  • Not all tummy bugs are bad. In fact, the bacteria that make up our intestinal microbiome are critical to our overall health. In this episode, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) explores the role of baobab in promoting a healthy microbiome. He shares the story of the Hadza, a hunter gatherer society in Tanzania, whose intestinal microbiome is 20% more diverse than that of an average Westerner. And baobab is one of the foods they eat most regularly. This supports other research that demonstrates the prebiotic effect of the fibre in baobab, creating a favourable environment for the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.
In addition to his plant-hunting activities, Gus also runs a baobab-producing business in Zimbabwe (www.bayoba.biz), and is the current Chair of the African Baobab Alliance (www.africanbaobaballiance.org).

The powdered pulp tastes great, like tart lemon yoghurt or something or similar. Highly recommended. Just make sure the powder doesn’t contain the seeds, as those two don’t combine all to well in terms of flavor.

Great info. I’ve recently been incorporating a couple spoons full with my breakfast.
The only problem I have is it REALLY don’t like the smell or taste. Reminds me of seafood (I love seafood, just not powdered seafood on my breakfast). But I’m willing to soldier through if there’s potential for such good benefits.

Sorry to hear that. Most people are surprised at how much more tasty baobab is than the other superfoods. You definitely wouldn't be including two spoons of moringa in your breakfast, for example. That would be totally unpalatable, whereas baobab is actually pretty decent. But if you don't like the flavour, try mixing it with water, lemon and ginger as a drink. You can also add a bit of honey if you have a sweeter tooth.
