I have been fortunate enough to be able to apply for a study abroad program with my college next year, but it's only an 11 day trip and is about $6k USD and honestly I have been kinda worried about that cost and whether it may be too much for an average stay in Japan. It's a trip where we would be with a hired tour guide the entire time and would be going to multiple historic sites. I've been trying to tell myself that since we have a 24/7 guide, hotel rooms w/ private baths, entrance fees, round trip flight, transportation [trains, etc], and some meals all paid for, that this is a reasonable price. Any idea if 6k might be a bit overkill? [it doesn't include shopping estimates].

I would say that it is a bit overkill. I cant help but think that you could have a longer experience in japan if u went solo. But if u are travelling in a group, that could make it more fun since u will have built in friends haha. But if you’re anything like me, shopping will be your biggest expense haha so i think 6k + shopping money is a lot to pay for, just for 11 days. for reference, for my 16 day trip: my flight was around $1500, transpo ended up being like 200 (without leaving tokyo), airbnb apartment all to myself was about $1600, food was like $900, and shopping was like $1500, and about $300 for fun/beauty experiences. I also am the type of traveller who likes to haven a loose schedule when im in a new country, to explore more. So if you’re like me too, i would consider if you would like a 24/7 guide and premade schedule that you would have to adhere too. I hope this helps!!!
