Well I think all the events of the day,all the near misses that almost got them killed, then ultimately his good friend getting killed and Howard gloating to him about it is what ultimately pushed him over the edge,in the process causing his own hope for his life and the rest of the people to start dimming.
When Anne has tears in her eyes you really feel for her because she along with everyone else are relying on Jack to get them out of there. So if he’s losing it then they too have no hope
When you watch the movie again as an adult you realize just how dire the situation Jack and the passengers was in and how dangerous Howard Payne was as a villain. Sure as a kid, we know it was a bad situation about a bomb being on a bus that would go off if it drops below 50 mph but over the course of the movie, it becomes increasing hopeless for Jack. Jack being frustrated here shows he's on the verge of giving up. He couldn't defuse the bomb, Harry couldn't guide him anymore since he was killed, the bus was losing fueling due to a fuel leak plus had flat tires, he couldn't unload the passengers because he knew Howard to detonate the bomb. Jack literally had his back against the wall here. He was super lucky to find that hidden camera.
This scene is so underrated, not just in this movie but in film in general. You can be an invincible hero who is cool, collected, strong, creative, and intelligent; overcoming so many obstacles and becoming the hope of those around you, but you are not perfect. A single tragedy can be all it takes to emotionally compromise you. But you cannot let it consume you. Without your courage, all others lose their hope. So you must swallow your sadness for the sake of everyone. And keanu's performance was so natural in this scene because even if he wasn't such an amazing actor, he did suffer an actual loss during the filming of this movie, so he had a real experience to channel the raw emotion to the scene. I don't think there has ever been such a great raw performance till the joker movie. What happened to river was a tragedy, but his martyrdom created 2 brilliant actors--his brother and his best friend
Probably. But man,if I had that build there,I damn sure wouldn't stop with the making of the movie. I'd work out everyday and keep that on me permanently!
Honestly...my favorite scene in the entire movie. Its incredibly rare in film to find a moment of characters being completely human...as opposed to being a carefully controlled/crafted version of one. This is one of those rare moments...and its in the middle of a popcorn action flick. Jack quickly processes his friends death, then comes off his rails. Annie, already frightened, begins to lose it too seeing her one pillar of hope, Jack, coming unglued. She then desperately tries to reel him back in....tears streaming down her face. You put a scene like this in 10 other films and i guarantee you 9 out of 10 times Jack will be monologging about what he's gonna do to the villain while Annie tries to espouse inhumanly calm rationale to him....and it wont feel human like this. Simplicity. Properly executed simplicity. There is nothing in film that trumps it
This is not an easy thing to do. He just lost his best friend and has every right to go insane with rage and grief but his professionalism and their situation means he has to bury it.
I always wondered if they knew that that part was coming or if they kept it from them just so they could get real reactions. Sandra Bullock had to have known because she had those lines, but I think the rest of the extras were kept in the dark about this part.
this ladies and gentlemen is exactly what some of us do, in real life, even if people getting all raging mad scares other people around them they must try to understand that this is sometimes the only to let our rage out when bad people and evil people ruin our lives, when they murder people we love, then we must break things, we must cruse at the top of our lungs, even if we hurt ourselves or others even we humans must let it all out, no matter how civilized we are our ancestors savage blood will always be in some of us
This is how i reacted when my best friend drowned in lake michigan and my mom held the news from me until a week later. I was 13 he was 9 and i was with my mom that weekend since my parents were going through a divorce so that just added fuel to an already raging fire of frustration and confusion
this scene became more intense for me when I found out that Keanu's freak out was him letting his emotions over losing his best friend, River Phoenix, while filming this movie.
It's like that scene on the Fresh Prince when Will Smth's fake dad blows him off in the show and Will Smith breaks character within the scene and lets his true feelings out on set about his real dad leaving him. Sometimes an actor will get so into the character role it channels their outside life and emotions onto the set. Sometimes it works out so well that it makes it into the final cut as an "acted" scene - just by pure accident. The director just lets the camera roll and it just works.
@@MrWolfSnack What made it great was Will trying to act cool and blow his dad off, only to see his emotions get the best of him a minute later. Like the late James Avery said, that's fucking acting.

“Great acting” and “Keanu Reeves” aren’t exactly words that are put together often lol

I love how all the acting was so natural here. You could feel Keanu's frustration, and Annie truly cared for him.
When Anne has tears in her eyes you really feel for her because she along with everyone else are relying on Jack to get them out of there. So if he’s losing it then they too have no hope
It had come on set on that day of the scene that his best friend died of an overdose. I can't blame him for being distraught.
