- I just moved out of my house and as I removed the years of pictures, shelves, etc. I was left with some awful looking walls. I had a ton of nail holes, ripped drywall and so many other imperfections that I wanted to fix before I left. So I decided to make this video for anyone that might be in a similar situation. If you want to get your security deposit back, want to prep a room for paint or you just want to make your walls a little nicer looking, I hope this video helps you out.
If you have any bigger holes than the one's shown, I have another video showing you 10 ways to patch holes. If you have any questions on these patches or other ones, let me know in the comments.
I have tons of other videos on patching walls, muding and taping drywall and drywall installation, so if you need some more help on your walls, make sure to go check them out!

You are the Mr Rogers and/or Bob Ross of home repair. 🥰
Here's a tip I learned from someone who did drywall for years: He would do a fast survey of all the spots that needed to be touched up and would circle them lightly with a carpenter's pencil in a wide enough circle that it won't be completely covered by mud and then would patch everything he marked. When he'd come back a day or several later he knew where all the spots were by the pencil mark. He'd sand, which would lighten the pencil mark so he knew he'd hit them all. Any second touch ups would be circled again. Lather, rinse, repeat. He would interleave multiple jobsites while waiting on others to dry and sometimes he wouldn't get back to a jobsite for a couple of weeks depending on what was going on at the site. This tip increase his productivity so he didn't have to take the time to hunt for the patches and helped to insure none were missed.
Sixty years of my life in one short video. Everything you need to know
Whoever gets this house is going to have a diary of every square inch. Lucky.
This! 👆🏾🍀
I wish you were my neighbor. I need to learn all about remodeling and fixing.
That FibaFuse drywall tape. Where has that been all my life. Shame on you HomeDepot for not carrying it.
That stuff was seriously impressive.
Just bought a house and am having to fix all of these things. Best timing ever for a video
I can't wait to see what you do in the new house.
Matt is pumping out the content. We reaping the benefits!
Congrats on your new house! I'm really looking forward to lots more great content!!
Thank you for taking us one step at a time
I like using the back of the screwdriver or a 5 in 1 to push in a small divot around the hole.
My favorite color, pink ❤I learned what a trowel is. Thanks ❤
Someone's going to enjoy the fruits of your labor...
And pay the appreciation cost for it, too.
You sir, do excellent work!
Door knob dent. Left over tile mastic works great. Super solid patch.
Tile mastic perfect for that crack under the window -. A homemade v notcher for that crack. Take a manual v shaped bottle opener / can opener. Grind the v to sharpen it …. Smooth walls easy patches. Show us how to blend into textured wall. I found what works for me is a brush dipped in the mud and dab it…
Paint storage I use old 1 gallon milk jugs. Easy pour out amount needed. U can see color tgru jug. No rusty cans / lids that won’t seal. Jug use the screw on caps not snap on. Easy shake up mix settled paint
Another tip your drywall premix pail will grow mold on top of it sits long enough. Store the pail upside down The mud sitting on the lid eliminates any air leaks to start mold The void in the top mud to bottom of pail is air tight so no mold grows on top of the mud
What do you mean, ignore the window sill? Ha ha
Isn't that part of getting a deposit back? I know...
it was all about the walls!
You're a very good home owner to leave it better than just "move in ready". I love the bloopers.
Anxious to see you make your new house your home.
Guess you will have to wait to see if I made a video about it... 😉
Thank you! Can’t wait for new episodes of the new house!
The Fixer 👍
This was a GREAT tutorial! You explained in detail how to go about repairing different drywall issues. As a matter of fact I’m dealing with this now. And I’m feeling a lot more confident in tackling my repairs! Thanks 😊
It's OK to dry brush the whole wall if needed.
Besides labeling the can for the room/location, also date it.
Before putting lid on cover with saran wrap, then lid to get a good air seal, so paint does not cure in the can 🤓
For a quick patch you can use the 45 or 90 minute muds if you use hot water for mixing, it speeds up the curing process.
Try the volcano trick with the easy sand and pour the water in the hole, your subscribers will thank you.. Got it from Home Renovision. Thanks for sharing, can't wait to see the new projects.
My dog tears up the door trim he's so excited for me to open the back door for him to go out, that I replaced it but kept the old torn up trim and just placed it over the new trim so now he just scratches that and the new one underneath is unscathed. That way when I move out I just remove it and no one is the wiser.
In the first ones, instead of hammer to dimple it use the back of the screw driver used to take the screw out. Less aggressive and smooth edges.
Thank you for all of the patching information. It is very helpful.
Loved this!!! This was so helpful to see the different techniques and products. Gives me so much confidence to make corrections to my walls. Thank you.
My kids are so dang wild that a door stop does no good. I finally just put those circle, raised plastic doorknob stops at every door in my house. If you keep them clean from scuffs once a week or so, they look decent on the wall because you know it's either you have that or a hole in the wall 🥴
I call it my Pink Lady. Love it bc I like redecorating but hate the holes I make. 😊
This was very helpful! I foolishly attempted to remove painted-over wallpaper in my dining room and there are few spots that went down to the drywall paper. Okay most of it, it was most of the wall. I need to go find that primer in a can now.
Thanks for a great video, Matt. 👍 😊
Instead of removing the mounting hardware I installed in my past rental, I decided I would 'pre-mount picture hanging hardware for the next renter' to enhance their move-in experience.
funny to think back when you redid the kitchen you were probs already thinking of resell value, meanwhile i was like "oh what a nice kitchen for you to have!" lol
looking at this and questioning if i can finally get myself to fix a couple cracks in two areas that have been there like... way too long, though funny it is that i might end up fixing something in our family's house and not my dad because to say he's impatient is putting it lightly lmao
Great job.
This is a very good video ❤❤❤ thanks
The problem I run into with filling small holes is air. The patch bubbles out. Sanding to make it flat causes the patch to fall out. I am not talking about over sanding. I have tried various ideas to alleviate this problem to no avail.
With anchors, I have found a razor knife can quickly and easily cut the flange of the anchor. The anchor can then fall inside the wall where it will be anyway. At any rate, the will no extra damage or larger area to repair.
You're THE BEST
I sure you get a great price for your home. The new owners will be getting a fantastic house.
How'd you get so smart in so few years? I enjoy all your videos. Good luck with your move.
Hey bro love your technique and the way you describe it good job 👍🏽
"Whatever these little nicks are."
Those ar Koda claw marks. 😆
ty!
I was wrong he didn’t eat a shoe. He ate a window. Lol
you can also punch those anchors into the wall and fill , lot better.
AS for the bigger ones you don't want to leave in because sparkle isn't made to stick to plastic and will eventually fall off the area (Screw POP) of the plastic Achor.
Don't use the hammer technique, because all you are doing is smashing the material back into the hole and it causes filling the hole to be inaccurate.
I don’t have screw pops but I do have nail pops. I think I remember a video, maybe not yours, that said to put a screw in right next to the nail so it covers part of the nail head. After watching this, I don’t know if that would work or not. 🤷🏼♀️
Blue top container is significantly lighter than the green.
I was a master painter and renovator for many moons. Everything you showed was something that I did, except for two things.
Your feathering is fine for corners, or around light switches, with a dry brush. Myself, I used a 4” or 6” low nat roller and dry rolled, though for itty bitty spots, would apply paint with a brush first. This always helped blend into a rolled wall much more gooder.
As for Durabond 90, I would recommend new DIYs to stay away from it for such a thin job. Great as you say for first layer of a small “new” tape job,and really goes nice and hard, and the clincher for new DIY. Do a lousy application, and you will become a truck driver, cursing to hell and back on that ride. Though, a slightly damp sponge can help to lower those ridges of bad spreading. This D 90, is also good for first fill layer of deep holes, and nothing else, as sanding is a complete bitch. For a new DIY, stick to an easy sandable product in the time of any of 20/45/90, to keep your frustration down.
Otherwise, enjoyed watching this, as it was a reminisce of part of my life for my clients, and occasionally for myself.
Awesome video
This may sound stupid, but… can cracks in the drywall be related to the foundation?
Thanks? 💜✌🏼🙋🏼♀️
Yes. But if they're along a tape joint, it's probably just a bad tape job. This goes doubly if it is a tract house because the tapers work fast on those and use tools that apply mud automatically.
8:47 I would probably just use dry wall mud for that instance. Especially since that dry sand stuff and a timer on it going hard would not be good for me.
Question: What is the correct way to patch protruding drywall corners? Mine has some nicks in them, but I don’t know the best way to fill them in and get a nice finish on the corner again.
I was always told to wash off the sanding dust with a sponge before you paint… is washing it off necessary?
I used that pink stuff when I moved in to patch a hole and every animal in my house went right for it. It must have something in it that appeals to the animal nose. My dogs ended up chewing it out of the wall, and I had to go back to regular joint compound.
I guess that's one reason people still use wallpaper, covers up a lot of problems.
I have wood paneling painted white. Should I use the same stuff??
What about acrylics paint peeled, but the drywall is intact how could it be level to paint again
I've got a question so when you were fixing the slight dent in your wall where the doorknob created from opening the door..if someone has a huge whole in their wall from the doorknob repeatedly banging into would you say just to take that part and apply new drywall? We have two we need to repair
So...when's the B'Roll Album coming out? XD
Do you have to sand between coats or just at the finish?
"Smooth as butta"
were you fixing up this house because you knew eventually you were moving into another bigger one? and sorry if im asking again but do you still own that house and just renting it out?
The next bob ross
🙏😁
I missed the reason for this
Use the handle of the knife to press in the screw holes, not a hammer please.
for the algo
The worst part of your videos...sitting thru 95% of it to get to the B rolllllll...lol .
Love your vids man
Where is your mud pan? Mixing on d/w?🤣
Half of my tools were at the new house. Plus I just threw the drywall away when I was done. No cleaning. 🤣
Mr Natural says “the right tool for the right job”.😁
Just want to say - love the new house
Just wondering if you are going to go green with your power?
Solar off grid, heat pump , or something else
Underfloor heating, Evac
Would be very interested to watch you do that 10:18
I would never do that.
You might mention, that oil-based primer can be painted over with latex paint. However, oil-based paint cannot, as the latex will not stick well and peel off.
You don't know how bad I needed this video. I learned something in literally every shot, including to tape some paper under the drywall, so I don't need to vaccum. Thank you for your honesty about the rooms you redid and explaining so well the what and why. None of the products are exceptionally expensive so it doesn't feel like you're an add. This whole video had the "hey buddy, let me show you some tricks I've learned" and I love it. This is the epitomy of what makes America such a great country. People like yourself sharing honest and simple to understand tricks. Much appreciated. Subscribed.
This is great to hear. So happy to help. Comments like this are the reason I make these videos!
Fixing holes in walls, from pinholes to a couple feet across, has never been a problem for me. It's getting the spray-on orange-peel texture to not look like shit that appears to be beyond my capabilities.
You might want to train your dog to not be so excited around the mailman...the eps of It's Me Or The Dog on RUclips show how it's possible
Lacquer ( as in clear nail polish) or shellac will seal that torn drywall paper quickly. Then all you need to do is paint.
This timely for me. I have all of the above to fix in my house. Good info. Thanks.
Çan joint compound be used on plaster walls?
Yes!
👍
What color is that in one of the bedrooms 33:10? I'm sure you mentioned it when you first remodeled and painted. I would have to look up that segment. It would be easier to ask now. Please and thank you. ☺️
Congratulations and best of luck with the new house looking forward to many more videos
