Something very important to know about them is that they’re VERY sensitive to fluctuations in water parameters, you need to frequently test your water and when you do a water change make sure that the new water you’re putting in is the exact same temp, harness, etc.
Also when you’re putting the new water in, do it slowly so the tetras don’t get shocked. Drip acclimating is a good idea.
This is a super helpful tip.
They're really not, but this is decent advice for ANY fish. Don't let parameters change radically
@@moose8846 That’s true. But in my experience and many others, neons have been much more sensitive than other tetras. At least when you get them cheap from a big chain pet store.
Another tip is getting ich medication whenever you buy them. Every time I have added new neons to my tank an
ich outbreak occurs. Never had this issue with other fish.
OK... mine lived for years and I never did any of that. I kept the temp stable and that was about it.
I'm still nostalgic about my brother's pet tetras. There was one who's spine got all wonky, but he lived. He was called Twist Tail. He lived several years, even surviving after they were all presumed to be dead. For like months, nobody fed them and then it just showed up and lived a while after that.
I feel like I can't fail with this species
Twist Tail......we ❤❤❤❤❤you. 🙂
I love my neon teras, so pretty and so active. They chase each other around my tank all day long and they seem very healthy in only a 10-gallon tank.
How many do you have
@@LilVIDSs Around 10 in a 20 gallons. Some of them are going to be three years old this August.
@@SpaceStickwithSpaceTick neons shouldnt be chasing all day.
@@greygold6214 They are a schooling fish. Very typical. I have had them for 3 years, and bred them.
can I have them as shrimp tankmate ?
I’m looking into getting a small aquarium set up for my first and this video was so helpful. Thank you!
This was fantastic information, thanks heaps. Just got my first tropical tank. only small. 76ltr. After setting the tank and waiting until the water tested good I put 10 neon's in. It's day 5 and they seem happy. I wondered about the food. I'll pick up some brine and a over the back filter cover tomorrow. Thanks again 😁
Love watching these videos - can't wait to see if they start spawning
Always kept neons but never had any luck on breeding them .
Great video!!
Hey how’s the breeding process of your neon tetras going? Can’t wait to see the neon babies 😊
you are the most underrated fish RUclipsr I've ever seen keep up the good work!
Maile Buckley ? What do you mean
This is amazing! Amazing video! I have a neon tetra and a cardinal tetra (I will get more when I can) and they are great fish! Everyone who looks at my centrepiece tank always comments on the cardinal tetra and says it is so beautiful and eye catching! Thanks for this info! You did a really good job! Keep up the amazing work!!!👍
I would be so interested in neon vs cardinal ill search it out
@@toddbigeasy yeah, I did a video on that, if you’d like to check it out! 😄
@@Lazarusthefishboy i will! The tricky nature of these fish is almost scaring me away..I have a new 14 gallon cube I would wait til its aged but still..!!
@@toddbigeasy If you can find Cardinal Tetras, wait a month for the tank to cycle, then the tank will definitely be ready for some Cardinals. They are super hardy and are prone to many diseases, so you should be just fine, as long as you don't keep them with fish 10cm long or bigger. Nothing to worry about, though. Good luck with whatever fish you decide on getting! And if you have any more questions, feel free to ask and I'll try my best to answer them! 🙂
I’ve been rewatching this vid cause I just got some tetras and snails. I forgot gravel lol but got plants 🌱 Thanks for the info!!
Sounds cool! What tetras did you get?
You a little cutie ain't?? Golly! Anywho, I just bought a few today. Very beautiful fish. I really hope they live.
by the way I watch all your videos keep up the good work man I get a lot of my information from you I always double check the facts but you really know what your preaching anyways love it! keep it up!
Hey! i'm starting my first tank setup, hopefully with a group of 5 tetras and 1 betta :) this video was super helpful to me compared to all the other ones i've come across, thank you :)))
Ali’s Empire I don’t recommend a small tank like that Betas are territorial
@@alisson_vcu get a bigger tank if you can. For all of those fish I would try for a 20 gallon. And bettas are a solitary species which should never be kept together (except female sororities by more experienced fish keepers.)
@@alisson_vcu I bet they lasted about a month
@@alisson_vcu Bettas should only be kept in groups of 1, unless it's a breeding tank, for which you will need 1 of the opposite gender.
I have betta and 4 tetra and they live fine for months so far
I got my neons today and I love them
I keep neons with my beta and they are always fun to watch
Can you give an update please. Are they still ok the tetras? I just moved my Betta and 4 tetras together this week and looking at all other comments its not going to work out long term. Betta is going to kill them it seems 😢
This just reminded me to buy 5 more neons to be with my 8! I can't wait to see them school more often and be more peaceful haha
What size is your tank?
@@milowyner It's a divided 29 gallon, their section is about 25 gallons
I have 4 in my 10 gallon and I have one that always gets lost from the rest of the group. I usually find him hiding in the roots of the amazon sword plants.
Maybe he is sick!
Defective unit
I have a 8 gallon tank with real plants 10 fishes. I just put the fish in a bowl and waited 20 minutes then netted them into the tank (Nobody went belly up) They were traumatized) I turned up the heater, feed them and put there night light on. They went to sleep (litterly) I didn't know fish sleep). They felt much better in the morning. Today is day two. They ate and look happy. They chase eachother around the tank and play with eachother. These fish are cool, I like how they interact with eachother.
Going to pickup a 10 gallon tank and some neon tetras to add into my betta
I recommend if you have a Betta to not add any other fish unless your tank is at least 11 gallons
Nooooo! They're gonna eat eachother!
sarasthoughts bettas in the wild eat bugs that have fallen in the water neon tetras are too big for them to eat + they wouldn’t try to eat it and therefore are perfectly fine together (they even live in some of the same areas in the wild)
Hope everything went well for you :)
Be careful, neons can be nippy especially if your betta has very long fins
This guy looks kind of like Rodrick the from Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movies
i cant unsee it
@@anothertemplarchuunibyoude3750 Neither can I lol
Damn i cant unsee it anymore. What have you done?!🤣
Nahh dude

I have a 55 community tank. I have 6 neon tetras in there. I also have an angelfish who dosent even care about the other fish. He won’t even nip at the tiny endler guppy I have in there. Keep in mind, he’s about 5 inches top to bottom.
Add floating plants to minimize water changes. I only do 15% a month. 7 to 10 gallon. Heavy planted
I have a 10 gallon heated tank with a calm betta. Could I get 5/6 of these and add them to the tank? I'm getting smaller snail no matter what
All the research I've done....the bottom line is maybe. I have heard good and bad stories. I think it just depends on your fish. Good luck. I hope it works out.
Thanks for the vid very helpful just started in fish keeping and I planning to get 10 tetras or neon tetras.
I need help. I bought 6 neon tetra and added them to my 10 gallon this morning they all died, but my guppies are all fine. I thought guppies and tetra live in similar water condition?
Neon Tetras are so Beautiful 😍
You are seriously so cute! Thanks for the awesome video
Just one question we in Australia are in metric system, so why does everyone talk sizes in gallons wish people would use litres then i no what size you talking about lol
I’m not too sure, I always try and mention when I remember
i guess gallon is american thing
Virgil Abloh yer but we don’t live in America so why use gallons , i mean everything is in litres here , i understand litres but get confused when talk gallons
@@handofmidas9609 yeah but honestly it would just be easier if everyone used litres
@@christophercasanas386 it would be, but the 3rd world country that has a big army uses small brain units
You have great hair. I’d like to have the neon green ones. Haven’t seen them yet
I'm planning on getting 6 Neon Tetras and Two African Dwarf Frogs in a Fluval Flex 15 Gallon. Good to know Neon Netras eat bloodworms because that is what the frogs can eat as well. Hopefully the frogs get along with the tetras. I've seen a few videos and they seem to live in harmony. I'm going to plant Lucky Bamboo along with some other random plants.
Fantastic guide, thank you. I'm just setting up my first tropical aquarium now. It's 70 litre kit tank for beginners. I just want little Tetras like neons and a few of the others. Question for anybody that knows....because I can only keep about 20 small tetras all up, I was hoping that I could keep smaller schools of each species, say 5 species of 4 each. Would that be OK as long as they're all Tetra's of similar in size?
Question, I have 7 with my male betta and I have like two that I have noticed that are fin nipping my betta. He’s in the process of already growing his fins out. And now these guys just aren’t helping. I have a 30 gallon tall.
Bettas and neons are a no-no. Separate them if you don't want a carnage
sarasthoughts lol this was a month ago
I have 15 Neon Tetras with a Molly in my 10 gallon and they are doing great.
15 neon tetras with a single molly?
Poor molly
Good video.....
from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
Thanks I just got 3 neon tetras today!
Extremely good information, thanks for helping and providing this resource. I will search out more from you i.e. otocinclus or other micro cats! You're adorable btw. Lol
Hi :) Your videos have been very helpful! I've been a fan while, and I'm planning on re-stocking my tank.
I have 2 questions, What type of Anti fungal do you recommend I give to the tetras? and also can I use it on other small fish like platies, sword tails, mollies, danios, and guppies?
I tried adding neon tetras to my male bettas 10 gallon, I read online that bettas do well with tetras. Well not my betta. 😢At first he was cool about it. Then 2 days later he decided to start picking on them and went on a killing spree attacking them, he killed one and injured another one. I swear they do this for sport. I rushed and grabbed my back up tank and I went in for the rescue. Now I am buying another 10 gallon tank tomorrow and I’ll probably add a few more tetras to their school. Poor little guys were so stressed. I added some salts to their tank to help ease them and now they seem much better. Lesson learned. My betta is a one man in his land kinda dude. Lol
Be careful, neons are sensitive to salts.
really loved this video . thank you so much
Neon tetras are definitely my favourite fish
Maybe I missed this but how often should we feed tetras? Twice a day and is the time of day important? Ours didn't seem too hungry in the morning after waking up, but they're ravenous if we feed them at noon.
Another great vid keep it up man !!
Can I put neon tetras in a 5 gallon tank? I watched another fish video that said I could so I am kind of confused.
Idk but I have a 6gallon with 4 and about to add two more. I have had the 4 with normal activity for about a month and a half but I think with two more they will love it. 💘
yeah true neon tetras are very peaceful, i even noticed it stopped one of the fish thats been chasing other fish. thats how they really stick to peace and order lols
This is helpful I have two neon tetra fish !
You need 15-20
I plan to put some neon tetras with my beta fish thanms for tips
What is the average age of Cardinal tetra when purchasing from local pet store?
Thank you for informative videos on neon tetra. I got green neon the other day and in my head, they are small and has tiny mouth so, I was going to feed flakes, powder food or something manageable size for them to eat. However, when I sprinkle flake food on top, they do not come to the top to eat... Any feeding tips on feeding flake food to them? Should I scoop up the tank water, put flakes in and gently pour flake water back into the water? They caught small-ish pellet food intended for cory ..but still the pellet size seems bigger than their mouth.Any feeding tips for green neon, I will be appreciated.Thank you.
You crush the flakes to a smaller size perhaps. My Neon Tetras love the Xtreme Aquatic Foods Nano .5mm sinking pellets. It's kind of pricey but the fish eagerly take to it. This fish food is good for other species as well.
I noticed many tiny snails in your video. Please make a video on how to remove them from our tanks as i have a big problem with them. if not controlled, it will over run our tanks. I've got shrimps and tetras in the same tank. Thanks
New Ahmed I bought a plant a couple weeks ago, today I have about 20+ snails in my 10 gal With some neons and I’m not really sure what to do with all the snails I have
If you buy a couple of assassin snails, they eat those snails as food. Also putting iceberg lettuce floating at the top of the tank - the snails will latch on and you can throw it away.
Setting up a 29g planted Aquarium. How many Neon Tetras do you recommend adding at once? I would like a school of 10-15 but I don't know if it is too much to add that many all at once. They would be the first (and only) fish in the tank.
Hi~ I have a stupid question. Whenever I read information about the number of a specific fish you can keep in your tank, I'm quite confused. For example: 10 neons for a 10 gallon tank, does it mean that I can keep only 10 neons in the tank, or it means 10 neons + some other types of fish? If it is the second, is there any method I can use to calculate the proper number of fish in my tank? Thank you so much~
Can you put glo-fish and beta fish in the same tank?
Well someone liked but can I get an answer!
You could try
as some betta they are not agressive
I need help about how to breed neon Tetras please 😀
I used to have a mix of standard neons and black neons they usually schooled together.
ok who
Really helpful, thank you
Can I have 5 in a five gallon or would that be bad? But I am getting a 10 gallon on Monday so would that be better?
could i possibly put 2 or 3 in a 5 gal?
Get a bigger tank first and cycle it for 6 to 8 weeks.
I am thinking of getting neon tetras great video
You should!
Thanks for advise
Is this best for betta fish community tank
Please reply can I keep 3 in a 5 gallon ASAP
I have a five gallon, I’m soon gonna get around 4-5 I think it will be fine
I would only get odd numbers and starting at 5.
You can get less but they will feel uncomfortable. Only house a single betta or shrimp in a 5 gallon. 5 gallon parameters can swing a lot because of the size & these guys are sensitive to changes. Keep it planted to minimize your water changes. Use floating plants like Salvina. 10$ on eBay and covers the entire surface in 2 months
Get a bigger tank.
Tell me if this is okay = i have a 47 gallon 2.5×2.5 feet height and lenth anf one feet width with 8 pairs of mollys and 6 pairs of guppys and 5 pairs of neon tetras okay or nah?
I read online that tetras munch their way through planted aquariums. That pretty much only Java Fern they leave alone. I haven't bought anything other than an empty tank, and I'm doing a lot of research fist. I'm considering either Neon or Cardinal Tetras, but I don't massively want to limit what plants I can add, due to them eating them all.
On another side, I read that if your fish are eating your plants, float things like lettuce or spinach in the water, and the fish will eat them instead. My issue with this is that fish would encounter neither of those plants in the wild, so why would I feed them to the fish?
Would you be able to provide some clarity into this, as I'm not sure its all adding up for me? Thanks.
My neons are very passive in my planted aquarium, it has an assortment of rotala rotundifolia, crypts, duckweed and labellia cardinalis. Maybe it depends?
I'm getting my very first aquarium in these days and getting informed as much as I can to add these little guys, my hopes is that I won't fuck up to much, been studying their necessities for almost a month now.
Wish me good luck pls
I just got 6 of them. How long does it take for them to color up ? Coloration looks dull.
What do you recommend for quarantine meds??
i just realized that my neon tetras color is so light when my uncle got me them they look very colorful but now the color is just really pale is it because I feed them crush into powder koi food to them? cuz my uncle told me to feed them that I new to fish keeping
I got four of them from Pet supermarket and put them into my 5 gallon aquarium and they made it for a month so I put them in my 20 long with my Bolivian rams and everyone gets along great they are so much fun to keep I’mgoing to try and breed mine
They're great for a community tank, they seem to get along with everybody.
Can I use a four gallon tank?
I have a 10 gallon tank if I get 5 of them and a betta is that fine for them
I think that would be OK
My albino neon tetra has this white spot on his tail and lived for months since we brought him snd he is still alive now
🤔What about depth of the water . Do they like a deeper tank or shorter ?🤔
Ah. Should have medicated the newly added neon tetra when I bought them... completely wipe out all the existing neon tetra after I was gone for a few day. Ick is such a big problem.
Does overdosing on Ick guard kill these fish as well?
So I have an Air Conditioner. It's in Celcius, what temperature should I have to with?
“Tropical wish don’t usually see pirate ships” lol
I have a 80 litters tank with 2 corydoras 4 gupies 6 neon tetras 2 plecos and2 mollys is it overstocked

Im collecting neon tretra information from you
edit:thank you
Hi would you please tell me how to change water for these fish since they are sensitive and nervous? I have a 10 gallon tank
Thanks!
you should do something on kribensis
I should!
What do you do if one gets sick for example swim bladder, since they are social fish do you just treat the whole tank or put it in a quarantine tank alone?
I currently have a tank that I started over a while ago. I used to raise goldfish, but I want to do more of a nano fish tank as there is plenty of room
I have 6 otocinclus in my 60 gallon.
How many would you recommend?
Ome question, what aother paracheirodon species are available in the hobby other than neons, cardinals, and green neons?
My tetras chase eachother , do they attack playfully? I want to make sure they're not hurting eachothe
Im getting 5 of them on thirsday
"They're super chill fish"one tetra chases the other one away from food *facepalm*
One gets scared the other does there schooling fish
I use plastic ornaments just as a hiding place for them and only use ones that resembles wood or rock
Tetras are also like the guppies? That they live with hang on filter without oxygen?
How would neon tetras go with zebra danios?
are they good with like ranchus and orandas?
I have a 10 gallon tank right now with 4 Corydoras that I cannot identify, but I wanted to buy some neon tetras, i want a nice group of them would 10 of them be a good amount for the tank?
My betta is going to die soon bc he has dropsy, so I already have a 3.5 gallon. How many neon tetras can go in a 3.5 gallon or should I get another type of fish
6 is a perfect amount for 23
2-3
I have a 25L/5.5 gallon tank and planning on getting a betta fish but not sure if the tank is big enough for 4-5 neon tetras as well as the betta, is my tank big enough?
You probably already got fish but yes and no if you are meticulous abt ammonia and ph than you most likely can but since tetras are schooling fish even tho they are small they like room to zip around
How many can I get for a 37 gallon tank I have 2 angel fish, 3 Cory catfish, 2 plecos, 2 gouramis, 2 mollies
Do you know if small catfish can go with neon tetra and maybe recommend another species of a small fish
Came for the tetra tips, stayed for the gorgeous guy.
Can they be kept with Denison Barbs? Especially if I have them in the tank first, and Get the Denison Barbs at a smaller size? Like two inches?
I got 12inch x 12inch square tank with anubias nana plants with some bumblebee snails. Is it possible to put some neon tetra here? If yes, how many?
what size is sufficient for a quarantine tank? planning on getting either a 10 or 20 gallon as my main
New to fish keeping my 7 neon have been in my newly cycled tank 8 days i read after the fact that cardinals are considered at better choice. To late now.
One of them was glass surfing but taping up the background seems to have curved that so i guess thats because of the reflection . I have been advised to upgrade my filter which should come tomorrow. Will definitely get an air stone im sure the honey Gouramis and cory cats i intend to get will benefit from that 2. I have fake plants , 3 moss balls a java fern and Anubis in the tank but anubis has lost 3 of its leaves and java fern looks a bit ropey. Has anyone purchased those full spectrum lights of amazon will also try to very the diet a bit😅
