You know what. I'll return new Moog Muse and get TEO-5! 🖤 Thanks for on-point deep dive and beaut demos!
I love/need Oberheim sound and like TEO-5 even more than OB-X8, for those exact poly LFO, thru zero fm, while still with genuine SEM filter, modulating fx, etc.
No, not saying/comparing Muse to TEO-5 or OB-X8. And I'm still hopeless moogacholic with Model D and Subsequent 37CV, they cover lots. Even when I had zero analog synths in my studio, always played OB-Xa Arturia, or SEM Arturia app, or OB-X spirit Korg Gadget. TEO-5 would add that charm into analogue synth collection with Moogs, ARP2600, Buchla 208c.
Last but not least I really respect what Tom did here for synth lovers - charming, unique, and affordable Oberheim. Cheers!

Love you that pointed out the "shallow water" style slew pitch mod. That's actually I was hoping someone would demo, as it's one of my favorite tricks. If Sequential decides to hit us all with a 10 voice version of these, maybe even with an expanded keybed for somewhere in the ballpark of $3k, they would decimate a lot of what's out there. As it stands, the TEO5 is still an amazing synth.

Just FYI, the UB-Xa does have a mod matrix. 8 slot/buss, however you want to say it, 40+ (give or take) sources and about the same (give or take, not going to actually count them) destinations. It also has this interesting "Atrophy" settings that, just eying it in the manual, looks like 30+ parameters that change the way various parts of the synth behave. These can be saved with a patch. I've read it can do "Circuit bending" like stuff without actually doing so, but I haven't seen anyone demonstrate it so that's up in the air.
It does not have a SEM filter, so that sound is def not there. It has a Curtis clone they make, I believe. It is supposed to be a souped up OB-Xa clone after all.
I do agree the TEO-5 sounds better, (subjectively) but the UB in right hands does sound quite nice in it's own right, and is very capable of interesting sounds. Plus the 16 voices are a huge plus, especially when you're thinking in layer mode, essentially doubling everything but the voices., leaving you 8. 16 bus matrix? Hmmm, the desktop is 800 bones, but right now I see the PAT keys ver at a sale price of $888 at Alto Music and Reverb.
Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention. There's some interesting modulated sources. One of them is called Butter I think, I saw it a while back so I may be wrong on the name, but it's basically a step mod. So illustrate, send that to panning, for example, and it will pan the stereo field 1 note/key at a time. It has others that do cool stuff, and they may have added some with the recent firmware update.

Very nice demonstration! You briefly mentioned budget matrix series. From my own "investigation" that's not compareable with the TEO. When my last OB-8 started to die & I had tob recreate fave sounds with other gear, it became too obvious that "little" Matrix series 4-pole VCF never shines like a TEO or an OB(X)8.when fully turned up. It's no wonder that Oberheim achieved cult status thru 2-pole VCFs. 4poles others do better.
Lil' matrix only have 10 slots but are still deep. LFOs are flexible but slow. There's soft & hard sync, VCF-FM & a quite UNuseful key click param.
Unfortunately, ENV stages are totally linear.& slow. Since there's just one tracking generator, it is no longer available for other sources, if used to shape a decent ENV curve, unless you take that shaped source consciously for other destinations. In the meantime, budget matrix's OS has allegedly been fine-tuned by a third-party provider.
I have to protect the UB-Xa a little bit. This not just has the entire OB8 Page 2 functionality but also a deep 8 slot mod matrix, as well as further improvments through a recent major update, such as loopable ENVs, a more opened VCF (than before) and other useful things like storage of perf. LFO & atrophy setting per patch & not to forget the 16 voices. I've not yet tried it but it reads promising.

are you saying teo-5 envelopers are linear and slow? i cant tell if thats what youre saying or not, but if so, you can recursively modulate any stage of any eg with its own envelope in the matrix to make it exponential or linear. plus you can stack mod slots and use the dc mod source to push values well past their initial knob max value

The TEO-5 is exactly what Oberheim needed to do, and it totally delivers the sound that OB is known for. The partnership with Sequential is such a gift for us synth enthusiasts. I tried the TEO earlier this month alongside the X8, and I feel that it is 90% there (lacking some of the midrange warmth of the X8). The modulation capabilities are amazing, and the envelopes are significantly better than those on the OB-6 (with OB-8 envelope modeling). It has more headroom than the OB-6 and feels a bit more like a sweet spot machine, which is impressive considering it has more menu diving than the OB-6. I believe the Take and TEO-5 should be everyone’s first synth if they are serious about getting into the world of hardware. I hope Sequential/Oberheim creates a matrix homage, ideally using the Rev 2 platform and adding the matrix filter. (CEM 3372)

I think the TEO-5 has some flavor of the OBX8. But I don’t know if I could say it is 90% of the sound of an OBX8.
My impression at first when I got it was that it was very rough sounding. It does not have that livelyness, fullness or space of the OBX8. Sounds a bit thin. Even through a tube amp with eq.
The TEO-5 is a hybrid synth, and the benefit of it is the modulation over the OBX8.
If you want a modern OB like sounds then the TEO-5 is the way to go . I ordered the OBX8 module. Already have a MUSE. I have not decided wether to return the TEO-5 and get something different. Summit, PEAK or hydrasynth.

    • @Nunchuckstraberry
      @Nunchuckstraberry 3 месяца назад +2

Congrats on the new OB acquisitions! If I were you, I would get both the X8 and Teo 5. Sure, the X8 is a flagship model and the Teo is more of an entry point, but I view owning both as having two sides of a golden coin. The X8 has the mid-range magic that the golden era of polys was known for, and I think the Teo expands on that with more flexible modulation with a slight loss in the raw tone. I still stand by the 90% comparison between the X8 and the Teo. (Make sure when you compare both to have the X filter and the OB-8 envelopes set on the X8, and you will see what I mean.) In terms of the Teo being hybrid, the X8 is similar, minus the VCA. The envelopes and LFO are completely digitally controlled, and I think this is a major pro rather than a con in the modern synth design landscape.

I played around with the TEO-5 at Superbooth, and found it a sweet sounding synth with a lot of great features. But after a few layers of complexity, the sound begins to feel less analog, and is probably more similar sonically to VA synthesis... even a bit sterile. I wonder if you have a moment to advise me. How do you feel this compares to the classic Oberheims in terms of ‘analog sound?’ Sorry if that sounds like a naive or silly question, but I bought and was disappointed by the Take 5, finding that it sounded much more ‘digital’ and modern than I wanted/expected. I’m not a programmer-type. I’m more involved with guitars but wanted a hardware synth for composing music with 80s-90s sensibilities. You’re making this sound much better than the other demos I’ve heard, which remind me of the Take 5, unfortunately.

Love the price. It's an Oberheim with a mod matrix and SEM filter. For some reason it just doesn't sound thick. Get's wide and really close just missing that last 10%. The OB-X8 can make your mouth open and say WOW! OB-6 can do it as well just not as often. Still think it's an amazing instrument, I just want that wow factor.
