Something very important to know about them is that they’re VERY sensitive to fluctuations in water parameters, you need to frequently test your water and when you do a water change make sure that the new water you’re putting in is the exact same temp, harness, etc.
Also when you’re putting the new water in, do it slowly so the tetras don’t get shocked. Drip acclimating is a good idea.

@@moose8846 That’s true. But in my experience and many others, neons have been much more sensitive than other tetras. At least when you get them cheap from a big chain pet store.

Another tip is getting ich medication whenever you buy them. Every time I have added new neons to my tank an
ich outbreak occurs. Never had this issue with other fish.

I'm still nostalgic about my brother's pet tetras. There was one who's spine got all wonky, but he lived. He was called Twist Tail. He lived several years, even surviving after they were all presumed to be dead. For like months, nobody fed them and then it just showed up and lived a while after that.

You can get less but they will feel uncomfortable. Only house a single betta or shrimp in a 5 gallon. 5 gallon parameters can swing a lot because of the size & these guys are sensitive to changes. Keep it planted to minimize your water changes. I haven't bought anything other than an empty tank, and I'm doing a lot of research fist. I'm considering either Neon or Cardinal Tetras, but I don't massively want to limit what plants I can add, due to them eating them all.
On another side, I read that if your fish are eating your plants, float things like lettuce or spinach in the water, and the fish will eat them instead. My issue with this is that fish would encounter neither of those plants in the wild, so why would I feed them to the fish?
Would you be able to provide some clarity into this, as I'm not sure its all adding up for me? Thanks.

My neons are very passive in my planted aquarium, it has an assortment of rotala rotundifolia, crypts, duckweed and labellia cardinalis. Maybe it depends?

Ah. Should have medicated the newly added neon tetra when I bought them... completely wipe out all the existing neon tetra after I was gone for a few day. Ick is such a big problem.
Does overdosing on Ick guard kill these fish as well?

What do you do if one gets sick for example swim bladder, since they are social fish do you just treat the whole tank or put it in a quarantine tank alone?

You probably already got fish but yes and no if you are meticulous abt ammonia and ph than you most likely can but since tetras are schooling fish even tho they are small they like room to zip around

New to fish keeping my 7 neon have been in my newly cycled tank 8 days i read after the fact that cardinals are considered at better choice. To late now.
One of them was glass surfing but taping up the background seems to have curved that so i guess thats because of the reflection . I have been advised to upgrade my filter which should come tomorrow. Will definitely get an air stone im sure the honey Gouramis and cory cats i intend to get will benefit from that 2. I have fake plants , 3 moss balls a java fern and Anubis in the tank but anubis has lost 3 of its leaves and java fern looks a bit ropey. Has anyone purchased those full spectrum lights of amazon will also try to very the diet a bit😅
