There is some confusion between the Salado battle and the Aljubarrota battle. In Alberto Sampaio Museam there is a a wood cover by silver triptic that was brought to Aljubarrota battle by the Spanish. To pray in the end of the battle to thanks the victory. But they lose... Salado battle was against the Moors, and Portuguese and Spanish did fight toghether

Afonso the Great, the Founder and the Conquer. Founded Portugal with the help of the Knights Templar, he battled with his Mother, Teresa of Castile.
Effectively making Portugal the First Templar Nation.
There is an Excellent Book by Freddy Silva called First Templar Nation.
    This barely scratches the surface.
Portugal is a gold mine if you wish to research it.

The father of D. Afonso I was not a king, he was a count. Portucale was not a kingdom on its own, it was a county of the Kingdom of Leon . It was D. Afonso Henriques who declared independence from the Kingdom of Leon, declared the county as a kingdom and thereby became the first king. Of course, the whole story was a LOT more complicated than this, it involved numerous battles and political "games".

The first Count of Portucale was Vímara Peres 868 - 873. His statue is in the city of Porto next to the Sé church. Vímara is the Count that founded Guimarães, Guimarães ( Vimaranis ) comes from his name, that's why the inhabitants of that city are called Vimarenses.

You do more for Portugal than most of our politicians! The Braga and Guimaraes rivalry is not only about football, it is actually dated a "few decades" back and it was mainly about the ownership of portions of land dividing both cities. Football wise, it is the best game to watch, but if you do, please stay on the Home stand on both stadiums. Don't forget to drop by Braga, it is a 2000 year old city, unfortunately one day wouldn't be enough to enjoy the city to its fullest. Other places to visit, if you haven't, Ponte de Lima, Barcelos, Ponte da Barca, Arcos Valdevez, Viana do Castelo, Geres, in all honesty the whole Minho (North and South side of Minho) its a very different experience from any other part of Portugal, each piece of Portugal represents a stage of our history and Minho tends to represent the beginning stage of our Country! Thank you for showing Portugal to everyone, you are great!

Regarding the origin of the name "Portucale" (from where the name "Portugal" comes from), there are several theories but none is actually proven. One thing seems certain - "Portucale" comes from "Portus Cale" but, whereas the meaning of "Portus" is more or less obvious, the meaning of "Cale" is much more debated and cloudy. Some say it comes from the greek word for "beautiful", as you said, others say it comes from the latin word for "hot", but the main theory nowadays (as far as I know) is that it comes from the name of an old celtic town in the region named after the caltic goddess Caileach (or similar, I'm paraphrasing). There are even more theories about the meaning of "Cale", several connected to the celtic origins of the northern Portugal.

    • @gabkoost
      @gabkoost 4 года назад +2

Romans called the entire tribes of the Northwest Callaicos. The hill fort culture is extremely easily to identify and nowhere else is there anything similar.
The theory that Porto was the Port of Cale (land of the Callaicos) is very easily understandable.
And from them came the name Gallaecia, Galiza and Galehos. Which are the real names of Portugal and the Portuguese people as the Lusitânians have nothing to do with the creation of the nation or its culture as they didn't even existed at the time.

Later on in 1385, after the King defeated the Castilian in Aljubarrota he went on pilgrimage to that Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. And supporters of Vitoria are really crazy and known for being really crazy lol. And yes the Minho Derby (Braga vs Vitória) is a mother fucking game. Really watch out there lol

D.A.Henriques was the first king of Portugal. His father wasn't a king. He was a Count. The Count of Portucale. Portucale was a county part of the Kingdom of Galicia. As rivalries surged between powerhouses in the historical kingdom of Galicia (who ethnically dates back to celtic times as the pre Roman Hill fort culture shows and the romans and Sueves all accepted as an administrative region of its own), the county of Portucale was explicitly mentioned by his New name thus paving the intentions of separatism that would be founded by medieval efforts to expel the moors from the south.
Portucale actually means ' The port of Cale'. When Roman's got to the Douro they faced off against the HILL fort culture people (you missed citânia de Briteiros 7km from Guimarães who is a pearl of European archeology). The local hill fort is believed to have been named Cale.
Therefore, the people from the Douro Valley to the northern shores of Galicia became known as Callaicos.
This name is at the origin of Gallaecia (latin name of this Roman province) and later became Galicia.
The inhabitants of modern day Galicia actually are the ones baring the real name of Portugal. The term 'Galegos' sadly became pejorative when wars between Portugal and the kingdom of Galicia, and later Spain, started roaring.

@Aaron Marquees Cailleach = Celtic Goddess also the name of the area around Porto in pre-roman and after. Giving the name of Callaecia.
Callaecia became Gallaecia later on, same as Portucale and Portugal.
Porto was the capital of the Celtic tribes in Callaecia (or in this case the most important city for the Celts) the Celtic tribe that was in Porto was the Dragani (meaning the dragon people) also giving the F.C. Porto its logo the dragon. Porto = Portus and and Cale = Callaecia or more modern time Gal = Gallaecia.

    D. Afonso Henriques wasn't baptized in Guimarães. He were baptized in Braga. That's why from that time on all the eldest sons of the kings of Portugal were baptized in Braga. The reason is that Braga is capital of the archbishop and also the oldest archbishop of the Iberian Peninsula that were founded in the year 44 ac. Braga were in that time the capital of region of Galecia that were part of the Roman Empire. So I hope one of these days you will have the chance to visit us in Braga. And if it possible I have the great pleasure to invite you both to see Braga vs Guimarães and have a chat about the History of Portugal and Braga that is the oldest city of Portugal Portugal founded more than 2000 years ago.
