Thank you Kevin - that's good to hear. Every good wish to you for the festive season when it eventually arrives (even if Santa has got his dates mixed up!)
Thank you. There's another "Port Road" volume due out later this week and - who knows? - something might crop up unexpectedly between now and Christmas.
Good to see 45407 out and about somewhere other than fort William and mallaig I hope to see her at Edinburgh this Saturday along with the northern belle and the 2 86s. Cracking vid as always Tim and top quality clips!
Back when I was even smaller than I am now, most if not all express trains which called at our local station were locomotive-hauled compartment stock. You can imagine my horror when my college years came about, the Dutch Railways had replaced all the nice carriages with open multiple units...!
Compartment stock was the norm on British main-line trains until the electrification of the West Coast Main Line. The first Mark 2s - open saloon coaches - were introduced in 1964, the year I went to college, but the traditional stock was the mainstay of the rest of the system for years to come. Some Mark 1 open stock had been used for "tourist" trains but it wasn't common and I often wonder where the preservation movement managed to find all the open carriages in use today.
I wondered what Adrian and yourself were watching down on Platform 4! At least you didnt catch me doing my filming on one foot! It was a definitely a busy day; you've captured it in many ways. Now to find some interesting trains for a December Saturday - besides the Midland Pullman.
It turned out to be a much more productive day than I had anticipated - a good finale for 2024. Yes - Platform 4 was where it was all happening! Santa put on a good show throughout the day - I loved his announcements although, sadly, they haven't come across too clearly in the video. Here's to the next time - whenever that may be.
An interesting day there Tim and even a dancing santa LOL Nice to see they used the Black 5 on the charter and also on the one I saw at York. It got dark really quickly and a lot colder all of a sudden. We still have some steam to come so I may get out again if it is not too bad.
Glad that you've still got some steam to look forward to. In years gone by we've had Christmas specials - I've filmed steam here on the shortest day of the year in the past but I think the current economic situation is hitting the railway just like everyone else. Even my local country house pub has shut up shop for the winter. Apart from the pandemic, it's never closed before in a history going back centuries.
@@schoolshorts The forecast for heavy snow is most likely not as bad as they say, so Thursday there is a charter to York and Saturday two steam again, although one is setting off early so I will not see that one. York has it's Chrismas market so a lot will be going there, but over all yes people are struggling to pay for eveyday things, so going out for a day or calling in for a beer is certainly the kind of thing many are cutting down on. We have a lot of unrest and worry these days.
… another lovely vlog Tim…. Yes, great to see Santa getting in the Christmas mood…😂 Re the coach with the compartment seating, i remember them well. In the 1950’s sometimes used to travel to Liverpool on the train for our fortnightly annual holiday, and remember those coaches very well. As you say though, the younger generation would not know what we are talking about 🤣🤣 May i take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy 2025 (a tad early i know, but thought it prudent to wish you the Season’s greetings while i remember ….
Thank you for your very kind wishes - which are, of course, fully reciprocated. Hopefully 2025 will offer lots of opportunities for filming - who knows?
Great video, It might be the last steam train to Carlisle, but 45407 is due to go up to Edinburgh to do polar express trains in the Edinburgh area on the 30th of November, so might see some empty stock works going up and down from there unless it goes the east coast way!
Thanks James. I had a chat with the driver and guard of the steam special and they were recommending travelling to Edinburgh to film the Polar Express but, as I pointed out to them, it's a difficult place to get to from this area. At present I can't find any routes or timings for either the Polar Express or its ecs workings - perhaps they'll be published later in the month.
It’s far to early for Easter Tim just to let you know that the steam train called tornado has been doing train. Tours so you might want to see it especially when it was built 2007 and it’s a very big steam train
Hiya Tim, another good video from you mate I must ask, do you ever find the coaching stock that West Coast choose to be a bit... unsuitable for steam locomotives? The mk2s I get, because of CDL, but I think the majority of 45407s train was mk3s
I've long maintained that nothing later than BR Mark 1s should travel behind a steam loco. We all know that WCR's failure to fit its Mk 1s with central locking is the reason for so much Mk 2 stock - and I don't see any sign of that changing in the immediate future. I personally would love to see some Gresley timber-bodied carriages in use (yes - I know they're in use on the Severn Valley and I have travelled in them), historical, good-looking and very comfortable to ride in - but there's no way that the ORR would ever let them out on the main line these days. The Pullman stock of course is Northern Belle, not West Coast Railways - and they sell luxury travel rather than steam per se.
@schoolshorts ah well, we can always dream. By the way, there are a couple of Gresley teak coaches also in use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, they're usually operated in a set of 3 or 4, i think usually for the smaller locos like the J27
You're surely not suggesting that Carlisle station would employ an imposter in the role? That's the real gentleman down from the North Pole for the day - he'd be very hurt to learn that you thought him a fraud.
Thank you tim for all your superb videos they are always so good to watch kind regards kevin 😊
Thank you Kevin - that's good to hear. Every good wish to you for the festive season when it eventually arrives (even if Santa has got his dates mixed up!)
Thank you tim and a early merry Christmas to you as well. Kevin
You captured the "merry" atmosphere of the occasion superbly, Tim - skillfully edited!
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes.
Thank you for all your videos this year, all of which have been excellent.Looking forward to 2025 & hopefully some variety.Cheers Tim.

I always look forward to your videos Tim, they never disappoint.
Thank you Lisa - that's good to hear.
That was marvellous. Merry Christmas tim.
Thank you - and every good wish to you too.
What a day at Carlisle, black 5, RHTT and 4× 66's. Good end to the season.👍👍
Thanks David - I really couldn't have asked for better for the last day. Greetings for the festive season - when it eventually arrives.
@schoolshorts same to u too. Hoping for more steam in 2025.

Very good video and it’s a bit early for Christmas especially when it’s still November and nice to see the black 5 steam train
Thank you Fraser. I did ask Santa whether we could expect the Easter Bunny next week!

Hopefully we'll see her in Carlisle in 2025.
The jazz band is great. Playing summer time at this time of the year.
Ha ha! I wondered if anyone would pick up on that! Best wishes.
Thanks for that video Tim. As you say, 'Till we meet again!
Thank you Michael. Hopefully there'll be more to come.

11:48 just watched one our lads from the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway getting off the black 5 footplate doing the lamps… 🏴🚂
He's obviously found his ideal job! Lucky man.
The Santa suit seemed to fit you quite well?

@schoolshorts 🤣🤣🤣
