Mario Party DS is a bittersweet game for me. It is one of the games that I personally have played the most of, and it has a lot of really neat, fun bits of side content that stand out, especially since this game is on a handheld and not a console like the other Mario Party games. However, Mario Party DS is the last game to be developed by Hudson Soft, the original developer of this series before they would inevitably pass this series on to its new developer, ND Cube. So, this Mario Party DS marks the end of an era for the series - but how does Mario Party DS fare when compared to its console counterparts? Well, find out in today's episode of Mark's Rec Room: the long-awaited Mario Party DS retrospective. Thanks so much for watching these videos, it's really been cool getting to gush about these games that have been a huge part of my multiplayer gaming experiences. This series is planned to continue with the ND Cube games, but honestly, those videos will likely take some time because I think that they'll need to be structured differently since those games are radically different from the Hudson Mario Parties, and I'm not sure exactly how I want to tackle them just yet. Rest assured, though, the "finale" in the title is just meant to signify the finale of the Hudson era. Thanks for reading this, if anybody actually reads this. Comment your favorite Mario Party board of all time in the comments if you actually read all this, lol

I remember playing Mario Party DS a ton back in my youth. It was easily one of my most played games in the series, though that can obviously be contributed to it being the only "true" portable Mario Party experience for the longest time. I unfortunately never got to play it in multiplayer, so those two player modes you showed off I didn't even know existed until now. But that didn't change how much I adored coming back to this one again and again. Even today, it's hard for me to think of anything I find super wrong with it given that its quality is pretty consistent, though there probably isn't much reason to come back to it outside of novelty purposes. I definitely agree with Camera Shy being the best minigame here, though I also remember Dust Buddies, Raft Riot, Soap Surfers, Hedge Honcho, Cyber Scamper, Domino Effect, Goomba Wrangler, and Globe Gunners very fondly. And yes, I did read the description, and I'll proudly tell you that Woody Woods is peak chaos. Thanks so much for doing this series over the past two years. It's been a really fun ride going through memory lane (haha Mario Party 6 minigame reference lol so epic) while also providing some solid critique along the way. I'm wishing you the best of luck for when you get to the NDcube titles. You're gonna need it. We should hop on a round or two sometime. :)

@@marksrecroom BPM definitely has one of the best presentations out of all the boards in the series, and I definitely feel like it captures the spirit of Mario Party quite well. Both the Wheel of Wonder & the Chests of Chance can be timed to land on what you want, it can be difficult to pull off which definitely balances them both out quite well. I get your main criticism of the boards being a bit smaller than the console ones, but, as you already said, it makes sense for a handheld entry. Not to mention this was the Mario Party game I grew up with...

imo the star pipe isnt as big of an issue to me due to the economy of DS. having one player buy a single star and take a giant lead is not as fun as constantly competing for stars. you keep going back and forth to "stars are so powerful, why are they handed out for free" and "theres so many stars one star is worthless". in older games, its just a game of trading the same star back and forth so this is very refreshing.
in older MP games i always steamrolled everyone since im good at minigames. buying one star gave me such an advantage it was no fun. and since i always won minigames, even if my friends got a star, stealing it was no problem. but in DS, i actually lost to my sister many times despite her being kinda bad at games and her not really being interested in games. its just more accessible if you have friends that arent gamers and i think that really made it much more fun to me since my friends were never gamers.
i always believed coins in older games had way too much power. you can buy stars, steal stars, get one free star after the game, etc. but in DS, due to the economy, this problem is not as big of an issue anymore.

I have some opinions on the Mario Party DS boards, but here is my ranking:
    5. Kamek's Library
The board being separate into two smaller boards is one aspect that I dislike. Another is that Kamek only uses 2 spells numbered 8 and 88. I get that it's a small cartridge but a little more variety in spells would have been nice. And on the topic of Kamek, he is the only boss battle that has an extra challenge that players have to deal with before facing him.
    4. Toadette's Music Room
This is an okay board. Not a big fan of the 5th note charging 30 coins for a star instead of 25. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot that I like or dislike.
    3. Wiggler's Garden
A fair board to start the story with, and isn't too punishing to new players.
    2. Bowser's Pinball Machine
It's the aesthetic of the board that gets it this high. Love the Chest of Chance and the Wheel of Wonder, even if they can frustrate players. Bowser controls the right flipper and plunger while Bowser Jr controls the left flipper.
    1. DK's Stone Statue
The only board with a designated star space instead of stars appearing and reappearing on random blue spaces when they are collected. The beehive and tri-coloured vines were good features.

Yay, a new Mario Party video!
I used to play Mario Party DS with my twin sister all the time and we had so much fun. But nowadays, I think I've come to the same conclusion that you have; despite how hard it tries, playing Mario Party on a handheld just won't be as good as on a home console. With that said, it's definitely the best handheld Mario Party (unless you count Superstars as a handheld game, but even then that's debatable).
Keep up the good work! And I'm glad you gave Rocket Rascals the credit it deserves, it's my favorite minigame mode in the whole series.

Mario party DS holds a special place in my heart as being the game i played all the time on the bus to highschool with all the other kids. They introduced me to the game and it made me want the game for myself. Download play allowed me to join everyone on the fun. Truly i was lucky to be able to enjoy 3-4 player games with other people consistantly. I've never had a game where i was able to play with others for so long. The DS was truly special.
I should point out that because we played on a bus the vibration of the engines would activate the mic rather unpredictably, which made shortfuse more chaotic and tense. It would often fill the bus with screams and laughter hoping to not get blown up but also wanting the noise to push them just that much further (you can tell at least on one occasion, one of the kids made noise to screw over the other player.) Best days of my school time. Short fuse was unironically a blast to play with so many people (in harsh conditions no less) so i dont care what you say, that game's a 10.

@@nickdegugs7190 absolutely. Always loved the "every man for himself" mentality that Mario party, Mario kart, smash bros. had. Cramming everyone into a car made no sense. Though I never played any of the games in between, I feel like the charm of Mario party sorta died with the DS game. I have one of the party games for the switch, and though it ditched the cars thankfully, I feel like it's lost a lot of its wittiness and charm. If I recall correctly, it's Mario Party Superstars. It's just a callback to some older boards, but it's also lacking any real storyline. I played it for an hour or two with my brother and dropped it because I wasn't invested at all.

Superstars forever enrages me cause they brought back so many minigames that nobody ever wanted to see again, and also butchered Space Land (one of the best boards in the series, mechanically speaking) by having the police cars chase you to a corner of the map and getting you stuck for half the fuckin game with no option for escape but to buy a skeleton key and hope to god nobody lands on a happening space, where in the original it forced everyone onto the diagonal path and made it a frantic dash to avoid getting hit by the coin ray. why they did that will forever be inexplicable to me

I don't think star pipes are as bad as you made them out to be. They don't start appearing until turn 6, meaning you can use at most three. Additionally, the price of three pipes and stars is 105 total, which isn't guaranteed in this economy. Plus, the existence of the Snag Bag slightly keeps them in check.
I won't pretend that it's a great item, but it doesn't split the game in half.

it’s “Museum” from Sonic Gems collection! the song titles are at the top left corner throughout the video so if you find another one you like you can check the name there!

Mario party DS is actually the third hand held game in the series. The prior two games were Mario party advance, and Mario party e.

Now if you do look at the NDcube Mario Parties, please make sure to make some research on who actually worked on those games (spoilers, a majority of NDcube devs are ex-Hudson devs, so the new direction for the series isn't a case of new blood ruining everything)

I really dislike duels in this game. They're absurd swings that can happen a lot in a match, made worse when it's a match that has two stars at stake when the other player risks nothing. I also think the boss minigames are pretty boring and I don't like the cute little descriptions and badges are very fun unlockables. The boards are fun but they have size issues, Stone Statue has serious scaling issues because stars can be gotten in waves, made astronomically worse when the cost drops to 5 coins.
I think the minigame select is particularly good, even with a few duds like that one spotlight dance one. The controls feel pretty good and the creativity is strong. I think the game's about as good as a DS Mario Party can be, having an insane value for a single cart (very little loading past the first bootup!) and some fun side minigames. It unfortunately suffers from some crunchy audio too, but given what it's on it's a pretty good game that has some really strange decisions like duels and the shop.

Analyzing as a casual Mario Party game, I think MPDS is a serviceable game that it is interesting and I believe there are a lot of great things to be found here, like the minigames and even for solo players with the simple but effective Story mode, but I still inferior to the ones in Mario Party 3 and 9. However as someone that put 40+ hours to the game trying to unlock everything in the gallery, having to grind for Party Points and replaying boards for Board features its a pain in the ass and makes me dislike the game considerably. Also The minigame modes, except for Rocket Rascals are the same exact modes seen in other MP games but blander, Triangle Twisters sucks (Other Throwback Puzzles like Stick n Spin and Piece Out are cool though) and the boards are just fine, nothing greati. Its definitely not in my Top 5 Mario Party games thats for sure.
