I love this song! We played it at an honor band and Mr. Hazo directed us himself. It was amazing getting to work with him, and he is awesome. It was the best performance I've ever been a part of. It was so good, I cried during the performance....everyone loved it. Listening to it brings back good memories. That just happened this past year, but still soooo amazing.
I graduated as a class of 2011, and I was in band since the seventh grade. I wish I did band for college. I'm really regretting not joining band. Band is my life. Mannnn, Listening to Sam Hazo pieces bring back memories.
2:50 to the end is just the most beautifully constructed thing, ever. I have never been so physically moved by anything like this. Cannot stop listening. Total propage to Hazo and his mad skills! :D
My freshman year, our marching show had: Rush, Ride, and Olympiada in it. That's the only music we used. The show was called The Pursuit Of Excellence.
I played this with my high school band as a freshman two years ago and won a contest in Orlando Florida with it. I tried playing along with this recording, and found out that you are correct and this is in B major instead of the Bb major transposition we and most others played.
This is incredible. I've never heard a band in either the key of B major or the key of C flat major ever. It's unprecedented in concert band. It's heard more in orchestra. I can tell just by listening that it's in either one of those keys.
yeah Tsax53, he is awesome. WE played voices of the sky last year, and it was sooo pretty. The thing that made the performance so good was the acoustics of the autitorium. It was so big, but it had the right set up, and it was just perfect (if there was a perfect..it would have been perfect) Have fun with your district honor band, too.
Maybe this song was recorded or pitched differently or something. When I replayed this video, I got on the piano and the melody was f sharp, b, g sharp, d sharp, and back to b natural at the very beginning.
I had the honor to have Samuel Hazo himself conduct us for this piece for my county band my junior year. By the end of the piece, I was shaking like a damn crackhead... it was THAT intense. .___ .
@somonoi It is an absolute BLAST to play. I had the very fortunate experience of being able to play percussion on this piece while being conducted by none other than Samuel R. Hazo himself. If you ever get the chance to play this piece, I'm sure you'll love it!
This song is one of my absolute favorite pieces to play in concert band, we played this sophmore year and the ending in so intense, my other favorite song we played in band would have to be Lux Arumque
@404jipjip It was made as a tribute to the Olympic Games. The intensity of the competition and the athletes struggle, and then the happiness they feel, is exactly what it was written to express. You can see that description in the author's words here:
hahahaha my band played this down in disney of february '09. we wer pretty awesome nd got great reviews. we're only a high school band, but they said we sounded like a college band. xD
this song really reminds me of some kind of competetive sports movie and during it they go through some hardships. but near 3:20 that part reminds me that after all they have been through they have reached the finish line. don't you think? :)
Is it just me or does a french horn crack a note at 0:22 ? Either way it bothers me every time. Love this song though. Marched it freshman year, been giving me chills ever since.
@jngrand Hal Leonard offers free downloads. Search on their website Olympiada, then click on the audio button. under the audio player, there should be a link called "link to audio file" or something. click and the download should start automatically.
it kinda sounds like everything's on the treble side and there's no real bass for some reason...obviously bass instruments are there but it's like when you adjust your radio and turn the treble up and bass down
@404jipjip Sorry, the link wont work. If you search samuel r. hazo into Google, however, it will take you to his website, and if you go up to Grade 4, and click Olympiada in the dropdown menu, you will be able to see it.

This song is amazing and the Chords just give such a release, If the beginning was cleaned up a little it would be perfect
@somonoi It is an absolute BLAST to play. I had the very fortunate experience of being able to play percussion on this piece while being conducted by none other than Samuel R. Hazo himself. If you ever get the chance to play this piece, I'm sure you'll love it!

this song really reminds me of some kind of competetive sports movie and during it they go through some hardships. but near 3:20 that part reminds me that after all they have been through they have reached the finish line. don't you think? :)
