A Moment of Tiki 35: Moai Carving

  • There comes a time in ever tiki home bar owner's life when the notion of carving tikis will come upon him or her. In this episode of A Moment of Tiki, I take an old pecan log and attempt to carve it into a Moai based on those from the island of Rapa Nui. I use a combination of chain saw, angle grinder and die grinder. Of these power tools, I used the chainsaw and angle grinder (with a Kutzall Extreme shaping disk) to rough out the shape, then finessed the details using my die grinder with some Saburrtooth burrs. Because I am dumb, I left the log exposed outside for several years, which meant insects and fungus had gotten to work on it, which caused some issues. The log was also pecan, which turned out to be one of the hardest woods native to North America. Probably not the best planning on my part, but hey, I make the mistakes so you don't have to!
    I misspoke in the video--where I claim to be using "Golden Pecan" wood stain, I'm actually using "Golden Oak," in case such things matter to anyone.

      I like to say "I make the mistakes so you don't have to," and boy, are there a LOT of mistakes in this one! The good news it I've gotten better. Check out my Tiki Bob and Hawaiian Eye videos to see my improvement!

      Thanks Ben! I'm glad you're finding some inspiration here. I did just about everything wrong with this moai I possibly could. Hopefully I'll have some new carving videos before too long that are a little more accomplished.

    i love your video,....tHAT BEING SAID, ....IN REALITY YOU SHOULD ONLY BE USING A WOODEN MALLET AND CHISELS!, BUT YOU DO WHAT EVER YOU GOTTA DO !

    • @LagoonofMystery
      @LagoonofMystery  Год назад +1

      That would've been a fool's errand on wood as hard as pecan. Palm log is much more amenable to the chisel/gouge approach. My skills with those tools are still dubious at best but I'm working on it! 😉

    Single digit temps in Northern Illinois have me looking at my tropical plants (that are spending the winter in my south-facing bedroom windows) and looking forward to enjoying my backyard tiki bar in the spring. Thanks for keeping hope alive with your videos.

      I feel for you! It's been unseasonably non-winterish here, in that we've not even come close to our first frost. But the cold will come, however fleeting, and all of my plants will have to migrate to the garage. Very much not looking forward to that!

    Cool idea! I got a big old poplar log out back trying to figure out what to do with it. Now I know. Should have enough for lest 15 this size.

      @LagoonofMystery  2 года назад

      Poplar should be a LOT easier to carve than pecan!

      I don't know if I'll be able to get to a video on this in the near future, but I did devote a blog post to those posts. If you've got access to a router you're halfway there. Here's the url: jlbgibberish.blogspot.com/2018/05/tiki-build-along-pt-19.html

      Ha ha! Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure how much I'm improving, but starting off with a long that's not simultaneously super-hard and rotting will surely help!
