  • We visited Bamberg in December when its Christmas Market was already in full swing. We explored the medieval city's Altstadt and Christmas Market on foot. Skip to the end if you're only interested in seeing the Christmas Market... Bamberg left a great first impression and I'd love to experience the UNESCO World Heritage listed Altstad again.

Bamburg was my first duty station back in 73 a lot of good memories from there, nice town and good Bier Bamberger Hofbräu used to go a little gasthaus not far from the base and that's what they had on tap and good schnitzel sandwiches.

Interesting, must have been a great experience. I heard that Bamberg is still "the place to be" if you enjoy a beer!

@@chasingfootprints Well I spent 18 months there and then was transferred to a very small unit of around 40 and we were stationed on a German army base, now there's a story.

My father lived close to the army base in Würzburg, i was a kid and have fond memories of the Soldiers showing me around the base. One, i think a Sergean First Class, brought me in to get some candy bars.
There were also bbqs with some of them, it's been a long time, over 30 years but i have fond memories of them.

..... Enlisted in the US Army, Jan '72 ... After Fort Knox basic and AIT... Was assigned to 2/2 Armored Cavalry Regiment H Company... M60-A1 main battle tanks...
Lived in Bamberg for we'll over 2 1/2 years...
... Loved the town... Wish we had smart phones back then, as I would have discovered much more about Bamberg then ... Visited Munich, Frankfort, Nurnberg, Amsterdam many times...
... My actual mission was border patrol / duty ... Where we would either drive along the border, or stay overnight in an observation shack... I watched East German guards, as they watched me...
... But, now Bamberg has been declared a World Heritage Site... And deservingly too ...!
... I wanted to go home after my three years duty... But now look back at those years, as the most cherished time of my life ..... Regards .....
