Robert Irwin has faced fierce backlash from his fans after threatening to sue Pauline Hanson. The controversy erupted when he was depicted in an episode of Hanson’s satirical cartoon series, Please Explain.
Irwin’s likeness, alongside beloved character Bluey, appeared in a cartoon titled The State of Queensland. The episode criticized their involvement in a state tourism campaign, featuring scenes where Irwin and Bluey are evicted from a beach over native title issues, have their car stolen by “juvenile delinquents,” and wait six months for healthcare.
In a surprising twist, many of Irwin’s fans have criticized his response to the cartoon. “Mate, get over the cartoon. If South Park can chuck on whoever they want and take the piss, you of all people should be able to take a joke at the expense of the government,” one fan commented. Another added, “Pauline is right, I don’t hear you defending our kangaroos and koalas Robert, they are suffering. The cartoon was spot on, no need for legal action.” A third simply said, “Crying because of a cartoon, grow up.” Yet another wrote, “No Aussie humour anymore. Have a cup of concrete Irwin. Bloody hilarious.”
However, some fans have shown support for Irwin, praising his resemblance to his late father.
The weekend saw news break that Irwin is threatening to sue Hanson. “Your actions constitute defamation and involve the unauthorized and deceptive use of our client’s image,” alleged Irwin’s lawyer, Zoe Naylor, in a cease-and-desist letter to the studio behind the cartoon. Naylor demanded the video be removed from social media, threatening legal action if this is not done by 5 p.m. on Monday. As of publishing, the video remains active on RUclips.
The controversial cartoon was released as part of an international campaign from Tourism and Events Queensland featuring Irwin and Bluey. “Your statements have not only tarnished our client’s reputation but also misled the public, causing significant harm to our client’s brand and image,” Naylor continued. “The unauthorized use of our client’s image in this context is particularly egregious, as it manipulates the truth and misrepresents our client’s personality, values, and beliefs.”
Pauline Hanson’s lawyers have dismissed Irwin’s defamation claims as “nonsensical,” arguing that the video was a “satirical assessment of the various failings of the Queensland State Government” and not defamatory in any way. They described the video as “a humorous critique of that advertisement published primarily for a political purpose.”
“Your clients’ claims of passing off and defamation are so plainly inconsistent as to be nonsensical,” Hanson’s lawyers wrote in a letter to Irwin’s legal team. They added that they are prepared to represent Hanson should Irwin pursue further legal action.
On social media platform X, Hanson reiterated her stance, stating, “I will not be removing the latest episode of Pauline Hanson’s Please Explain. I look forward to the day when Robert and I can have a good laugh over this and turn our focus to making Queensland a better state.”

The cartoon was about the QLD Gov't, not lrwin. Australia Zoo must be struggling financially. This is just a BS money grab. lrwin's mum is from the US, l wonder if it's her idea to sue?
The whole Irwin family is a contrived publicity seeking machine, following Steve's death they built a long term plan to mainatin the family business with the children forced into their current roles. Robert Irwin has done nothing and is a poor substitute for his father, thank God we hear little of them nowdays

Steve Irwin was the national treasure not Robert. Steve would have seen the humour in this cartoon. You will find Pauline has more support than Robert. Robert is not the man his father was. I respect what the Irwin's have done over the years. Robert needs to get over himself. A legacy built on his father's back.
