What makes this so helpful for me are the 'chunks'. This really helps. A 'run-on' sentence is difficult for me to remember. But broken down into smaller chunks of the 'literal' translation makes it much much easier. Also, I'm a big Quizlet fan so having it accompany the video (at the MC website) is a real bonus! I'm happy to be a premium member of Mandarin Corner and would recommend it to all I know who are eager to learn Mandarin Chinese!

Yeah, I was introduced to 'chunks' when learning Russian and it accelerated learning greatly. We don't think' in words. We think in phrase chunks.

Even for me as an "78-years old senior-learner", your CHUNKS are very well, helpful and precious. In my autodidactic learning, I have always longed for textbooks with such chunks and the subsequent correct rendering of the sentences, but since 20 years ago, I never found this helpful method. A big compliment for your fantastic VIDEO - it takes me a step further in oral communication!

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video *5% at a time* on *desktop computers and laptops* OR *25% at a time* on *smartphones!*
Access the playback speed controls as follows:
*Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the *lower right* of the video's screen and click on the *settings icon* (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link *"custom".* Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time.
*Smartphones:* open the video and go to the *upper right* of the video's screen. You will see *3 dots.* Click on them and you will see the link to open the *"playback speed"* controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you *greater control* over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

This video is just what I need to to make the most of my learning Chinese. The problem with most people is that they think it is the teachers job to teach them how to do something. I think it is the students job to learn. By doing this exercise in focused attention to reading, listening and speak Mandarin, it will be a great help for the information to start to make sense. Thank you for providing the best material for the students to get a chance to experience more realistic and interesting Mandarin examples. You have prepared a great meal. Let the students feast.

How true. On the various "learning Chinese" Facebook groups I see some people acting like it is someone else's fault they are not learning.
Whether it is a language, a trade, a musical instrument or whatever, you have to WORK. You can certainly search for better methods or techniques, but nothing changes the fact that you will still have to work hard to make any progress.

You are so altruistic offering these lessons for free on RUclips! But I believe you should receive more compensation! Reward your efforts. I should donate. Also, you can add more advertisements to your RUclips videos to get more ad revenue.

    • @MandarinCorner2
      @MandarinCorner2  5 лет назад +2

This channel was set up with Eileen's email which RUclips consider as "Chinese" and China is one of the countries excluded from the RUclips Partnership program so we were prevented from making money from RUclips advertisements. That is one reason we ask for donations. We know there are many RUclipsrs in China generating revenue from RUclips ads. Our guess is that they either used emails created before they came to China or they figured out some other way to get around RUclips Partnership Program's China exclusion. We were unaware of this exclusion when we set up the channel.

It is primarily meant to serve as an educational tool for advanced level beginners, Dereko. Of course, no native speaker speak so slowly - we never meant to give that impression and we believe the majority of advanced level beginners understand this and appreciate the slow delivery to give them a chance to get used to Chinese words and sentences.

You make a good point with this video in that while a growing vocabulary is essential, understanding Chinese word order is vital and best reviewed with simple sentences(not so simple for me).For me once this word order is grasped it's just a matter of using and fitting in new words. Also there are some idiomatic expressions here which for me are best learned and understood by seeing the sentence....for example- "Let me-Wo lai".I think you personally have leaned how to learn though your English studies...chunks are good......your videos are fun.

How wonderful: now you have taught us -- fifty times -- that the word "chunks" is spelled c-h-u-n-k-s.
I guess this is to help us learn the connection between Roman letters and Chinese Putonghua.
(And of course I'm always happy when language courses tel us it's Chinese Putonghua they are using. I would be so-o-o unhappy if they tried to use Italian or Nigerian Putonghua on us, so it's important to keep these distinctions clear.)
Joking aside, though, Elaine, your clear enunciation and useful vocabulary are a great help. Thank you.

Note about chunks, they are usually based on subject predicate construction or topic comment construction...in Chinese, particles are often used to separate chunks. In other words, the slight pauses come after the subject or topic of a sentence, so that you take one breath to say the subject or topic and then you say the predicate or the comment in another breath. Obviously, with short sentences, you can say everything in one breath. I read about this in a book called 汉语口语语法

Sometimes, we use 地方 to refer to "some aspects". For example:
      如果我有什么地方做得不对,请告诉我。
rúguǒ wǒ yǒu shénmedìfang zuò dé bùhǎo, qǐng gàosu wǒ.
If there's anything I've done wrong, please let me know.
In this example, 地方 doesn't mean "place".

Hello Mandarin corner I'm living in Shenzhen

On #11 "你对外国人有什么印象?" the pinyin reads "Nǐ duì wàiguó rén yǒu shéme yìnxiàng?" with "shé me" instead of "shén me" and I just went down a rabbit hole of trying to find a rule about this. Windows doesn't even let you type "shé me" for the 什么 characters. First suggestion is 社么.
Most of the advice on this is that shéme is just how people pronounce it when they are speaking fast, but that it should be shénme. Is this correct?

May I use 多久(30) and 多长时间 (26), in the same manner? I noticed that both of them are translated, as "how long"!

They mean the same thing. It's just one is more concise.

Hi Eileen, I've just finished the small talk item and I'm feeling to be on the track now. So, can you suggest me some steps to follow, I'm a little bit confused, which one to watch next and after, among all your videos! There's really a room for a success here, but only with some guides and advices. Thanks

This video has the same format as small talk. You should try this one.
After that, you can go study "sentence starter", there are total of 200 sentences in this videos with common sentence structure.

Hi! For the 4th sentence, why did you use “Shangban” instead of “gong zuo”?

  • @yangranay8102
    @yangranay8102 5 лет назад +2

At the 18th sentence, I see 有些 地方 translated as "there are some things", which should be "there are some places". It's just a statement.

Hey Eileen! I have a question, is it okay to emphasize the R a little more in the word "son", for example, "erzi", or should I soften my R? I think it might have to do I have been always hearing northern Beijing accents and started to naturally emulate that, but I am not sure if I am overdoing it. I know it's difficult to know without hearing, but is it okay? 5:36
By the way, I can't thank you enough for your hard work, I am just now going to start speaking with a native to practice and I could not have done it without you. As soon as I am able I hope to contribute to your channel. Thanks!

“Le” expresses ongoing action as in no. 50? I thought it expressed completed action or change of state.

Thank you for your amazing Chineses learning video. I suscribe it. Would it be possible for you to make Chinese Character bigger and make english font smaller next time you create one? Because Chinese Charater do not stand out compared to English, making it difficult to read and be familair with.. Other than that, your video is flawless and totally recommendable. xie xie

Cette vidéo procède d'une bonne idée, mais l'introduction est trop longue et surtout il faudrait utiliser des fonds colorés et non pas blanc qui font mal aux yeux. La typographie est à améliorer. Ceci dit cette vidéo est excellente.
