To be told by the very creators of your favorite game of all time that you inspire them to keep up their efforts on daring to remake it...that is insanely touching and surreal.

It's not only that it was the first RPG that you played at the time. I played more RPGs before it, including Zelda A Link to the Past where I emotionally connected to the game and the gameplay a lot (I am a sensitive kind of person), FF 6, but when I played FF 7 it just resonated way deeper. It's greatest feat is one that is almost impossible to do, and thus, the ultimate difficulty and valuable thing to do in direction and production: it connects the characters with you at an emotional level that no game after it or before it could ever do again, ever. The atmosphere, the setting are so well, so absurdly incredibly well done, the graphics, the music, the events, the childishness, your childishness too helped you feel this with less prejudice, at a higher level, that you captured everything on it, but it's not only your childhood, it's not only your first time. It's the characters, the tenderness, the love, the sadness, the mystery and the setting. No direction could ever achieve this ever again at the same level, it's ultimately complex to do, to work so well and be so wise as to produce a game that makes you feel like the FF 7 characters are a part of your family and you reunite with that lost part of your family and you cry, it's natural, it's such an exquisite, such a highly ellaborate, almost an unknown way of directing a game, of developing a story, that, it makes it the best game of all time.
Tell me just one more game in history that developed it's story, characters, setting and even gameplay at the emotional depth level FF 7 did. That's also why it's the best 2020 game again.
Just tell me one game that has a better gameplay + story + music, the music, setting. Just look at the emotional depth the music has.
You can deploy all the story and story development tricks and perks you want in a movie or videogame, but games and movies that made you cry and managed to engage you with the characters are the games and movies that are best made, that required the deepest of all design complexity.
That's why we all cried and love FF 7, and why we think it's the best 2020 game. When you look at yourself inside, and you recognize those instincts that tell you: this is better even though Persona has a lot of other fancy gameplay shit, the story doesn't begin to compare. You look inside and you balance stuff like "this is more adult" against the feelings that Aeris produces in you, that Cloud, Barret, Tifa, the music generate in you and your instincts know: Final Fantasy is better. That's your instincts knowing what I explained before. But evil people are all vocal about Persona, and TLOU, even though all that violence, genre and sexual preference arguments to give you something "adult" a dull argument to say something is superior, boast of, and being more vocal and not being able to explain what I explained before, and it not being a commonly discussed topic or even something people mention when talking about direction and production, makes the dull argument be more widely spread.
That's why people who defend what their instincts inside tell them, which is what I explained above, like Maximilian, are so important to Final Fantasy 7's name and this story direction with more noble principles, instead of resorting to pure and yellow press violence, realistic themes. What is reality, what is the cement jungle out there if not evil and violence, complete lack of values? Japanese direction and FF 7 preserve good values, even if some are idealistic, and offer a more tender setting with good feelings, contrary to the shit full of prejudice we do in the west.
Comparing the values and principles, and the setting in FF 7 and TLOU is like comparing a mass shooting on TV with violins and piano music. Somehow the people who like, love to watch on TV how X cheated on Y while drunk and then used it to appear on TV or who despise tender, white feelings are more vocal, and try to impose their opinion telling us that their stuff is superior but they are wrong.
When I watch the FF 7 intro with Aeris being a flower girl and then the camera panning out to the city (the iron jungle) with all the cool lights and the exuberant display of wealth, and power of it, she is against all that, alone by herself, and she still has hope, when I see that I see a metaphor of all the people who say other games with other more artificial elements are better. Her hope and her feelings against the artificiality. And in the end she has the truth, not them. She is unique, she is alone, but she knows a better truth. Your instincts know that truth too. It's surreal when I watch the intro and it ends up indirectly being a visual metaphor for the real world talk about what's better.

For me, FF7 has an emotional connection because I watched my best friend play 90% of the game, before I myself owned a Playstation or the game on PC. My best friend committed suicide at 18, nearly 20 years ago.
I already loved the characters, the story and the battle/materia systems, so that personal connection made my love all the more profound.
FF7 is truly a story about the bond of friendship and how our daily thoughts and actions contribute to the overall scheme of life. It's about taking the blissful and painful memories of the past and using it as motivation for a better future.
We truly appreciate Remake for the same motivations...our bond with the past and the memories we shared of the game and our own connections to it.
It is a beautifully nostalgic feeling.

There's too much negativity thrown at devs when they screw up. In times like that to know they are seeking out passionate fans of their work for inspiration is heartwarming. You are one of the most genuine dudes on RUclips. Good for you Max. Don't change.
Well if they are screwing up they deserve the negativity. It isn't fair when they get blamed for greedy executive decisions though.
I'm gonna get hell for saying this, but gamers now are maybe the most entitled people imaginable. They have zero concept of what actually goes into making a game and are hyper fixated on negatives. They complain about prices but demand the absolute highest quality experience not realizing that game prices have remained stagnant for almost 30 years while the cost of making games has close to quadrupled. Now any game that is less than an 85 on meta critic is considered "bad", and any game that has a price point above 60 is considered "corporate greed"...it's honestly nuts to watch, and seeing Max actually enjoy games while not fixating on bad aspects is so refreshing after seeing how toxic the gaming sphere has become for devs between toxic gamers and idiot gaming journalists pushing some kind of political agenda.
2 years later and this video is still hard to watch without crying max is literally an icon to me in the video game community

The truth is I stopped gaming for about 13 years. Oneday I seen on my Facebook that ff7 was finally getting a remake. I then went on RUclips and found Max's video about the announcement and started gaming again. Ff7 remake literally brought me back into gaming after years long break.

Same here. I haven’t played video games since somewhere around 2000... when I saw FF7 remake trailer I was literally electrified and had tears in my eyes. Not sure if I’m going to play other games but I won’t hesitate to use money for FF7 remake.
Also, my first FF experience was 4 when I was a child. I used to hear that foreigners (I’m Japanese) are not into games like FF as it’s boring (and I wasn’t into Mortal Combat)... I didn’t know that they made so many fans all over the world in the last 20 years and that’s the most amazing thing.
I've been saving up for months to pre-order this game. So excited!!!!!!!!!! I know I'm going to love it regardless. I'm an occassional gamer, I could probably count the games I've finished on one hand.

I am on your level Max. I'm 36, I have my daughters, my beautiful supportive wife, a stable job, and this was the one game I always hoped i would see before my time was up. I was left alone A LOT as a child with no father and a Mom that worked 3 jobs, so this and FF8 make up a huge part of my childhood memories.6 more months and we at least get a taste of it🤯😁

Same here, dude. Single mom household, alone a lot. These games were my childhood, the characters were my friends. Going back to them is like stepping back into a time machine and I couldn't be happier!

FFVII is the childhood of many people, to bring it back to this day and age 22 years after, you’re going to need devs that care about those who play the game.
I’m living vicariously through Maximilian, I’m 33 and final fantasy 7 changed my life (and gaming life, RPGs are and story driven games are my go to BECAUSE of FF7) and I got mine on Christmas Day of 97. Keep living the dream for us 80s babies Maximilian.

I watch max, I am a fan and agree with your opinion to an extent but brought up the fact that max comparatively is not that well known in the gaming community, yea, he is growing still but he stated his point of view from an outsider. You never said that max was important to you and your gaming experience you said that max was important to the gaming culture in general which I can agree with fighting games but not as a whole. He’s not necessarily saying Max is important to gaming in general cause yea we can agree that he’s not some global phenomenon but if you read the comment he said Max is very important to the culture of gaming which is indeed true. He’s a big voice and representation of millions and millions of final fantasy fans and to have the development team themselves notice him and look to him for motivation speaks extremely high volumes

Max, I’ve seen that reaction video so many times and it always brings a smile to my face. I remember when I saw the 2015 trailer I was in tears at the end of it. FF7 is such an important game to me because of the circumstances in my life back then. I live in Lebanon. Back then, NTSC version games were VERY hard to come by and I had an NTSC psx in a PAL region. I remember reading a review on a magazine saying that FFVII was probably the greatest game ever made with a score of 97. I was gutted because it was extremely hard to get this game here as no one was into RPGs. The VERY next day at school, I overhear a guy saying that his dad had come back from the states and he got this stupid game that he didn’t like..... final fantastic something. I LITERALLY jump this guy and I show him the picture on the magazine..... “IS IT THIS GAME?” I asked. He looked at me with a half assed smile and said yeah.... shit game. “Can I buy it off you?” And he was like depends on much you’re willing to pay. I didn’t care. It almost felt like fate that I overheard this guy talk about a “shit” game so randomly. I was 15 and I gave 80 dollars to the guy knowing full well I was being swindled. That was the best Christmas I can remember and I was ecstatic playing this game for the next few weeks. Honestly, very few games brought that much joy and sadness while playing it. I am so happy you got your moment with the development team. Congratulations. I really hope old and new players get to experience the joy we felt back in 97. On a side note, it’s much easier now to get games. Limited edition it is :)

I consider it among the greatest compositions in the FF soundtrack catalogue as a whole. It has always (in the somewhat melancholy, and resolute notes) reminded me a bit of _Ain't No Sunshine_ by Bill Withers.
Max is always genuine in every video that I've seen of his. I've been following since 2013. Max you're legitimately one of the greatest people on the internet, let alone youtube. It's really wonderful that you've been recognized by and inspire your heroes, Max. You've always deserved the love and praise that all of us give you. You've helped many of us through many really difficult times in our lives by just being the wonderful person you truly are Max. Thank you so much for being a great teacher too, you've reinvigorated my love for fighting games. While I don't know you personally, I consider you a great friend. I couldn't be more happy for you. I love you and the rest of the gang from the bottom of my heart. I will follow you until the end of time, my friend. God bless you Max. Keep fighting and rising to even greater heights.

Dude, I felt that shit man. I can tell you are a genuine, real fan, like me! I have been a FF nerd since the original game on NES (yeah, I'm 35 lol) and got REALLY obsessed after FF3 on the SNES (FF6 as it's now known). So by the time FF7 was being announced and teased in EGM and GamePro magazines, I was beyond hyped.
I loved your story dude, and congrats on your recognition by the staff. That is HUGE man... I can only dream about something like that happening. After all the thousands of hours I have put into FF games, I might not survive something so awesome!
I only wish I had someone like you to share my FF7 hype with. But none of the few friends I have these days are into it even remotely as much as I am. I'll settle for watching your vids instead ;)

@JJC I'm 40, it is like watching the wheel being invented and also seeing spaceships before you die. My first game was pong, and I'm a big gamer now. I get to introduce my kids to this stuff and I can see they have no idea of how big of an achievement these new games are. I can see going back to play old games would be boring for most young people because there's so much better looking stuff. But we can't fall out of love for FF7 because it was really the first game that brought RPG games into the mainstream and the story was just absolutely epic. If you can sludge through the graphics try playing some of the older FF's, noticing easter eggs from previous titles is worth it if nothing else.
