  • The fight against the Devourer from update 14 of my Let's Play (hosted on Something Awful and LP Beach) of Bug Fables: the Everlasting Sapling (played on Hard Mode). We demonstrate a method to defeat this infamous boss at the earliest possible opportunity to fight it.
My strategy is adapted from the one used by Kappy in his Rank 0 run here: • Bug Fables Rank 0 Hard...
Including the first attempt (which wastes a turn to get the spy and is therefore unlikely to succeed), the successful run was attempt #6. There's a bit of leeway (you'll notice I didn't get perfect Super Blocks on everything, and didn't need every item I brought) but that's thanks to my being at Rank 8 and willing to use medals (unlike Kappy's more restrictive challenge rules, for which the strategy was developed).
I use Favorite One on Kabbu to help the others output a bit more damage, and Weak Stomach/Poison Defender on him so that (after using the Roasted Berries on turn 2) it neutralises the defence penalty. This isn't strictly necessary (and comes out a wash on a lot of runs), but as you can see in the video, it ended up saving me an action on the final turn, which made that turn less RNG dependent (one character could have been killed and I would still have won).
If I were optimising solely for this fight, I'd put enough levels in MP to equip the following: 3x HP Plus, TP Plus, Favorite One (Kabbu), Weak Stomach (Kabbu), Poison Defender (Kabbu), Super Block+ (anyone), then put the remaining levels into HP. More HP helps minimise the impact of some RNG elements (how the Devourer distributes its damage); though bad RNG is still possible (if it eats someone too early you'll still lose), this should increase the odds of winning.

Dude, this is really impressive! I'm honestly surprised that this video doesn't have more attention.
