I’ve had the ob6 and x8, and ending up selling both (the ob6 for the x8 and the x8 because I couldn’t stand its design/page 2 etc). I am leaning towards getting a Teo-5, and which there was a 6 or 8 voice version of it (or a voice expansion option). If price were no issue, do you think the OB6 or TEO-5 have the better raw sound and filter? I liked the ob6, but not because of its drive/grit.

For those spending in the OB6/OB-X8 price range consider TEO-5 X 2 with a Midihub or similar for note distribution and local control off on one or both OR control from other keyboard. A bi-timbral OB10 in effect with some slick voice architecture additions over the other 2 for less than the OB6. When OB-X8 not on sale add a Hydrasynth Deluxe as the control keyboard for less than it. (You miss out on polyAT response from them, but Focusrite will NEVER add that) A bi-timbral "TEO-10" plus a Hydrasynth Deluxe for under $5k...

The TEO and the X8 have more of that Oberheim filter ‘Meow’ and sizzle. They’re all great in their own way. For me, I’m still holding my breath for an expanded TEO platform. 8/16 voice, 61 keys/module, poly AT (which I doubt will be a feature as they seem to wanna hold down the channel AT fort with Moog).

thank you so much for this comparison! A couple months ago I was juggling back and forth on the OB-6 vs the P6 and I started to settle that for what I write (synthpop/synthwave) the P6 would've been a better rounded option for me. Sold off my T5 and instantly regret it. Alot of the videos on YT doesn't really dive in much on the TEO5 like how you do so it was really refreshing to finally have that to base my choices. On a whim, I picked one up from Guitar Center locally instead of going the P6 route and I don't regret it. It's a nice best of both worlds of the T5 and the x8 sound. If anything, it reminds me ALOT of the Matrix 6 I owned but with more parameter controls and a modern revamp of it that oozes the classic VCO sound of Oberheim. Def noticed that the OB-6 has a bit more sizzle but it's not that much of a difference for me with what the TEO5 offers and at a reasonable price point. Looking forward to buying your patches!!

Thanks for 1 hour of Oberheim sounds. I have an OB-6 and an X8m; so no need for the TEO. I agree that the OB-6 sounds more saturated; the X8, on the other hand, sounds more defined and complements better with other synths. My long-time dream couple has been the P5 and the X8. However, recently the P5 lost its place to a Moog Muse with amazing stereo filters. Muse + X8 = synth heaven.

I certainly don't regret a thing. I think the OBX8 is the easy sweet spot machine, the TEO5 is the most versatile, and the OB6 is a Sequential themed take on Oberheim. Solid layout, great sounds, not quite the filter I want in one though.

I see the TEO-5 and Take 5 as interesting machines thanks to mod matrix and they booth seem very kind in their sounds not taking over the mix too much if that makes sense. I find them deeper thanks to the matrix and for example in my case as a Take 5 owner I simply love how much flexibility I have and the sound is very nice! Looking forward to get a TEO-5 when they are in stock here in europe. What I really find interesting is that the Take 5 was not impressing to me till I started making more complex patches with the mod matrix which opened up the synth in new possible ways. Nice video!

They all sound great. X8 - sounds so lush with the most filters options. I hate they didnt use more real estate with more knobs. The split/layer is magical even without FX. OB-6 - sounds amazing with knobs per function and no menu diving (huge ++). Limited FX, but pedals fix issue easily. Limited with 1 LFO and mod matrix options, but still excels while being handicaped vs other synths. TEO-5 - sounds great and is best bang. If they release a Desktop it will. E even cheaper. Is a no brainer if you can't afford the more expensive synths including the P5/10 or P6. Personally gravitate more to the OB sound, but the P5/10 sounds amazing. No wrong choice and we all win in the end with so many amazing options.

Thanks for the video, much appreciated. Three beautiful instruments. Having owned the Ob-6 and almost all Sequential synths including Take 5, and played both x8 and TEO-5, I’m still a bit torn. X8 has the best raw tone by far, and is the classic Oberheim. The Ob6 is a unique synth in its own right but not 100% Oberheimish 😊. But there is another classic Oberheim series, Xpander/Matrix, which had its strengths in the modulation options. The TEO-5 is the first Oberheim to get into that territory with its modulation matrix. That means, while in a mix it could be difficult to spot which one you’re using based on sound characteristics, the TEO-5 can do a lot things the others can’t sound wise. From that perspective it makes it the most versatile, also sounding very good…

First of all, thanks for putting out this video. I don’t make videos and have no idea how to make one, but the time, editing and the workflow that it needs to present it must be very time consuming. And I thank you for taking the time to make it for our enjoyment and education.
Without a doubt, all 3 synths are very different. The TEO-5 is definitely, sound wise, closer to the OBX8, which is what sequential/and Tom were going after.
The OB-6 is a whole different synth. More open, more top end, however to me is missing that classic OB essence. When it came out I was very excited but after listening to lots of videos I loss interest. I used to own an OBXa. So to me and my nostalgia, the sound wasn’t there. That being said, if you want an unique sound the OB-6 is the way to go hands down.
The ObX8 is definitely whole different ball game. Rich, full, powerful, it just that classic OB sound. It is what it is a wonderful beast. That being said, for 2024 it may be a very limited synth. So if you are looking for that richness and fullness then look no further the OBX8 is the synth to get. Of the 3 is the darkest sounding though.
The TEO-5, is a very nice take of the OBx8. But it needs outboard gadgets to help it out. It sounds wonderful, no doubt, but it is the thinnest sounding of the 3. That being said, I was very impressed by the modulation and the LFOs, the SVF. That to me is the selling point for such a synth. I wish sequential/OB wound have come up with an 8 voice poly with the OBx8 osc , the SEM filter with those capabilities. That would have eaten the OB-6 and the OBx8. IMHO.
I am a bit torn, my TEO-5 is about ship with my Moog Muse. I am thinking of adding my 80s ProCo RAT pedal for OD sounds, and add a parametric EQ to help boost certain frequencies for the TEO-5, and run it through my Fender Deluxe Reverb to make it more alive and use the tube reverb. I also have analog delays that I can use it as well in order to spice up the sound. If I don’t like it I’ll return it and get the OBx8 then.
In the end, like you mentioned, in a mix no one will hear the difference between the 3. This is just nitpicking, and being nerdy about it. Just because we love synths and how the sound and inspire us to make music.

These do take quite a while to make so I appreciate you noticing :) totally agree with your thoughts, except for me I love that the OB6 doesn't sound as traditional Oberheim. I have a Take 5 on loan and quite like the interface and mod options. On the other hand the OB-X8 sounds so gorgeous and alive, lots of movement, but it does seem a little less intuitive with the page 2 functions.
Perhaps the OB-6 is in between the two, having effects and x-mod but for some reason I didn't really fall in love with it when I demo'd it in a shop recently.. perhaps I should spend more time with it.
I guess I'll wait for the TEO to be available in Europe and go play all of them side by side. There's only so much you can gather from fora and YT vids :)
Thanks again for the videos you make, subscribed!

All three sound great. They sound about what they cost, so the OB-X8 has the highest fidelity, followed by the OB-6 then the TEO-5. But, in a mix you probably aren’t going to notice the difference, and the TEO-5 is the most flexible. After your last video I ordered a TEO-5 but now I’m getting tempted to cancel that order and get the OB-X8 module instead, but I’ll try to resist. The Take 5 is currently my favorite poly, and I’m sure I’ll love the TEO as well.

Sold my OB-6 a few years ago. Certainly a fine basic synth. It leans heavily on the SEM filter and 80s aesthetics, but was ultimately frustrated by the limited modulation sources/destinations, basic/lackluster onboard effects, lack of modern patch editor and DAW integration, and banking through nameless (only numbered) presets on a modern synth. The banking is retro cool at first but quickly gets old. I realize that’s a nit, but having to memorize hundreds of patches by numbers is a flow killer, at least IME. At 6 voices it is, but barely a poly synth. Voice cutoff is something you’ll have to mind and plan around. If it cost half as much I’d understand but it’s objectively underpowered at a $3,500 price point.

    • @cfs
      @cfs 3 месяца назад

No problem avoiding "80s aesthetics" in terms of the sound of an OB-6. I love the workflow - far superior to the X8. Numbered presets are easy as long as you organize them. Voice cutoff has been a thing for a long time (e.g., Prophet 5), not unique or special in the OB-6, except it does a great job of it - and can also be somewhat mitigated via using a BBD delay.

@@MilesAwayOfficial The TEO-5 is a good value. But, what if I said instead of 5 voices, you could have infinite Oberheim voices, total recall, full automation of all synth parameters, seamless DAW integration, with sound so full and convincing that 99.999% of listeners will not know it's not one of these three synths, yet is a synth officially endorsed by Tom Oberheim, and, it can be delivered to your studio today, for free, oh and almost like magic...takes up no space, is virtually impossible to break, it's wireless (uses no audio or power cables), never has to be dusted, is more energy efficient, has a fraction of the carbon footprint, and is $1,400 - $3,900 less than the TEO-5, OB-6 or OB-XA? Oh...and you already own it and said it's awesome? 😉Haha. I'm surprised you didn't link your GForce Oberheim OB-X review!
Honestly, I sold most of my hardware and have been equally happy with VST equivalents from Arturia and others for all of the above. Obviously, hardware is great for other reasons (not knocking it!), but perhaps worth reminding that the OB sound is accessible and very well covered in VST options too.

Awesome, mate! I love your genuine enthusiasm and I deeply enjoyed your inspiring and informative demo. Thanks for your great work!
Something makes my heart melt when I hear the OB-6, so that would be the one for me if I ever got a third synth for a troika with my Prophet 10 and Matriarch.
Being a choir director, I'd can't help sharing a thought on tuning.
When you played that simple sawtooth note on TEO, OB-6 and OB-X8 at 2:14 of the init patch chapter, the TEO sounded considerably flat to me in comparison, and the OB-6 seemed to be a little sharper than the OB-X8 .
Now, here's the point. Orchestras have a habit of tuning a little sharp compared to concert pitch, that's why the standard tuning keeps rising over the course of time. One could argue that Mozart's pieces in the key of A major should actually be played in Ab major today to be in the key that he intended…
But why do they do it? Simply put: Because sharp sounds better, brighter, simply more appealing than flat.
In my choir we had a little game to practice intonation: choir sings with piano a couple of bars, choir sings a cappella for a couple more bars rising slightly in pitch, then stops. The piano will sound awful now, because it is flat.
I suggest tuning all instruments to the same pitch in a comparison like this, so that none of them will sound better or worse because it is a little sharp or flat.
I do hope it's ok to chime in with this, bro. Keep on groovin'!

The components and technology used in TEO-5 and OB-X8 are very similar, but the components and technology used in the OB-6 is pretty different from the former two. If you dare to open up all 3 synths and have a look at internals, you will immediately see big differences between TEO-5/OB-X8 and the OB-6. The TEO-5/OB-X8 relies more on surface mount chips for the VCOs and VCFs, but the VCOs and VCFs on the OB-6 are novel discrete designs that are put onto DIMM-cards -- the same DIMM-format as modern computer memory cards. :)

Hi! I was needing some advice. After graduating my beginner synth (a Korg Minilogue XD) and finding it hugely enjoyable, I have decided to pursue this hobby and produce my own music akin to some of my most memorable early childhood music (UK early 80s synthpop / late disco era). Examples linked at bottom: Soft Cell; Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin. I've already purchased a Roland TR-08 drumkit and I'm close to pulling the trigger on the TEO-5. Whilst I think perhaps a Sequential Prophet may offer the purer sounds associated with Soft Cell, the price is offputting, and the TEO-5 has more versatility for an alienlike song chorus e.g. pads with the gorgeous filter + digital effects as seen with Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (although I need the versatility of both). What do you think? Furthermore, with the TEO-5 being so bright, would a potential second synth be recommended for the bassline (one that is reasonably priced and 'well executed' - the Korg sounds a bit rough)? Happy to hear your thoughts.

I've watched this video a few times now (great video btw) and I thought watching would help me choose but I'm actually more undecided 😀. They all sound amazing to me and I can't really hear that much difference between them to be honest. The digital overdrive on the TEO-5 is a real pain though - it sounds terrible when driven hard. I hate digital distortion/clipping of any kind as it's unforgiving so it sounds very harsh. The overdrive on the OB-6 is beautiful - very musical. The price difference between the TEO-5 and the OB-6 is huge, even the desktop is at least £500 more than the TEO-5. As I'll be controlling the unit via MIDI the keyboard size of the TEO-5 is not that important but the fact it has a keyboard means I can still use it independently of the studio which is very useful actually. So at the moment it's a toss up between the TEO-5 and the OB-6 Desktop as I already have a Moog Matriarch on order, but I'm definitely leaning towards the TEO-5 due to its excellent price. I still want that OB-X8 at some point though - what a machine 🤩.

State variable is not what you think it is. All 3 synths have a state variable filter. It is the topology of the filter itself, not the function of the knob. Maybe variable state variable is appropriate. The cool feature of the filter as opposed to just a multimode filter is the filter design gives access to all states simultaneously rather than manipulation of the state to create the different states. It’s too bad the X8 didn’t bring that capability to the panel since it’s physically there in the synth. Still love my X8. My TVS pro can do the other coolness.

My question though is, if you could do a comparison between something like the TEO 5 with your Moog for some bass tones. My situation is, I'm using software synth most of the time and what I'm missing the most and where it seems no software comes close are those Moog basses. But I always shy away from spending that amount of money to get a monosynth, so I'm wondering which of these semi-affordable poly-synths can get relatively close to some sort of Moog bass and leads. What I really love are the kind of old-shool kinda funk and soul ones, or in the style of Michael Jackson but also a lot of Snarky Puppy songs have some great Moog-tones. The gsmusic one seems like a good choice but from demos I've found it doesn't seem to have that thick lows.
Any recommendations? Otherwise I'd love to see some sort of Moog vs the rest, especially when it comes to bass.

B-stock Polybrute $1600, used SCI Rev 2-16 $1700, UB-Xa used $950 is the best analog bargain out there. Yet, I digress. Let's face it, even at $4K OB-X8 is a redonkulous price for 8-voice analog. Ya don't even get the pinstripes for that amount. A used Muse for $3K, although it's retro-fugly is just another consideration, although not a bargain. I will watch for a used TEO-5 at the right price, the filter and TZFM make it a standout.

I have a Take 5. Would you say Teo-5 would be a good addition instead of the OB-6? I’ve recently sold my Matriarch (which I thought I would never do), so that I could order a Muse. However, I really do love the Oberheim sound. I cannot afford to buy an OB-6 and a Muse right now. I’m wondering if the Take 5 has too much overlap with the Teo-5 compared to the OB-6. If so, I could forego the Teo-5, and get the OB-6 next year. I should mention that I have the Summit as well, which I currently have no plans on selling.

Late reply! I think the TEO-5 is a great synth if you want the OB sound. It's so close the the X8 for the relatively low price. Would be an awesome combo with Muse! That being said, I am personally going to try to trade or sell it to keep the channel content going, just cause I prefer the other OBs slightly :)

I kinda like it they all are not the same, I love my OB-6 desktop and I love to have the TEO-5 with it's slightly different sound and many effects and the huge Mod matrix. Can't afford an OB-8 and will never buy it, so and don't care about it. I like old synths with a modern twist better and of course more value for your money.

To me, the OB8 has that classic deep powerful vintage sound, but the TEO 5 would be more suited to modern music because it has its own tone and the modulation options make it very special. The OB6 is surely a great synth, but in this video it seemed to have too much resonance, as if it lacked bass or body… But it just my opinion And it's very difficult to give an opinion on these great instruments just by watching videos on RUclips. You'll have to try it yourself!

Is hard to discount the TEO compared to the OB6 when it sounds closer sound to the OB8X, has more modulation, zero through fm and better effects. If the 8X uses oberheim oscillators and the OB6 uses prophet oscillators what oscillators does the TEO 5 use? If you’re not specifically going for that vintage sound which would you get?

@@TheMachinesWon 100%! It’s too aggressive for my next miles away ep but it’s been getting some use for sound design!

OB-6 for me. Am on my third now after missing the past ones. For me it's the perfect workflow to sound ratio. 6 Voices is minimum (the stealing on the TEO would drive me mad), I hate menu diving on analogs (so X8 and TEO lose there for me). I do like the sound of the X8 obviously, but it makes less sense to me, like my Prophet 10 r4 did (which I sold because I preferred my Trigon-6). The OB-6 has a very unique sound, not completely vintage but great anyway. TEO sounds smaller and far too much stuff than I care for. X8 would be great if it had ALL the OB-6 had too. So overall, the OB-6 is the sweetspot for me but I wouldn't turn my nose up an an X8 I'd never swap my OB- for one.
