How to fix Saturn Sky solenoid actuator (P0010 P0011)

- If you have a Sky then at some point you will most likely face this issue. If you fall into the 85% of Skys that are affected by this problem and have an ECM indicating P0010 or P0011 then this is the perfect solution to completely fix the problem. The skys were great cars without a doubt but the one thing that Saturn skipped out on was the solenoid actuator for the VVT cam shaft control. This problem is referenced multiple times on SkyRoadster.com and there is a simple fix to it. Simply replace the solenoid and your back to normal! If you continue to run the engine with the faulty solenoid it won’t destroy your engine but it can cause issues that you just won’t want to deal with. Pay the $25 for the new part and install it yourself, it’s not hard at all. Here are some links to the solenoid on the roadster forum page. Remember that this problem can happen even if the engine is still low in mileage (my last sky it happened at 50,000 miles and this sky it is happening at 40,000). If you have any questions about this then please feel free to leave a comment.

I first found this video about 5 years ago when I had an issue with the Intake Solenoid. I bought a pair (Intake + Exhaust) from Amazon for about $30. Following this video I replaced the intake and the P0011 went away.
Fast forward 5 years, and I had a P0014 - Exhaust side. Well, I still had the Exhaust Solenoid in a box. I replaced this since the procedure is identical. After driving a bit, the system is reset.
For $30, this video saved me likely several hundred bucks. Thanks! You have done us all a service.
Thanks so much for your video! I was able to change my selenoids myself!! Yippie. The bolts were a nightmare to get off, the rest was easy! THANK YOU!!
Excellent video! Such an easy fix, I can only imagine what a shop would have charged for this fix. Thank you!!
They were going to charge me over $400
Good video, I love how in the intro you simply walk up to the car like he’s on a TV show lol
thanks, yeah my friend is quite a camera man
Thank you for posting this video. Had a CEL and the usual symptoms of bad solenoids during deceleration. Your video really helped me install both new solenoids. Problem solved and big bucks saved. *Thought It was the transmission. Thank you.
Greg Rowell Im so glad that this video could help you! I had to replace these on all 3 skys that I've owned. They were just poorly made from the factory...thanks GM. Im sorry you had issues with your trans, that is never cheap.
Thanks for the video! Just replaced the intake and exhaust solenoids on my SKY RL. Easy peasy!
Im so glad it helped you
Use compressed air (and safety glasses) to blow out cylinder head valley before removing solenoids to avoid debris entering hole/s, same as you would on overhead spark plugs.
Thanks for posting! I have a 2006 Solstice and I kept getting the P0011 error. I just replaced it and I'm hoping this will get rid of that error!
Jen Kuzmick if it does not clear right away it will in a few days when the ECM system resets. If it still does not then try to replace the intake solenoid too
USUniversal hey yep! I replaced the intake one. I'd already cleared the code, so I guess I'll hope it doesn't come back. Haha. Thanks again!
@@jenkuzmick1102 I was told sometimes you have to run the gas tank down to a 1/4 tank for them to reset
Don't know if you'll see this. Once the actuator is replaced will the check engine light go off? Thanks
Thanks for this video, it was really helpful. 👌
Thanks for the video. Just switched out both an hour ago. The problem is still there. Do I need to clear the codes first?
Jay Williams yes clear the codes. When I did this on my first Sky I had to clear the code. On this Sky it cleared itself right away.
thank you a lot for the video!
the little clip on mine broke off, i tried looking how to replace that .. any suggestions, please?
H hi my name is Tina I have a 2007 Saturn sky and when I put on my when I get ready to slow down it's jerking really bad and they keep on saying the transmission but then somebody says it's not transmission can you tell me what's going on with my car
Dude thank you
Thanks for the vid!
awesome video
I finally got my Magna Flow 16664 delivered. It took eight months to arrive. I'm having it installed once the weather stays warm. Anyway, I know it's been a while since you had the one on your other car installed but do you recall if there were any issues with the computer with regards to error codes, etc? Thanks, Lance
congratulations on your new system! Nope, I have never had any issues what so ever with the exhaust on either of my skys.
Thank you for letting me know.
Thank you for the video! I'm changing mine tomorrow by myself! I have a question. Will this problem cause my care to jerk as I'm slowing down?
it should not cause it to jerk muvh, just might run rough at idle or when low RPMs.
Ok. Thank you. You were right. It's still jerking
@@saudiayasmein368 is yours an automatic transmission or manual? it could be the trans downshifting if its an auto
Saudia Yasmein did you ever get that jerking problem fixed?
Hey did you ever get your car fix ??
Awsome video, I'm going to be doing this soon because my Sky gave me those codes a few months ago. One question tho please. How did u know wether to replace the Exterior or Exhaust solenoid? Thanks
google account its the intake, it s the intake 85% of the time, hope it helps
Ok thanks a lot.
thanks so much for the reply!!! I will give it a try! I'm thinking turbo engine on my 08 will be same pretty much, same spot to replace them? also when looking online in finding part as is the exhaust and intake are same part, is that right or I need specific exhaust selonoid? thanks again... big help, can't get answers i need anywhere else... really appreciate it!
Yes the LNF and the LE5 engines are very closely alike. Of course the LNF is only the 2L version but is turboed but for the most part all the mechanics on the cylinders will work the same and will be positioned the same. So the camshaft actuators should be in the same spot on your engine as is on my engine. You will need to buy the exhaust actuator though which is actually different than the intake so make sure you get the correct part when you order it.
+USUniversal thanks man! really appreciate it!!!!
Thank you I just did my 07 redline. My car did not have the intake or exhaust label on it.
I'm glad it helped!
i lost my part that clicks i to the selonoid sensor does autozone or advanced autoparts have one and my car has a very rough idle so is it the intake or the exhaust and i drive turbo solstice
if its a rough idle the it must be an intake. The exhaust would affect the idle much since it is beyond that point. that part will most likely need to be found on a forum. skyroadster.com or the solstice forum will work
Thanks a lot for helping out. I had this happen to me already TWICE, one for each sensor and my car only has 50K on it. Seriously GM. Airbag sensors (at least this one's recalled now yay!), these solenoids, and the door strikers. dadfuq wuz u thinkin?
oh yes the first sky that I owned had the same issues and I had to fix it. In addition it also had the passenger airbag defect and I never was able to fix that. Now with my current Sky I finally received a factory recall letter in the mail from GM concerning the airbag, though this sky doesn't indicate a problem with the airbag yet. I will go ahead and get it replaced still.
What is your web address so I can follow you on other issues? Currently I replaced both Cam shaft position sensors but I keep getting the engine light code P0366 cam shaft B1
well I don't really have my own web address but what I would encourage you if you are having multiple issues is to go to skyroadster.com and check out the forums on those codes. That group can diagnose and help any issue with a sky and if there isn't a post already on a topic you can start your own thread for it and people will help you out. I hope that is helpful for you.
Did you have to remove the negative on the battery? nice video
i did not remove it no, i wouldn't worry about it. But you can certainly do it if you want to be safe.
i should say...i went looked at my engine didn't see it where yours was but it has a cover may be covering it
Can you tell the part number? All I find is $50 parts?
www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/saturn,2007,sky,2.4l+l4,1433270,engine,variable+valve+timing+(vvt)+solenoid+/+actuator,12910 here is a site you can use to purchase the new part. I would suggest getting a diagnostic check first at your local auto parts store if you check engine light is on and see what the report says. It should tell you weather it is your intake valve that is bad or the exhaust valve. then you can purchase the correct part from this site.
The clip on connector broke where can I get a new cliprugbear101@yahoo.com
I have looked all over but cannot find the part of the part number. Honestly I know it isn't the preferred option but it might just be best to go without the clip. It isn't completely necessary to have it. If it really is bothering you though or becomes an issue you can always check on skyroadster.com
Where did you purchase your solenoids?
www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/saturn,2007,sky,2.4l+l4,1433270,engine,variable+valve+timing+(vvt)+solenoid+/+actuator,12910
you will want the exhaust, any of them will do as long as it is the exhaust solenoid
I have an 2008 sky redline turbo just got check engine light on with code p0014 .... I'm no mechanic and im broke, I think I could fix this with this awesome video.... would i do the same thing but with the exhaust? also I called mechanic they said most likely need sensor replaced and both with that code and quoted $450...i don't even have $50..... any help truly appreciated!!!! thanks man, great video
Yes I would highly suggest changing out the exhaust actuator. It is a pretty cheap part and you can get it online from most websites. Also check out this posting about that code being thrown in your system. www.skyroadster.com/forums/f5/cel-code-p0013-p0014-help-77090/
My bad, do u still have this one. 😆
Yes I still have it, not planning on selling it haha
Did anyone have the jerking problem when u are breaking. That’s why I’m here
Did find out what wrong
Also getting the code P0230
Great Video get a haircut HIPPY!!
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
