  • Quick video talking through likes and dislikes of the Leatt 5.5 Flexlock boots, especially when compared to my previous favorite, the Alpinestars Tech 7.
    Sorry about the camera angle; it came out a little more wonky than I was expecting. Gets the point across though.
    This is my third pair, and I'm an Open A rider locally and Open B at GNCC and other national series. I do not ride moto, though I do race in the desert.

    Running Sidi TA 3s, recreational ride and racing in hare scrambles and they have held up for years and hundreds of hours. The sole is starting to show some wear and there is a little play in the hinge point, same spot where you talk about the flange on the 5.5 pulling through. I did rip a toe cap off but just reset it and screwed it back in, no issues.

    Good review ! Just spend the money and get the Gaerne SG 12' s. They will last at least twice as long ! They have a wide large toe box for wide feet. The ankle area is unbelievable with memory foam that locks even the narrower ankles in comfort with no heel float . 60% of all the World Championship Enduro riders wear them. I always used Alpinestars for 15 years, then got the Gaerne and will never go back ! Also, clean your boots with a pressure washer after each ride and clean them. The dirt and mud if left on...dries out the rubber and plastic and leather.

    • @DmitriyAdv
      @DmitriyAdv Год назад +1

      I agree. I usually get 200 hours of a Gaerne sole... then put another sole on for $100 and keep riding. I have 300-400 hour SG12's that look better than the 60 hour Leatts in the video.

    Thanks for sharing your experiences. I use Tech 7's too and they are not the safest boots (I have a pair of Gaerne SG 12's which are much safer) but what annoys me most is that they let water through like flip flops. what are your experiences? Are the Leatt's water proof?

    • @gearheadE30
      @gearheadE30  2 года назад +3

      The Leatts are definitely not waterproof. I'd put them similar to Tech 7s in that regard where they do okay when they are new, but if you put your foot down in a muddy rut, you're probably going to have a wet foot.

      Steve. The only way you’re gonna get a fully waterproof boot is to buy tech 7 enduro drystars. I have been wearing the tech 7 enduros and regular tech 7s before those for probably the last 4-5 pairs of boots I’ve had. Just switched to a sidi, but all that’s besides the point. Another thing I switched to was over the boot pants. All I ride is single track/hard enduro and the over the boot pants work wonders in keeping your feet dry. Unless you just step ankle deep in water they’ll keep you dry.

      I'm not sure I can really help with your specific size, all I have to go on is that I usually am a 10.5 or 11, and the 11 fits my feet great. I would probably go with a 12 and just wear thicker socks or tighten the straps more. Much harder to make a boot that's too small fit.

    Have you experienced any clicking or popping on the outside hinge? I tried on a few different pairs of the 5.5 and they all had the same pop when you flex your shin towards your toes. I could replicate it with the book off as well. 2 sections of the plastic hinge was popping out of alignment.

    • @gearheadE30
      @gearheadE30  Год назад +1

      I have not had any popping or clicking that I've noticed since I added some spacers behind the red insert in the hinge to prevent it from popping out of the trapezoid it sits in. (around 7:10 in the video). When I made this video, I hadn't come up with a fix yet. With the spacer/washer behind it, they don't pop out anymore and the boot overall feels quite a bit more stable.

      Aside from wearing the soles out fairly quickly, yes I am a fan and keep buying more of them. I only have experience with C and X frames from Leatt. Some friends have CTI and Pods that they really like and say fit a bit better/may have better build quality, but the price point is totally different. I did not care for C frames due to the lack of knee impact protection. I really like the X frames and have had a few pairs as I eventually wear the hinges out after several hundred hours, which I consider normal.

    • @gearheadE30

      I don't have them side by side to compare anymore, but I have a fairly wide forefoot and narrow heel. I didn't have problems with either boot pinching the front of my foot, but I would say the Leatt probably has a little more space. The Tech 7s hold my heel better when new, but over time the padding compresses and they end up a little loose on the heel.

    • @gearheadE30
      @gearheadE30  2 года назад +3

      As far as I know, the only difference is the sole. The moto boot doesn't really have any tread (doesn't catch on the pegs, a bit more durable) where the enduro boot has tread more like a work boot, which would be better for walking/pushing/paddling. I've never tried the enduro boot.
