actually disable or Override the Iron Man suit, so maybe having Tony show up could make things worse. As for Bruce...I wouldn't really rely on the Hulk's IFF in this kind of situation.
@@etthelost - Touche! My only complaint about that movie is that they had Wolverine looking the best he had ever looked up until that point - in the future, with grey streaks in his hair, yellow in his suit, and the adamantium claws back... but we never got to see him fight any sentinels then. Obviously it made sense for the plot, but darn.
Someone mentioned how this movie had tie-ins with "Agents of SHIELD" (on ABC). Also of note, the often overlooked series "Agent Carter" premiered shortly after this. It is definitely not critical watching for the MCU, but it is worth calling out for Haley Atwell's great performance and the look at Peggy Carter and Howard Stark's roles in the creation of SHIELD.
@@OwlyrossI love the show but I was glad AoS untethered itself from the movies. Because the moment they started doing their own thing the show became amazing, almost perfect
@@JamailvanWestering It's honestly more aggravating that the films didn't react to what was going on in Agents. AoS's premise was based around the idea that we'd see the fall out of the movies in more detail and that really meant something with Age...it's one of the few things I hard disagree with Feige over. But at least the show had a good long run. And Agent Carter was just incredible. Or maybe I think Hayley Atwell is perfect no matter what. Oh obligatory, Quake did it better than Captain Marvel shout out.
Also, Winter Soldier has the Super Soldier serum just like Cap. That’s what Hydra was experimenting on him with. So he’s basically Captain America with PTSD. Bucky is my favorite MCU character. Best character arc.
The Australian one is hilarious. AC/DC makes sense, but how many Americans know what a Tim Tam is? And even if Cap consulted Australians, come on, Skippy?
So Shanelle knows who Scarlet Witch is. Now I really wanna see a reverse meme of her dressed as Wanda telling you-know-who, "I don't even know who you are" With you-know-who replying, "You will "
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was half way through their first season when the producers were told about this movie. The way they incorporated this into their show was legendary. It sounds strange, bu this is the first film that nailed how Cap is portrayed to move and fight in the comics. I mean comics are 2D... they do not move. But something about the previous two Cap appearances is so inferior to his movement and fighting in this. The scene where he tears through the building and throws the shield at Winter Soldier is one of my most rewound scenes in the MCU. And the Winter Soldier "screech" score is fab. This was the best MCU movie by far.
This is my literal favorite movie. Not just production value but story telling, bringing something 70 years later to evolve the stakes. I actually believe Steve's story line is genuinely heartbreaking. From his point of view everything he sacrificed his life for in the past didn't truly stop Hydra so its a huge gut punch for him.
The Bucky past and present experiments started with him when Steve first found him, “thought you were dead, thought you were smaller” which is what allowed him to survive the fall. The brainwashing came after they found his body in the snow, hence, The Winter Soldier. This movie is amazing and everything the Russo brothers do in this universe is phenomenal. You have some darn exciting stuff coming up Sha. Enjoy
@@maxducoudrayit may also come from a poem talking about the summer soldier and the winter soldier. The winter soldier is the one who is fighting on through the tough times
That little run up the wall as Steve rounded the corner IS faster than just running, because he'd have had to slow down a little to take the turn properly if he'd stayed running on the floor. Much the same way that bobsleds (for example) ride up on a curve to take a turn at speed. That aside, this is - in my very humble opinion - STILL the best MCU movie ever made. It's not about the world-ending stakes, it's not about caped gods flying around destroying entire cities while trying to fight the bad guys, it's not overly fantastical, AND it's based on one of my favourite comic book arcs from Cap. It feels exactly like the sort of thing Captain America was made for. It's also just a really REALLY solidly made movie that could almost stand completely alone - separate from the MCU in general - and still be rock solid.
Chris and Scarlett were in The Perfect Score (2004) about teens stealing SAT answers to have better collegiate options. You can really see the chemistry back then, so it's not surprising they just riffed for dialogue in this film.
This is, by far, the best movie in MCU. Civil War comes close, but only close. It's a spy movie - the only thing is it's not James Bond, but Capt. America. High hopes for Captain America: Brave New World.

Trivia: The "Scream" that is the Winter Soldier's callsign in the film is actually a remux of Bucky's scream when he fell from the train in the first CA movie. It was meant to be both character specific; and evoke a sense of the monster appearing like in a slasher film.
My favorite bit of trivia is that the Winter Soldier's theme which includes the screeches like the one at 39:42 was made using Sebastian Stan's scream in Cap 1 as he fell from the train.
The Russos previously directed episodes of Arrested Development and Community. It was their work on a famous “paintball” episode of the latter that earned them this job. As a result, you’ll see multiple Community cameos in their movies and Arrested Development Easter eggs. The janitor they pulled a gun in was Danny Pudi who played Abed.
The Russo Brothers did this film after directing numerous episodes of Dan Harmon‘s show community. Specifically, the action packed paintball episodes. It started a game amongst the community fandom because the Russo Brothers would bring actors from community into the Marvel movies with them. For example, Danny Pudi, who played Abed Nadir on community is in the shield headquarters and move to let Captain America make his speech.

Bucky was made into a super soldier when he was experimented on in the first movie. Zola was able to recreate the serum. This does get revealed in something way way later but not in as many words, definitely not as if it’s a big revelation. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone be surprised by it, honestly. I think most just assumed he was made a super soldier
I love how Natasha'a skill is highlighted in the mall scene, keeping them safe while also keeping them from starting a fight that they probably wouldn't win. She's so cool!
Knowing that S.H.I.E.L.D. was compromised by HYDRA adds more weight to certain scenes in the earlier MCU movies. It definitely shows us what Senator Stern’s actual motivation was to get his hands on Iron Man’s suit in Iron Man 2.
I appreciate the speed you're taking through the MCU. When you get to this movie, you really feel like putting the brick on the accelerator to go through more!
Fun Fact: Chris Evans did all of his own running scenes but they did edits make him faster to make his powers accurate. They said that his running form is 100% efficient and almost impossible for a stunt double to recreate it. Apparently he did ballet as a kid and his running style is described as "a dancer's run". If you look at any of his running scenes, his head has no up-and-down movement.

I like how this movie took a different turn from past Marvel superhero movies leading up to this point.
Especially since in some of these movies they're supposed to happen simultaneously, or at least with some type of overlap
But also, I think like, "Where is Iron Man?
😂😂 i know poor Falcon
Still my favorite MCU film. Cap telling Bucky, "I'm with you to the end of the line" broke me.
Every. Single. Time. 💔😭
My favourite line from the whole film
The brotherly love beautiful ❤❤❤
Such terrific writing, acting and directing in this film. So good!
SO SAD
@@ShanelleRiccio Marvel was just preparing me for what was to come. Those bastards 🤣
This movie and Gurdians of the Galaxy were released the same year. Great year in the MCU!
Not to mention, days of future past - X-Men. Great year!
@@maximillianosabenya agreed, in the comic he stays behind and Kitty goes back, but for movie purposes, it was the right change.
So pumped for Guardians
Someone mentioned how this movie had tie-ins with "Agents of SHIELD" (on ABC). Also of note, the often overlooked series "Agent Carter" premiered shortly after this. It is definitely not critical watching for the MCU, but it is worth calling out for Haley Atwell's great performance and the look at Peggy Carter and Howard Stark's roles in the creation of SHIELD.
Oh I wish they would have kept Agents of Shield in the continuity
@@3Rayfire not just Quake, May, Yo-Yo, Simmons all were better written and stronger woman than outside of Nat from the movies
19:10 “Specimen.” 😂 I love it.
Also, Winter Soldier has the Super Soldier serum just like Cap. That’s what Hydra was experimenting on him with. So he’s basically Captain America with PTSD. Bucky is my favorite MCU character. Best character arc.
Fun fact that shot of the list was different in different countries to reflect their regional differences
I was checking the comments before making the same comment........
@@CoastalNomadsame
The Australian one is hilarious. AC/DC makes sense, but how many Americans know what a Tim Tam is? And even if Cap consulted Australians, come on, Skippy?
LOVE haha
So Shanelle knows who Scarlet Witch is.
Now I really wanna see a reverse meme of her dressed as Wanda telling you-know-who, "I don't even know who you are"
With you-know-who replying, "You will "
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was half way through their first season when the producers were told about this movie.
Nick Fury’s grave stone quotes Jules from Pulp Fiction “the path of the righteous man”
I missed that! time for a Pulp Rewatch!
This was reallllly well done! A favorite for me too (so far)
My fav Marvel movie.
Enjoy
What's crazy is that they never show Bucky hand to hand or strength in the first film...he basically brandished a gun for the most part
I don't think the Winter Soldier name comes from finding him in the snow. Winter is a term commonly applied to Soviet things during the cold war.
@@maxducoudrayit may also come from a poem talking about the summer soldier and the winter soldier. The winter soldier is the one who is fighting on through the tough times
@@chadjenkins4876 Possibly but also it is a comic character first and Marvel’s soviet team is called the Winter Guard.
@@maxducoudray Yeah, it's just a Marvel Soviet naming convention.
I loved that the downfall of Shield carried over into Agents of Shield. Great effort
My favorite Captain America movie! The elevator fight is one of my favorite scenes. My favorite line from the movie “Captain’s orders.”
Yep, standing up to tyranny and deceit, no matter the odds.
I totally agree with all of your points. I love when these tie in, but especially love when they're good stand-alone movies!
FINALLY! My fave MCU film!
Sam was a PJ in the USAF, the closest thing to a real-life super hero you're going to see!
Truth. They are the ones all the other special forces call when they get in trouble.
What are even those acronyms ?
@@gabrielleroux2333PJ’s are pararescue teams with the US Air Force. They do a lot of search & rescue work. They also rescue downed airmen & aid other Special Forces teams in need of assistance.
"That Others May Live" is the motto of the USAF Pararescue and would be an excellent one for Captain America too
A buddy from my basic training flight became a PJ. To look at him, you'd never know how hardcore this guy was.
Trivia: The "Scream" that is the Winter Soldier's callsign in the film is actually a remux of Bucky's scream when he fell from the train in the first CA movie. It was meant to be both character specific; and evoke a sense of the monster appearing like in a slasher film.
Sam is like Hawkeye. They're normal human soldiers that are extremely skilled with a particular weapon.
Thanks for this!! Helpful!!
You will also find out what SHIELD stands for when you watch Iron Man. Agent Coulson keeps repeating it until he just finally calls it SHIELD.
My favorite bit of trivia is that the Winter Soldier's theme which includes the screeches like the one at 39:42 was made using Sebastian Stan's scream in Cap 1 as he fell from the train.
"When I had nothing, I still had Bucky" - an iconic line that signifies Loyalty beyond friendship.
This movie just sits on a different level than anything else Marvel studios produced. It's unreal.
Co-Director Joe Russo was the doctor who treated Natasha's shoulder.
Still one of the best MCU movies.
"Now I know what SHIELD stands for!" - as if Shanelle never watched Iron Man....

Ok, show of hands.
When Shan said "DC?" at the beginning, how many replied to their screens with "No, Marvel." Lol
😂 missed op for a joke on my part
Bucky was made into a super soldier when he was experimented on in the first movie. Zola was able to recreate the serum.
This does get revealed in something way way later but not in as many words, definitely not as if it’s a big revelation. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone be surprised by it, honestly. I think most just assumed he was made a super soldier
It's good to remember that in the comic books no one stays dead permanently other than Spiderman's Uncle Ben
And even that's only true for some values of "Spider-man" :).

@@ShanelleRiccio I’ve been a subscriber for a few years, I’m so happy that you’re enjoying the MCU!

"are we ever going to get that story" Yes, and I think it's a great story

I think it's a terrible story, cause it's literally just a joke, and removes all weight from him saying that in this movie.
@@Eidlones I don't think it's a terrible story in itself, but it definitely makes his line here pretty silly :P What can I say, that's what happens when you write something "badass" but don't actually have a plan to back it up...

This is like a 70's political thriller.
It's so very appropriate they got Robert Redford.

I think this movie is the strongest of the Marvel series so far. Great story and the Russo brothers are great directors.
20:31 "Shall we play a game?" was from the film War Games. Have you seen it?
This was during the time when the TV side was the most integrated with the movie side. (The MCU is both.) Agents of SHIELD was in S02, I think, and they were reacting to the events of Winter Soldier, just like they reacted to the events of Dark World.
Near the end of S01.
Actually, Season 1, episode 17 ties directly with the release of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier". The episode "Turn, Turn, Turn" aired on April 8, 2014. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was released in theaters on April 4, 2014.
Likewise, "Thor: The Dark World" lined up with Season 1, Episode 8 "The Well". And Extremis from "Iron Man 3" was very much a part of the first 7 episodes of the show.
@@TheCkent100 Yes, we see the exposing of Hydra from those characters' perspectives, and it pretty much gives the show a "soft reboot." I think it got better after that.

"Why didn't they just shoot Captain America's legs?" - Moments like those I just tell myself, "It's a movie."
Also, most gun training is built around center mass aiming. That said to quote T2, "It's a damn minigun" the first shot is accurate after that, with that thing blazing between 2000 and 6000 rounds per minute that, guy was an ace for keeping it on a target that was advancing on him at all.
😂 yeah fair
Great reaction! The Captain America movies, to me, are the best done, best written, movies in all three phases of the MCU. They are three of my top 5 MCU movies (admittedly I waffle a lot between #5 and #6). They are superior not for the action elements, which are excellent, but the stories and the character development of each are incredible. The Russos did an excellent job on this one for certain.

Running up the wall a bit on sharp turns in hallways would probably be beneficial to Captain America because he runs so fast and doesn’t want to lose momentum when he’s chasing someone.
upon another rewatch, I think he needed the cool little run up
@@ShanelleRiccio But I agree, it wouldn’t help any normal human being…even Usain Bolt.
I like how this movie took a different turn from past Marvel superhero movies leading up to this point. The spy genre really shows through and slowly reveals plots/subplots that call back to the already established MCU as well as lay the groundwork for future movies. One scene that not many people catch, when the trip corner Jasper Sitwell on the roof, as Stiwell explains the algorithm he name drops Bruce Banner and Stephen Strange - showing depth in the writing and future vision for the MCU. The tool he used to cut a hole in the road to escape, is a reference to his Star Wars character.
Speaking of which, every movie in Phase 2 of the MCU has a character lose a hand, also a reference to Star Wars.
