Great video👍🏻 Had 6 trees myself, out of 100seeds. Used the sandpaper methods, used the boiling water methods. In summary I have to say growing Baobab from seed is like a self-fulfilment especially when you look at your trees keep growing new leaves and getting taller everyday😊
Just clip the one side of the seed till you reach the white layer soak for 20 minutes then place into a damp cloth put in the lunch box for 2 days and youl find roots .....living in botswana that's how I root my seeds and it easy and works like magic ....no need to soak for days
I had one growing up to a foot high in a pot, indoors, but it lost all it's leaves later in the year. I'm guessin dormancy. I thought it had died but maybe not darn it! Is it possible they can loose all the leaves but then regrow in the spring of the year?
@@2liter8 I would say that this is even preferable. That way you can put it on a cool spot that doesn't need to be bright and you don't have to water it. You also don't have to worry about leggy growth due to lack of light.
That’s a good idea. I’ve never been able to get a whole fruit before but it sounds like that would mimic a natural event of a grassfire. Thanks for sharing
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener yes it actually also mimics the process when the fruit is eaten by elephant and is digested in its gastrointestinal system along with the pulp which is acidic, helping soften the hard shell and later with rain and sun germinating it outside.
Hey Dave thanks for sharing I would love to plant a Baobab tree any updates in your trees ? I just see this video idk if you have a 2nd with the tree update thanks
Right now it’s dormant with no leaves. This summer, 2024. I will make an update. Several people want to see how it’s doing so check back then.. thanks for your interest
@@DaveTheHillsideGardenerif you do go in winter. Brutally hot up where they grow even in mid winter. I'm germinating a bunch of them at the moment. Quick soak with really hot water and they seem to geminate well. Queensland has a bottle tree which has some similarities although normally its a lot smaller and is frost tolerant.
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener I brought back some seeds from the canary islands and Im trying to grow it in doors in the Uk. Im quite good with plants but it seems to be struggling now. Im at a loss as to what to do
@cammi9948 I would think temperature may be an issue. Do you have a heat pad for them? Some seeds need a cold period too in order to break dormancy. If you have several seeds maybe try different methods and see what works ? Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
I just let it dry out then water again. They are succulent in nature and can store water pretty well. In the winter just don’t water at all and let it go dormant and lose its leaves and in spring add some water and it will start to grow again.
It’s a tree that will store water for long periods of drought. But it’s not a cactus. It does need plenty of sun and moister to thrive. In winter it will go dormant and drop all of its leaves. Mine is just starting to put on new growth this spring.
Don't do this just soak seeds in boiling water leave in the water for 24 to 48 hours plant in soil. I did this and had almost 100% germination. I had seeds from Kimberley Western Australia.
@SpokenRizz11 yes we his summer. It’s growing slow and was late to break dormancy so I’m gonna do an end of summer update to capture all the seasons growth. Thanks for your interest
I got them on Etsy. But the link is Californiabaobabs.com. I think they may be currently out of stock but I can say they are top quality so keep checking

They are difficult to germinate for sure and even more difficult to keep alive but like you said it’s so cool to watch them grow

@2liter8 that's normal for baobabs
Great tips for growing super cool trees!
Yes they are sooo coool
Excellent video!! Thank you very much ❤❤
Thanks. I’m going to make an update soon on the progress
Wow ! Definitely trying it. Thanks 🙏🏾 for tips.
Good luck!!
If you can get hold of the fruit then soaking the seeds with the pulp itself softens the hard shell and can be peeled easily. Just my two cents

Thanks for sharing. I will try this method this month in Ghana 🇬🇭
I hope you have success. Let me know if it works for you
Thanks! In definitely going to try
Good luck. It’s a fun project

I'm definitely going to get some. I want to make a bonsai out of it.
That’s my plan
We have amazing Baobab trees in Australia!
Simply glorious!
That would be amazing to see in person!

How are they doing
Just waking up from winter dormancy I’ll do a follow up this spring when it is fully going again
Have you ever planted Mouringa Drouhardii
I have not, but looking at the pictures it looks awesome. I’m definitely gonna try it out! Thanks for the suggestions

@@DaveTheHillsideGardener I dont have a pad. It has started to grow. Its just now stuck and being a little slow. Some leaves fine some crumbling
@cammi9948 it does need good sunlight. Perhaps a grow light would help.
Hello. How to grow them after they get leaves out ? How much watering ?

how much water does it need? you did mention how we take care of it bro

I've seen elsewhere using chlorhydric acid (HCl) to simulate the digestive system of elephant before soaking in water
That’s pretty interesting
thx
Welcome
Where did u buy them at ?
Californiabaobabs.com. Or just search on Etsy
Thank you out of stock
@drewhankey4078 definitely keep them in mind. I had very good results with them.
Seeds from my countrry! We call them buyu(singular) or mabuyu(plural) and the tree mbuyu
That’s so cool to learn! Thanks for the info.

PLEASE KEEP US POSTED ON YOUR BAOBOB SEED, I SUBSCRIBED
Will do. It’s dormant now for winter and dropped all its leaves so in spring when it wakes up I sure will. 🙏

I want to be the first in Pennsylvania to grow an African tree in my backyard
You will have to bring it inside. They won’t survive our winters unfortunately
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener
Unfortunately I will prove that wrong it will survive
Please make an update video it’s been 6 months!
I plan to in about May when it starts to grow again. It’s basically a dormant stick still but still alive.
