"Out of the Blue" - MIKA

- Originally composed as a demo for a piano library, "Out of the Blue" was also orchestrated for the BBC drama series "The Impressionists" years later..
Mike Brayn wrote the beautiful lyrics which accompany the music and we then went looking for a singer who could deliver a classical crossover performance for the song.
Mike contacted singing coach Glynn Jones to ask if he had any students suitable. He sent us Mika, then just 17 years old! As you will hear, he performed the song fantastically!! Mika liked the sound in my studio which led to me recording many of his demos for the first album, "Life in Cartoon Motion".
Oh, that's my eldest daughter Lisa in the photo with Mika. He asked her to be in the Grace Kelly video, but Lisa was too shy :)
Since we recorded the demo, Mike wrote more lyrics for the song which you can read below. We hope you enjoy "Out of the Blue"!

It's crazy to think that if they didn't send you Mika to record the vocals probably he wouldn't have been famous, we owe you so much.
I was a very small part of Mika’s success. I have no doubt he would have been a big star even if we hadn’t met. He was a VERY determined young man!

Good morning! Well, before Mika signed his deal with Universal, I was at a live gig he gave in a small London restaurant. It was the first time I had seen him in front of a live audience and I turned to Mika's father and said "I have no doubt that your son will be a big star!" - guess I was right ;)

Maybe, though I was almost deafened at one of his first concerts in Hammersmith many years ago!! It was LOUD!!!! Damaged hearing is not ideal for my job ;)

Thank you Floriane! I have many demo recordings, but I can't remember if any songs did not make it into final productions. Mika owns all the other recordings we did so I'm afraid I cannot release them to the public :)

Wow. Amazing. Considering he was singing opera at 11 it shouldn't be a shock his voice was so good at 17 but it's still tremendously impressive. And wonderful to know where that adorable photo came from!
You spent a good bit of time around him so I have to be nosy and ask: is he as much fun/entertainment to be around as he seems? I understand you knew him in professional context but he seems like he's a genuinely warm, hilarious presence.
Thanks! As I'm sure you know, Mika is a big kid :) It was always fun having him at my house, but when it was time to work, he was very serious of course. However, for "Lollipop" Mika raided our cutlery drawer and I recorded him banging spoons - very noisy!! You will see he credited "The Spoons Orchestra of Chiswick" (the area I live) in the album notes :)

Hi Alisa. I don't need to tell you how talented Mika is, but I was impressed how someone so young knew exactly the sound he wanted. He chose Greg Wells over some more well known producers because he instinctively felt he would give him the sound he was after.
It was always fun having Mika in our house - my daughters loved listening in on the sessions :) And he has a lovely family, all very determined and talented in their own right. He works very hard and deserves the success he has achieved.

I haven't seen Mika for about 6 years now. I recorded some parts for his second album. Dr John and Rain were two of them. Not sure when our paths will cross again, seeing as he is permanently travelling and working :)

I don't know how many demos Mika recorded before I met him, but we recorded between 30 and 40 songs together before his first album.

+thewatermelon I'm afraid I can't share Mika's demos, though virtually all of them were fully produced for his albums. I am able to share "Out of the Blue" because I hired Mika to sing this song. Mika owns all his own demos so he is the only one who can release them. Sorry :)

There's something I don't understand though: Mika was 17 when the song was recorded but the impressionists came out in 2006? Also he doesn't look 17 in the picture and the recording sounds much greater than what was done in the 2000s? Forgive me if I sound dumb!

Sorry for the confusion :) As I tried to explain in the description, I originally wrote it as a piano demo. I then recorded Mika's vocals but it was several years later when I chose to use the theme in The Impressionists.
It was as a result of Mika liking the sound in my studio that he returned to me to record demos for his first album. Grace Kelly, Relax and many others were recorded by me before he went to the USA to produce them fully with Greg Wells. You will see my name appears on several of his songs as recording engineer. Mika also came back to me to record parts for his second album too. I hope that all makes sense now :)
